This invention relates to tool holders and, particularly to an improved tool holder for holding chisels and the like while grinding the same.
The tool holder of the present invention is especially adaptable for use with a grinder attachment Iof the type disclosed in the patent application of William Van Triest, Serial No. 366,749, filed November 22, 1940.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide an improved tool holder for holdground, which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and, at the same time, one which is eicient and effective in its use.
It is another object of the invention to provide an improved too1 holder for holding chisels and the like, while the same are being ground, which is easy and convenient to use and securely holds the tool to be sharpened, and one which is safe in its use, thereby eliminating any dangerof injury to the operator or other workmen in the vicinity of the grinding operation.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved tool holder which is adapted to be incorporated with a a grinder attachment of the class described so as to obtain uniform grindperiphery of the grinding wheel 2, as by means of a screw 5 having a handwheel 6. In the accompanying drawings there isV shown, for the purpose of illustration, one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.

For the purpose of illustration, the improved tool holder of my invention is shown incorporated with the type of grinder attachment hereinbefore referred to. Such an attachment is designed to be mounted on the frame or stationary portion of a grinder with the attachment being positioned adjacent the wheel 2 of the grinder and in front thereof. The attachment Vconsists generally of a carriage 3 slidably mounted on the base 4 for movement toward and away from the provided at 1 for fixing the slidable carriage 3 in the base. There. is rotatably mounted on the base an attachment head 8 which is provided with means comprising a pair of grinding supports A and B designed to be positioned opposite the grinding. wheel 2 by rotation of the head 8. The support'B includes a radially extending arm 9 integral with the head 8 and terminating in a transverse hub or journal portion I0 in which the improved tool holder, in accordance with the present invention, is mounted. There is arranged with the head 8 a handle II which preferably extends radially therefrom on the side -of the head away from the arm 9 and toward the operator.l
The improved tool holder of my invention, as shown in Figures v2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, consists of a longitudinally extending hollow cylindrical body member or housing I2 having a stud shaft I3 arranged therewith which is journaled in the transverse hub or journal portion I0 of the arm 9 and supported by the ball bearings I4. The upper or outer end of the body membex` I2 has a substantially U-shaped groove vI5 arranged therein for receiving the chisel or other tool to be ground. There is arranged in the groove I5, preferably a transversely extending hardened steel insert member lvhaving a U- shaped serrated edge I'I which is adapted to act as a stationary jaw. The insert member I6 is held in position in the body member I2 preferably by means of a pin I8.
In the Upper or outer end of the body member I2 forwardly of the insert member I6 there is reciprocably arranged a head I9 which is adapted to act as a movable jaw having a transversely extending hole 20 arranged therethrough in which the chisel or tool to be ground is adapted to lie. In the upper side of the head I9 centrally thereof and the hole 20 therethrough, there is mounted, preferably, a hardened steel insert member 2| having a knife edge 22 which is adapted to engage withthe shank of the chisel, preferably at two points, as shown in Figure 3. The insert member 2| is held in the head I9 preferably by means of a pair of pins 23. e 1
There Ts positioned within the body member or' housng I2 preferably a tension coil spring 24 having one end thereof preferably screwed onto. the inner end of head I9 at 24a and the other end screwed onto the outer side of a threaded nut 25 at 24h, which, in turn, is screwed onto a cap screw 26 arranged through the lower or inner 'Ihere is pivotally mounted on a pin 21 arranged v between a pair of outwardly extending lugs 21a, carried on the side of .the body member I2, a lever-like handle member 23. There is integrally arranged with the handle member 23, an armlike portion 23 which extends through an openg ing 30 in the side of the body member I2 and preferably has an enlarged head portion3| which ts into a slot arranged in the head I9 just above the inner end of the spring 24.
On the outer end of thestud shaft I3 beyond the journal portion III of the arm 9 there is arranged a nut 32 and an angular-shaped chisel guide or support 33 which is adapted to support the outer end of the chisel or tool to be ground. The chisel guide 33 preferably has a slot or groove 34 arranged in the top surface thereof in which the tool or chisel is adapted to lie. A inut 35 preferably is -provided on the extreme end of the stud I3 for holding the chisel guide 33 securely in position thereon for rotatable movement therewith.
rI'he chisel or tool C to be ground is positionedy in the tool holder in the following manner. The housing or body member I-2 is gripped and the lever-like handle 23 forced inwardly toward the housing about its pivotal connection with the pin 21. Such movement of the handle 28 forces the head I9 outwardly from the end of the body member due to the action of the arm-like portion 23 and the enlarged head portion 3| carried When the chisel has' been properly positionedv in the tool holder, the lever-like handle 28 is released and the head I9 is moved inwardly into the body member due to the action of the spring 24. The chisel is then securely positioned in the tool holder and ready to be ground. It will be seen that the front end of the chisel is supported by the chisel guide orv support 33 and that the rear end of the chisel is supported and gripped by the serrated edge I1 of the insert member I6. To one side of the insert member I1, and on the opposite side thereof betweenthe chisel guide 33 and the insert member I6, the chisel is gripped by the knife edge 22 of the insert member 2| carried by the head or movable jaw I9. It will be understood that the head I9, together with the insert member 2| carried thereby, is held in clamping `position solely by the tension coil .spring 24. The degree of tension of the coil spring 24 may be adjusted by'means of the cap screw 26.
The body member or housing I2 is also adapted to act as a handle which is moved about its pivotal connection in the journal portion I of the arm 9 so that the chisel is moved to grinding position-in front of the wheel as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
As the grinding attachment is oscillated by means of the handle I I carried thereby, the tool .holder is rocked up and down on the stud'shaft I3, thus grinding the back of the chisel on the face of the grinding wheel.
For the purpose of limiting th'e grinding movement, a stop 36 is provided on thecarriage 3 adapted to be engagedby a. coacting stop 31 of the rhead', preventing rotating movement of the chisel on the wheel 3 rearwardly along the heel portion beyond a desired point thereof.
While I have shown and described onel specific embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope' extending substantially perpendicular to ,sald' shaft and having a clamping member arranged therein which is adapted to clamp securely the tool, resilient means arranged within said body member for moving automatically said clamping member toits clamped position, means for moving said clamping member against the action of said last mentioned means to its unclamped position, and means arranged on said shaft for supporting the outer end of the tool. said body member y adapted to act as a handle portion whereby the shaft together with the inner tool supporting and clamping means and the outer tool supporting means carried thereby and the tool to be sharpened may be oscillated relative to said supporting member and the grinding wheel while the tool is being sharpened. y

A device for holding a chisel or a similar tool While sharpening the same by means of a grinding wheeL'as dened in claimA 1, wherein the clamping member includes a jaw-like portion which is adapted t6 cooperate with a similar jaw-like portion carried by the body member whereby the tool to be sharpened is securely'clamped therebetween.
3. A device for holding a chisel or a similar tool while sharpening the same by means of a grinding wheel comprising a supporting member, a stud shaft mounted on said supporting member for rotatable movement relative thereto, a tool 'supporting and clamping means arranged on said shaft for supporting the inner end of the tool to be sharpened, said clamping means consisting 'of a longitudinally extending hollow body member extending outwardly from said shaft, -said clamping member having a movable jaw-like portion carried therebyv which is adapted to cooperate l with a similar jaw-like portion carried by said body member to securely clamp the tool to be sharpened therebetween, resilient means for moving automatically said movable clamping portion to and maintaining the same in its clamped position, means for moving said movable clamping portion to its unclamped position against the action of said last mentioned means whereby the tool may be inserted or removed from between said Jaw-like portions, and means arranged Ion said shaft for supporting the outerfend of the tool, said body member adapted to act as a handle portion whereby the shaft together with the clamping means and the outer tool supporting means carried thereby and the tool to be sharpened may be oscillated relative to said supporting member and the grinding wheel While the tool ls being sharpened.
4. A device for holding a chisel or a similar tool while sharpening the same by means of a grinding wheel comprising a supporting member, a stud shaft mounted on said supporting member for rotatable movement relative thereto, a tool supporting and clamping means arranged on said shaft for supporting the inner end of the tool to be sharpened, said clamping means consisting of a longitudinally extending hollow body clamped position, and means fory moving said clamping `member against the action of said spring whereby the tool maybe positioned in or removed from the hole therethrough, and means arranged on said shaft for supporting the outer end of the tool, said body member adapted to act as a handle portion whereby the shaft together with the clamping means and the outer tool supporting means carried thereby and the tool to be sharpened may be oscillated relative to said supporting member and the grinding wheel while the tool is being sharpened.

A device for holding a chisel or a similar tool while sharpening the same by means of a grinding wheel comprising a supporting member, a stud shaft mounted on said supporting member for rotatable movement relative thereto, a tool supporting and clamping means arranged on said shaft for supporting the inner end of the tool to be'sharpened, said clamping means consisting of a longitudinally extending hollow body member arranged substantially perpendicular to said shaft, a clamping member reciprocably arranged in and extending outwardly from one end of -said body member, said clamping member having a hole arranged therethrough with the axis thereof disposed substantially parallel to said shaft and through which the tool is adapted to be inserted, a tension coil spring arranged within said body member having one end thereof connected to the inner end of said clamping member whereby the same is tended to be moved thereinto, said clamping member throughthe action of said spring adapted tov maintain the tool against the end of the body member when the tool is positioned in the hole through said clamping member, means arranged on the opposite end of said body member for adjusting the tension of said coil spring, a lever-like handle member pivotally attached to said body member having a portion thereof extending thereinto into engagement with said clamping member, said lever-like member adapted to move said clamping member against the action of said coil spring whereby the tool may be positioned in or removed from the hole therethrough, and means arranged on said shaft for supporting the outer end of the tool, said body member adapted to act as a handle portion whereby the shaft together with the clamping means and the outer tool supporting means carried thereby and the tool to be sharpened may be oscillated relative to said supporting member and the grinding wheel while the tool is being sharpened.
