This invention relates to bed attachments espe--. cially for use in connection with exposing bed clothes to freshening by air after use.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide an attachment which can be readily secured to the foot of a bed, and which is pro: vided with collapsible rod supporting means, and pedal means for opening or collapsing the said attachment.
Another object of my invention is to provide pedal, locking means which can be operated from the right or left side of a bed.
Another object of my invention is to provide treadle trip means on either side or both sides, of a bed, the said trip means being connected so as to operate in unison.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, my attachment is generally comprised of two clamp portions l5 provided with clamping recesses I6 adapted to receive the legs |3 of thefoot of a bed, generally designated Ill. The clamp portions are firmly secured by virtue of wing screws I-l. The mattressot thebed is generally designated H and the-covering sheet l2. Theremay-beone or-more" of these sheets depnding on how the bed is made up.
The object of my invention is primarily for airing these sheets and bed clothes l2 after the bed has been slept in, so as to freshen the bed clothes and maintain them in as clean a condition as possible for sleeping the ensuing night.
The clamping portions l5 are provided with extensions I8 which terminate in bearing portions adapted to support the collapsible means used in connection with my invention. The extensions l8 are preferably ofi-set as indicated, and each carries a treadle member 28 having a treadle arm 29 in one integral piece, which is pivoted at the stud generally designated 30. and shown in detail in Figure 5; it being comprised of a. round head 24, and a. shoulder portion 25 and a reduced threaded portion 26. engaged by the nut 21. The shoulder portion 25 is of a dimension a few thousandths of an inch larger than the combined thicknesses of the elements 29, 3|, and extension I8.
The collapsible means is comprised of a treadle member 2,9, the short arms 3| and the long arms, 32,, and as can be seen when the treadle 28 is inv the position indicated in the full lines of Figure 2, the collapsible means will be expanded to its. f ull height whereas when the treadle 28, is allowed to drop in the position indicated in dotted lines, the collapsible means will compactly form itself into the structure. indicated in dotted linesin Fig ure 2.
At the intersection point of the arm 32 and 3|. forming the composite lazy-tongs structure of the collapsible means, the hanging or support rods 20 aresecured by virtue of shoulder screws 2| as shown in detail in Figure 4, the said shoulder screws having a shoulder body 22 and a re-. duced threaded body 23 The rods 20 being threaded suitably to receive the threaded shank portions 23, of the screws 2|. The shoulder portion 22 is preferably longer in dimension than the combined thicknesses of the hub portion of the elements 32 in order to provide a working fit and eliminate friction. The arms 32 and 3| are also swivellably connected by rivet elements eration.
When it is desired to air the clothes of the bed, the device is set up in the expanded position indicated, and the sheets l2 are placed over the various rungs 20 indicated. The treadle is held 33 thus permitting extensible and retractable opnormallyin the; upwardposition indicated by-thedotted lines in Figure 2; whence the device is in collapsed form and it takes upas little space aspossible. When it is to be expanded and set for operation, it is held in engagement by the trip means comprised of the elemental structure indicatedmore clearly in Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Referring to these figures, the bracket portions l8 are interconnected by a webbed portion [9 having an extension 52 provided with a hub 34 for supporting some of the mechanism later to be described. The extensions H! are provided with bearing portions 49 so as to secure thereto the pivots 48 upon which the trip means is mounted at either side of said extensions. On each side of the extensions IS a lug 46 is provided in order 1 to receive in abutting relationship the heel 41 of the trip means 45 which are formed approximately in the shape indicated and which operate in unison in the direction indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 6. o
rods and 35 which are secured at points 40 and 4| of the link means 42, and are connected at points 43 and 44 on the trip means 45. The oscillating means 42 is pivotally mounted by virtue of shoulder stud means 38 securely fastened by nut 39. The trip means is normally urged in locked position by the spring means 49 secured to the extension means l8 by virtue of screws 50. Thus, it can be seen that when one of the trip means is urged inwardly by the connection afforded thru the oscillating link means 42 the trip means on the opposing side will be caused to operate inwardly and thus disengage .the treadle means 28. The trip means 45 is provided with a ribbed structure 5| in. order to permit the treadle 28 shown in dotted lines Figure 6 when moved downwardly to provide a cam action to the trip means thus forcing the trip means inwardly and engaging the said treadle means in locking engagement after the treadle has been brought down to the floor surface I4.
I It should be noted that my invention is secured to the legs l3 of a bed preferably in a position where the treadle when in locked engagement is a slight distance from the floor Surface l4 in order to permit'disengagement and engagement, readily, of the treadle means with the said trip means. When the device is in normal position, that is in its collapsed form, and it is desired to extend it for use in supplying the spaced rack portions 20 as shown in full lines in Figure 2, the foot of a person is used in engaging the treadle as shown in the dotted lines Figure 6, and the tip of the toe is slid along and presses the treadle downward which causes the trip means 45 to be swung to the dotted position and then by virtue of action of the springs 49, the trip means is brought back'to its normal position so thatwhen the treadle is released it will abut and engage th'e trip means which by virtue of its heel means 41 will prevent the treadle from going back ton'ormal position. When it is desired to disengage the treadle means'soas to set the rack in'normal position when no longer in use,the toe of the. foot of a person is slid along th e ribbed portion 5| thus causing thetrip means to work inwardly to the dotted position thus providing an escapement for the treadle 28" in its bottorn position,. and by gradually lifting the foot, the treadle is brought up past the locking portion of the, trip means 45 and allowed to rest in the up or normal position. j
The attachment may be quite weighty if made of metal, hence rods 20 may be made of hollow tubing with threaded plugged ends. Even if tubes be used it is believed that in collapsing the rack means it would be advisible to allow the foot to deter the action of gravity thus minimizing possible damage from continued use.
I believe, I have described rather succinctly the nature and operation of my invention, and I reserve the right to any and all modifications to which'it is susceptible in accordance with the scope and spirit thereof, as well as within the purview of the accompanying drawings and the foregoing description; my invention to be "limited by the appended claims.
Having thus described and revealed my invention what I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: The trip means 45 are connected by virtue of an oscillating link means 42 and the connecting 3 1. In a device of the character described, in combination with rack means, and dual treadle means, dual trip means adapted to operate. in unison pivotably mounted in a manner to effectuate simultaneous operation of both trip means by-virtue of motivation of either of said dual trip means, the said dual treadle means adapted to be engaged by the said dual trip means simultaneouslymaintaining the said rack means in extended position.

In a device of the character described-in combination with lack means, and dual treadle means, dual. trip means mounted pivotably on support means, oscillating link means mounted on said support means intermediately disposed between said dual trip means, and connecting rod means swivellably connected at one of their ends to the ends, respectively, of said oscillating link means, their other ends swivellably connected to each of said dual trip means, and spring'means normally urging said'trip means outwardly, the said dual treadle means'adapted to beengaged by the said dual trip means simultaneously maintaining the said rack means in extended position. A device of the character described comprising, U shaped brackctsupport means-pro vided with clamp means adaptedgto secure the said bracket support means to 'a bed, extensible and collapsible rack means comprising, a set of lazy-tongs mounted on eachof the arms of the aid U shaped bracket support means, and rodmeans interconnecting the said lazy-tongs structure, treadle means pivotally mounted on each of the arms of the said U shaped bracket support means and connected to the said lazy-' tongs structure adapted to efiect extension and retraction of the said lazy-tongs structure, and trip'means mounted articulately on each'o'f the arms of the said U shaped bracket support means adapted to maintain the said rack means in extended position. l I
