ing a reciprocating work handling member although it will be understood that certain aspects of the invention are readily adaptable to other hydraulically operated machines.
It is an object of the invention to provide a power transmission system of the character described wherein a unitary control panel is utilized for controlling the flow of fluid to the various motors in proper sequence.
A further object is to provide in a machine of this character an improved work fixture operating mechanism comprising more particularly a fixed piston and a movable cylinder carrying a work xture together with means for directing fluid through internal passages in the fixed piston to cause the fixture to be alternatively brought into operative relation with one or the other of the two broaching rams.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred form of the present invention is clearly shown.
In the drawing, the single figure is a diagrammatic view of a power transmission system incorporating a preferred form of the present invention.
The present application is a division of applicants copending application Serial No. 191,903, filed February 23, 1938, which has matured into Patent No. 2,298,831, of October 13, 1942, and contains subject matter divided therefrom and pertaining more particularly to the xture cylinder construction and the means for operating the same. In the present drawing there is illustrated only so much of the transmission system as pertains to this structure, certain details of the complete circuit being omitted for sake of clarity. They are more fully shown and described in the parent application to which reference may be made for a more thorough understanding.
Referring now to the drawing, there is provided a pair of reciprocating fluid motors comprising the iixed pistons I and I2 carrying the moving cylinders I4 and IG. The cylinders carry broaching tools, one of which is indicated at I8 and which may be so constructed as to breach a fiat or shaped surface. Suitable work handling means is provided comprising a reciprocating cylinder 20 slidably mounted on a xed piston 22. The cylinder 20 carries work holding means indicated at 24 and 26 and is adapted to be moved to the right or left. to position the work holding means 24 or the work holding means 26 in alignment with the broaching cylinders I6 and I4, respectively. The detailed construction of the broaching machine itself apart from the hydraulic mechanism forms no part of the present invention and is not illustrated, there being many examples of dual ram broaching machines well known in the art and which are suitable applications for the present invention.
For the purpose of supplying fluid to the various cylinders, a pair of rotary fluid pumps 28 and $2 are provided which draw uid from a reservoir 32 through conduits 30 and 94, respectively. The pumps have delivery conduits 34 and 96 which lead to ports 36 and 98 of a control panel 31. The latter is a unitary block containing several valves for automaticaly controlling the delivery of fluid to the various cylinders in a manner more fuly described in the copending application above referred to.
For the present application it is suilicient to note that the panel 31 has three pairs of ports 5I-52, 80-82 and IIB-|20 which connect by conduits 54-56, 16--18 and I22-I24 with the various cylinders. It will be noted that these conduits connect to the cylinders through passages formed in their respective piston rods which, being stationary, eliminate the necessity for flexible side connections to direct fluid to the movable cylinders. The panel 3l has a tank connection 'I2 which connects with the reservoir 32 by a pipe 14.
Starting with the parts in the position shown, the automatic control system first causes fluid to be delivered from pump 28 through conduit 34, port 36, panel 3l, port |20 and conduit |24 to the left end of cylinder 20. The cylinder accordingly moves to the left carrying xtures 24 and 26 to a position where the later is in line with the broaching tool I8 and the former is in a position suitable for removing the finished work and placing on a new piece.
As soon as this movement of cylinder 20 has nished, it will be seen that through the internal mechanism of the panel 31 and its automatic control system, not shown, fluid from the pump 28 may be directed through conduit 34, port 36, port 52 and conduit 5S to the lower end of the cylinder Il. 'I'his cylinder is accordingly caused to move downwardly discharging fluid from the upper end of the cylinder through conduit 18, port 82 and through the internal connections of the panel 31 to port 80 from which it flows through conduit 16 to the upper end of cylinder l2. This cylinder is accordingly caused 'to move upwardly in unison with the downward movement of cylinder I4 and discharges oil from the bottom of the cylinder I2 through conduit 5l,

What is claimed is as follows:
A duplex broaching machine comprising a pair of alternately operative and oppositely moving branching rams, a fixture slide selectively movable transversely to operative relation with a selected ram, a cylinder secured to said slide, and a fixed piston and piston rod relative to which said cylinder is slidable, said piston rod having seperated passages in its two ends each connected to admit oil under pressure to one end of said cylinder and at one side of said xed piston.
