When pressure is applied to rod M by the brake pedal, it will be transferred by the equalizing bar to the piston rods and pistons to thus cause the pistons to be moved with equal force. If one of the fluid pressure systems served by one of the master cylinders should develop a leak so that it is no longer effective, the other master cylinder can continue to be operated with very little lost mo tion. For example, if line 6 should break, this will result in the equalizing bar having a clockwise rotation until the rear side of the end 25 thereof engages the housing; When this occurs, there will be a solid connection between rod [4 and piston rod 23 and then all the force applied by the pedal will b applied to piston 5 to develop pressure. Thus it is seen that the nnly lost pedal travel, when one master cylinder is inoperative,
is that determined by the distance betweenthe rear edge of end 25 and the housing which is quite small but, nevertheless, suificient to allowfor the equalizing bar to have sufficient pivotal movement to perform its equalizing action when both pistons are developing fluid pressure.
In Figure 2 there is shown a slightly modified structure. The housing I0 is provided with a cross-bore 33 which extends completely across the housing. The sleeves I8 and I9 only extend into their bores I 2' and I I as far as the juncture thereof with the cross-bor -33. bar 22' which is positioned within the bore 33 is provided with a spherical central portion 34 and also with spherical end portions and 36. The extension l5 to'which the rod I4 is connected, carriesv a threaded plug 3! which has an end portion extending into cross-bore 33, which end portion is provided with a concave surface 38 upon which bears th spherical central portion 34 of the equalizing bars. Also, the rear ends of piston rods 26' and 28 are provided, respectively, with concave end surfaces 39 and for engagement with spherical ends 35 and 36 of the equalizing bar. In order that bore 33 may be sealed after the equalizing baris placed therein and thus provide a chamber to hold a supply vof lubricant, the ends of said bore are closed by discs 4| and 42,
Theoperation of this modification is the same asthe structure shown inFigure 1. However, by employing plug 31 with the concave bearing surface 38, there is provided a greater bearing surface through which force may be transmitted. Since the plug is adjustable, any wear can be taken up. Also, by having the ends of equalizing bars 35 and 36 spherically shaped and the cooperating end surfaces of the piston rods provided with concave surfaces, a greater bearing surface is present between the equalizing bar and Being aware of the possibility of modifications in the particular structure herein described Without departing from the fundamental pricniples of my invention, I do not intend that its scope be limited except as set forth by the appended claims.

2. In actuating apparatus of the class described for moving two members simultaneously with equal forces, a housing member having-a chamber, an equalizing bar mounted for limited pivotal movement in the chamber of said housing member, parallel piston rods one of which has an end extending into said chamber for engagement by one end of said equalizing bar and the other of which has an end extending intosaid chamber for engagement by the other end of the equalizing bar, the other ends of said piston rods being adapted for engagement with the two members to be moved, means for so closing said chamber as to permit lubricant to be retained therein, and means connected to the housing for moving said housing so as to transmit equal forces to the rods by means of said equalizing bar.

In actuating apparatus of the class described for moving two members simultaneously with equal forces, a housing member provided with a chamber, =an equalizing bar mounted in said chamber for limited pivotal movement, parallel guide sleeves each having one of its ends carried by said housing member and openin into the chamber adjacent an end of the equalizing bar, a rod slidably mounted in each sleeve, one of said rods having one end engaged by one end of the bar and its other end engaging one of the two members to be moved'and the other; rod having one end engaged by the other end of the bar and its other end engaging the other of the two members to be moved, and an actuating member connected to apply a moving force to the housing member on the side opposite the rods and sleeves.
4. In actuating apparatus of the class described for moving two members simultaneously with equal'forces, a housing member provided with a bore open at both ends, an equalizing bar mounted in said bore for limited pivotal movement, parallel guide sleeves positioned at right angles to the'axis of the bore and each having one of its ends carried by said housing member, and opening into the .bore adjacent an end of the equalizing bar, a rod slidably mounted in each sleeve, one of said rods havingone end engaged by one end of the bar and its other end engaging one of the two members to be moved and the other rod having one end engaged by the other end of the bar and its other end engaging the other of the two members to be moved, means for closing the ends of the bore to thereby enclose the equalizing bar and establish a lubricant chamber, and an actuating member connected to apply a moving pressure producing devices each coniprising a movable piston, a housing member having a chamber, an equilizing bar mounted for limited pivotal movement in the chamber member,

In actuating apparatus of the class described for moving two members simultaneously with equal forces, a housing member provided with a cros-bore open at both ends and two parallel 'bores entering the cross-bore at right angles to its axis end at opposite ends thereof, an equalizing bar mounted in said borefor limited pivotal movement, two guide sleeves each having one of its ends extending into one of said parallelbores scribed for moving two members simultaneously with equal forces, a member provided with a bore, an equalizing bar positioned in the bore and having acentral portion' provided with an annular curved surface adapted for abutment with a surface carried on the'housing and permitting limited pivotal movement relative to the housing, two rods each having one endextending into an end of the bore at right angles to its axis for engagement by an end of the bar, the other I end of the rod having engagement with the pmembers to be moved, guide means foreach rod ,carried by thehousing, andmeansflfor moving 'the housing and by, meansgofdth bar applying "equal forces through the rods ate the two memi bers.. i

In actuating apparatus for twin masteroylinders having parallel cylinders and pistons reciprocable therein, a housing member, provided with a bore open at both ends, an equalizing bar mounted in said bore for limited pivotal movement, parallel guide sleeves positioned at right angles to the axis of the bore and each having one of its ends secured tosaid housing member and opening into the bore adjacent an end of the equalizing bar, a piston rod slidably mounted in each sleeve, one of, said rods having one end engaged by one endof the bar and the other end abutting one of the two pistons and the other rod having one .end engaged by the one end of the bar and its other end abutting the other piston, means for closingthe ends of the bore to thereby enclose the equalizing bar and establish a lubricant chamber, a dust excluding boot surrounding the sleeves and rods and having one end attached for movement with the, housing and its other end attached to, the end of the cylinders, and an actuating rod connected to the housingmember on'theside opposite the rods and sleeves.
9. A movable connecting meansfo r interposition as an assembled unit between an actuating memberand two members to be actuated, said connecting means, comprising a housing member provided with a chamber, an equalizing bar mounted in the chamber for limited pivotal movement, parallel guide sleeves carried .by the housing and extending from one side thereof, a rod in each guide sleeve, one end of each rod extending into the chamber for engagement with an end of the equalizing bar and having its :other end adapted for connection with one of n the two members to be actuated, and a rod'secured to the housing on the side opposite the sleeve and adapted for connection with the actuend of the bar, and means, for moving the a ating member. q
