Patented June 22, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present' invention relates to new and 'useful improvements in beds and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a novel construction and arrangement whereby the head portion of the spring and a mattress thereon may be conveniently raised by power to vsubstantially any desired inclination,
Another very important object of the invention is to provide, in a bed of the aforementioned character embodying electric motor operated raising and lowering means, novel means for automatically stopping the motor when the head portion of the spring reaches either its uppermost or lowermost position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a bed of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in operation, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed constructed in accordance with the present invention.
`Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical lone gitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in cross section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section through a side portion of the bed, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail view in vertical section BED Orrin `T. Foxand Maurice B. Dillon,

through one of the rollers and adjacent parts,
taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through a portion of one of the tracks, showing one of the rollers operable therein and the motor stop switches.
Figure 7 is a detail view of the hand crank which may be used in the event of motor failure.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a head and foot I and 2, respectively, of suitable construction. Extending longitudinally between the head and foot I and 2 are side rails 3.
Mounted on the side rails 3 of the bed is a spring unit which is designated generally by the reference numeral 4. The spring unit 4 includes a base frame 5 which rests on the rails 3 and which has mounted thereon suitable coil springs 6. The spring unit 4 further includes an upper frame 'I which encircles the upper portions of the coil springs B in the usual manner. The frames 5 and I are provided with hinged head portions 8 and 9, respectively. It will thus be seen that the head portion of the spring unit 4 is adapted to be raised to an inclined position.
Suspended by hangers I from the rails 3 is a frame structure which is designated generally by the reference numeral II, said frame structure having mounted thereon a housing I2 of suitable material. Mounted in the forward portion of the housing I2, adjacent the sides thereof,.is a pair of channel members constituting tracks I3. The purpose of the tracks I3 will be presently set forth. Mounted in the rear portion of the housing I2 is a suitable electric motor.` I4. A transverse shaft I is connected to the motor shaft I6 by a suitable flexible joint I l, said shaft I5 being journaled in bearings I8. A worm I 9 is fixed on the shaft I5.
Journaled in bearings I9' in the housing I2 is a longitudinal screw shaft 20. Fixed on the rear end portion of the screw shaft is a worm gear 2| which is driven by the worm I9.
Mounted transversely in the housing I2 for forward and rearward movement is a tubular rod 22. Fixed in the end portions of the tubular rod 22 and projecting therefrom are spindles 23 (see Figure 5). Journaled on the spindles 23 are rollers 24 which are adapted to travel in the tracks I3. A tubular yoke 26 has its ends fixed to the rod 22 adjacent the ends of the latter. As best seen in Figure 2 of the drawings, the screw shaft 2G passes through the intermediate or bight portion of the yoke 26. Fixed on this portion of the yoke 26 is a nut 2l which is threaded on the screw shaft 2G. Thus, the yoke 26 and the tubular rod 22 are operatively connected to the screw shaft 20 for actuation there by. Tubular arms 28 are provided with bearings 25 on one end which are journaled on the spindles 23 between the rollers 24 and the ends of the tubular rod 22. In this manner the arms 28 are connected to the tubular rod 22 for actuation thereby. Mounted in the forward or free endv In Figure 7 of the drawings a hand crank 32 is Y shown for manually rotating the shaft I5 should the electric motor I4 fail. It will be noted that the crank 32 is long enough to be operatively connected to one end of the shaft I5 from one side of the bed. The housing I2 may be provided y with an opening in one of its side walls to accommodate the crank 32.
It is thought that the operation of the bed will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. 'I'he electric motorV I4 Y is reversible. When the motor I4 is operating in one direction the screw shaft 2G is turned for feeding the nut 21, the yoke 26 and thel rod 22 forwardly in the housing I2. Thus, the arms 28 areprnoved forwardly and the head portion of the spring unit 4 is swung upwardly to an inclined position. Of course, a suitable mattress is placed on the spring unit 4. When the electricmotor` I4 is reversed the bed is lowered. The construction and arrangement is such that the bed will remain in any desired adjusted position. When either of the switches 3l is engaged and opened by the adjacent roller 24, the electric circuit to the motor is opened and said motor is automatically stopped. This roller may be disengaged from the safety switches 3| for permitting same to vclose again by connecting the hand crank 32 to the shaft I5 and manually operating the mechanism.
bed constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of said bed is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination'and arrangement of parts may Y be resorted to which will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: A bed including a pair of side rails, a spring unit mounted on said side rails and comprising a hinged head section, a housing suspended from the side rails, tracks mounted longitudinally in the housing, a tubular rod mounted transversely in the housing and movable longitudinally therein, spindles xed in the end portions of said tubular rod and projecting therefrom, rollers journaled on said spindles and operable ony the tracks, arms having one end pivotallyY MAURICE B. DILLON.
