J. D. KELLY.
Construction of Posts and Columns. N0 232,274. Patented Sept. 14,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAM I}SI). I'LE'IILY, OF II'ITSISIIRG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONSTRUCTION OF POSTS AND COLUMNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letter! Patent No. 232,274, dated September 14, 1880.
Application fllcd April 2li, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Ile it known that I,.IAM11S I). KELLY, of Iittsburg, in thc county of Allegheny und State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and uscl'nl Imprm'eiuents in the Construction ot' Posts and Columns; and I do hereby declare the t'ollowing to be a i'nll, clear, and exact description ol' the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in winch- Figure 1 is a perspective ot' the upper part ot a newcl-post constructed after my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot the lower part ot" the same. Fig. 3 represents a complete newel-post when finished on my plan. Figs. l and 5 are modifications in the t'orm of the metal spiders. Figs. (land 7 show dl'l'er ent f'orms ofthe strips.
'lhis invention relates to the construction otposts, pillars, columns, &c., and is designed as an improvement on Letters Patent No. 172,126, granted to me on January 11, 1876.
In said patent I used a prismatic shell with dovetail grooves longitudinally at the corners; but the prepa-ration ot' patterns for the varioussized shells was expensive and the casting diliicnlt und somewhat costly.
My present improvement consists in using, instead of the shell, metallic rings at the ends of the section, each ring being in outline shaped according to the exterior to be presented by the post, and having at its corners, or at intervals in its edges, dovetail notches; further, in combining with such rings correspondingly-tongned strips having beads or flan ges and panels inserted between the beads and the notched rings, and securing all together by a rod or gas-pipe and draw-nut., as before.
More particularly, my said improvement is as follows, reference being had to theannexed drawings:
A designates a ring or spider, of iron, having` the central aperture, l), and eight. equal sides,or any other desired number, at each corner ot' which is a dcvetail notch, c, as shown.
In constructing a neweI-post, for example, the upper section ot' manet-work is generally pyramidai in form. For this work Ieonstruct two spiders, A or I3, the lower being larger (No model.)
than the npperone. Laying the larger one on any suitable flat. surface, l build as l'ollows: I I..2\'c a number ofstrips, rl, oi' wond or other material, each having thc undercut. tongue c and thcoverhanging beads or llangcsf. 'lhe cxtcriorol' the strip is molded according to f'ancy. l first lay in position thc panels y, which lnay be plain or ornamental, and then insert the strips d, so that the tongues c will enter the notches in the lower spider and the, flanges f will overlap the panels. After all are inserted I scton the upper spider, so that the panels r/ will be outside it, the strips d, with their tongues in the notchcsand their llangesf overlapping the panels. A cap, C, is then laid on, preferably with an overhangingr lip, as shown, and a socket or recess f'or the nut n.. A corresponding molding-picco, 1.), is then placed under the section already constructed. I next build up a square section, as follows: To the under sident' piece I), I attach the notched spider Il, alul attach a spider` F, to a base-board, (l. Then, proceeding with the strips and panels as bef'ore, the pedestal or lower section ot' a newel-post is built up. The sides being in this ease parallel, I prevent the movement or disphxcement ot' the spiders by nailing or screwing them to the parts I) and G, respectively. Ihe whole is d rawn together and held by a piece ot' gaspipe or a rod, l1, passing down through the post, and secured by nuts u at top and bottom, as shown.
AS in my previous p:1tcnt,tl|e exact. shape ofthe post is not a part ot' the invention, it being alike applicable to all sorts ot` posts, pillars, columns, pedestals, &c.,whethcr square, round, octagonal. or othershape. All that is required is to make the spiders at' the desired shape. Having these, I can make the sections of strips and panels of' any length with but one set of' castings.
Instead` ofthe ordinary wood strips (I, I can constructsheet-n|etal strips 1, as shown in 1."ig. (i, or I can make round tongues, as in liig. 7, instead ol'the square dovetails previously described.
I claim as my invention- 1. ln the construction ot' posts and columns,
the combinatitm ol' spiders A, having` periphnml notchcs c, with Ilm lung-anni strips Il, hm'- l I?, nml hmuhnl und lungnwl ntrpndnnd puning hcrnh; m' llnngcnf, und the panels y, l-n|h l-ls y, nnlmtnnlinlly nn nut. mlh.
