This invention relates to improvements in slittens for strip metal, and has as its principal objects to provide a novel and improved design of slitter of a simplified construction and so arranged that the slitter knives may readily be removed from their supporting arbors in an endwise direction.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide a new and improved form of slitter including a novel form of bearing support for an end of each arbor carrying the slitter knives, which is so arranged that the bearing support and bearing carried thereby may be removed from the end of an arbor in an endwise direction and swung away from openings in the housing for the bearing supports, so the slitter knives may readily be removed from the ends of their supporting arbors in an endwise direction.
Other objects of my invention will appear from time to time as the following specification proceeds and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a slitter constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a coiler at. the discharge end thereof, and showing certain parts of the slitter broken away and certain other parts in substantially horizontal section;
Figure 2 is an enlarged end View of the slitter shown in Figure 1, with certain parts shown in section; 1
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view showing the bearing support members, for the arbors for the slitter knives, in an open position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 4--4 of Figure Figure 5 is an enlarged detail fragmentary horizontal sectional view, illustrating certain dee tails of the upper bearing support for the upper slitter knife arbor; and
Figure 6 is a detail view somewhat similar to Figure 5, but showing certain details of the bearing support for the lower slitter knife arbor.
Referring now in particular to the drawings, the slitter includes generally a frame [0 having a pair of pinch rolls H, H at the entering end thereof, which convey the metal between a pair of cooperating vertically spaced rotatable slitting members l2, 12, arranged to slit the metal longitudinally. From said slitting members, the slit metal may pass to a coiler generally indicated by reference character 13, for recoiling the metal. Said coiler is not herein shown or described in detail since it is no part of my present invention.
A motor [5 is provided for driving the pinch and slitting members. The drive from said motor vto said slitting members includes ai'speed reducer [6 which has :drive connection with a flexible coupling ll. Said coupling in turn has driving connection with a horizontal shaft or arbor I8, journaled in parallel spaced upright side frame members I9, 20 and 2| of thej'frame H1. The lower slitting member I2. is mounted on said arbor and is driven therefrom. A spur ear 23 is keyed to said shaft and drives a spur gear 24 on a parallel shaft 25. Said spur gear meshes with a spur gear 26 on a vertically spaced parallel shaft 27, which spur gear meshes with a .spur gear 29 on a shaft or arbor 30 journaled in the side frame members I9, -20 and 2|. Said. last mentioned arbor is disposed in vertical alignment with the arbor l8 and has the upper slitting member l2 mounted thereon. A spur gearl reduction generally indicated by referencecharacter 3| is provided from the spur gear 26to the pinch rolls I I, l I, for driving said pinch rolls.
Referring now to the slitting members I2, I2 and their mounting on the arbors l8 and 30, said slitting members are of a similar construction, so the upper slitting member only will herein be described in detail. Said slitting member includes a quill 33 slidably mounted on the arbor 30 and secured thereto for rotation therewith by means of a pair of nuts 34, 34 threaded on the outer end of said arbor and engaging the outer end of said quill. A pair of nuts 35, 35 are threaded on the end of said quill opposite from said nuts 34, 34 and are adapted to be abutted by a slitter knife indicated by reference character 36. Said slitter knife is in the form of a disk with sharpened outer edgesand is feathered on said quill and abuts and overlaps the edge of another slitter knife 36, on the lower slitting quill. A plurality of knives 36: are spaced along said upper quill and are held in the proper spaced relation by means of spacing collars 38, 38,
mounted on said quill. The nuts 34, 34 threaded on the end of said quill, opposite from the nuts 35, 35, are provided to hold said knives to said quill.
The edges of the knives 36, 36 on the lower quill abut and cooperate with the knives 36, 36 on the upper quill and are spaced along said upper quill. The arrangement is such that upon removal of the nuts 34, 34 from the end of the arbor 30,.the entire quill 33 and the knives and spacers carried thereby may be removed from the end of said arbor for resharpening, or for respacing when it is desired to change the width of the metal slit.
Referring now in particular to the novel form of bearing support for the outer ends of the arbors I8 and 30, which is so arranged as to permit the slitter quills to be removed from the ends thereof in a simple operation, bearing boxes 40 and 4| are provided for supporting said lower and upperarbors respectively. Said bearing boxes are slidably movable between the inner sides 42, 42 of a vertically extending rectangular opening or guide in the side frame member 2| formed by spacing housing posts 2|a, Zla of said frame member and are hingedly supported by said side frame members. Retaining clips 43,
43, engaged with the outsides of said bearing' boxes by cap screws 44, 44, are provided to hold said bearing boxes in a closed position. a Each of said bearing boxes has a ball bearing 45 mounted therein which forms a bearing for its respective arbor. The lower bearing box 40 is provided with a pair of parallel spaced cars 41, 41, projecting outwardly from one side thereof and along the housing post 2|a, for a short distance. The upper ear '47 rests on the upper side of an ear 48, projecting outwardly from the outer face of said housing post 2|a. The lower ear and lower portion of said bearing box 'rest on a bracket 49 projecting outwardly from said housingpost. Said bracket is of suilicient width to support the entire bearing box, when in an open position. The ear 48 is provided with a slot through which a pin 5|, depending from the upper ear 41, is adapted to extend. The bracket 49 is provided with a similar slot 52, through which extends a pin 53, depending from the lower ear 41. The slots 50 and 52 are of such a length that the bearing box 40 may be removed from the housing posts 2|a, 2|a in an endwise direction by rectilinear slidable movement. When said bearing box has been removed from said side frame and housing posts a distance sufiicient to remove the ball bearing 45 from the end of the arbor l8, said bearing box may then be hinged to an open position about the axes of the pins 5| and 53. When in such an open position the slitting quill may readily be removed from the arbor l8 by removal of the nuts 34, 34 from said arbor and by sliding the quill 33 and the slitting knives carried thereby from the end of said arbor, as has previously been described.
The bearing box 4| is mounted between the inner sides 42, 42 of the opening or window formed by the spaced housing posts 2|a, 2|a,
the arbors I8 and 30 may be varied. Said double hinged link includes a bifurcated link 56,. the bifurcated portion of which abuts opposite sides of a link 5! and which is pivotally connected 4| vertically in the opening in said housing post 2|a. Said collar may be interchanged as the vertical spacing between the rolls is changed, to permit variation in the vertical spacing between the slitter knives as they wear down in diameter.
With the construction just described, when the retaining clip 43 is disengaged from the bearing box 4|, said bearing box may be removed from the'housing posts 2|a,2|a in an endwise direction, in the same manner as the lower bearing box 40, and when completely removed from said housing posts and the end of the arbor 30,
it may be swung outwardly to the position shown to said last mentioned link by means of a pivotal in Figure 3, so the slitter quill may readily be removed from said arbor 30.
It may be seen from the foregoing that a novel form of bearing support for the arbors of a pair of slitter quills has been provided, which is so arranged that the slitter quills may readily be removed from their supporting and drive arbors by merely removing the bearing support means therefor from the frame and arbors in an endwise direction, and then swinging said bearing support means outwardly away from the opening in said frame, to permit ready access to the ends of said quills and removal therefrom through the side of the frame.
While I have herein shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the construction thereof and the arrangement of the various parts may be altered without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Furthermore, I do not wish to be construed as limiting my invention to the specific embodiment illustrated, except as it may be limited in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame, a power driven arbor, a rotatable work performing member mounted on said arbor, bearing means for rotatably supporting opposite ends of said arbor in opposite sides of said frame, said bearing means at one end of said frame being mounted on said frame for slidable removal therefrom in an endwise direction and being supported for swinging movement away from said frame, so said work performing member may be removed from said arbor and frame in an endwise direction.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame, a power driven arbor, a rotatable work performing member mounted on said arbor, bearing means for mounting opposite ends of said arbor in opposite sides of said frame, said bearing means at one end of said frame being mounted on said frame for slidable removal therefrom in an endwise direction, so said bearing may be removed from said arbor in an endwise direction and said work performing member may be removed from said frame in an endwise direction, and the mounting for said bearing means at one side of said frame including a bearing block slidably movable into said frame in an endwise direction and a supporting linkage connection between said frame and said block, for supporting said bearing means on said frame so said bearing means may be slidably removed from said frame in an endwise direction and then may be swung outwardly with respect to the opening in said frame and may be supported by said frame in such a position.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame, a power driven arbor, a rotatable work performing member mounted on said arbor, bearing means for mounting opposite ends of said arbor in opposite sides of said frame, said bearing means at one end of said frame being mounted on said frame for slidable removal therefrom in an endwise direction, so said bearing means may be removed from said arbor in an endwise direction and said work performing member may be removed from said arbor and frame in an endwise direction, and the mounting for said bearing means at one side of said frame including a, block slidably movable into said frame and a supporting linkage connection for supporting said block on said frame in such a manner that said block and bearing means may be slidably removed from said frame in a plane parallel to the axis of said arbor and may then be swung outwardly with respect thereto, and be supported by said frame in such a position, said linkage connection in cluding a pair of links pivotally connected together and pivotally connected between said frame and one side of said bearing block.
4. In a slitter, a frame having a pair of parallel spaced vertically extending side walls, a pair of vertically spaced cooperating rot-atably driven slitting knives mounted in said side walls, and removable bearing means for said slitting knives in one of said side walls arranged so said slitting knives can be removed from said frame in an endwise direction, said bearing means including bearing blocks slidably movable into said frame in an endwise direction, and hinged connections between said frame and one side of said bearing blocks, permitting said bearing blocks to be swung to one side of said frame when removed therefrom.
5. In a slitter, a frame having a pair of parallel spaced vertically extending side walls, a pair of parallel arbors journaled in said side walls, a pair of cooperating slitting knives mounted on said arbors, removable bearing means for one of the ends of said arbors including a bearing block for each of said arbors, guided for endwise movement into said frame, and supporting connections between said frame and bearing blocks supporting said bearing blocks for removal from the ends of said arbors by rectilinear movement therealong and can then be swung outwardly from said arbors to permit removal of said knives from said arbors, including bearing boxes having bearings therein for the ends of said arbors and slidably movable into one of said side walls in a direction parallel to the axes of said arbors, and hinged connections between said bearing boxes and side frames for supporting said bearing boxes for movement away from said arbors.
7. In an apparatus of the class described, a support frame including a pair of parallel spaced vertically extending side walls, a power driven r0- tatable work-performing member, bearing means supported in one side wall of said frame for supporting one end of said work-performing member in said frame, other bearing means removably supported on an opposite side wall of said frame for rotatably supporting the opposite end of said rotatable work-performing member in said frame, a mounting for said last mentioned bearing means including a bearing box having said bearing means mounted therein, a rectilinear guide formed in said opposite side wall of said frame for guiding said bearing box and bearing for rectilinear endwise movement onto or away from said rotatable member, and a linkage support for said bearing box on said frame for supporting said bearing box on said frame for removal from said frame in an endwise direction and then for lateral swinging movement away from said rotatable member upon removal of said bearing from the end of said rotatable member, to permit said rotatable member to be removed from said frame in an endwise direction.
