Claims.
The present invention relates to a' snap-on cap for container openings and a cap of such type in which a fluid-tight seal is provided without the use of washers or gaskets. A specific embodiment of the invention involves the combination of such a closure in a spray gun structure for attachment to the discharge nozzle of a container for liquid.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a cap which While readily removable when desired, will not leak or lose its grip during normal service. It is also an object of the invention to provide a means for securing a spray pump to the discharge nozzle of a container for liquid, which means will support the container during operation of the combination as a liquid atomizer. These and other objects of the invention, as well as the structure of the apparatus involved, may be fully understood from the following specification when it is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which As shown in the figure, the cap structure is illustrated as adapted to use with an air pressure device such as a spray gun barrel, to provide a spray gun assembly which may be readily secured to the discharge nozzle of a liquid container or reservoir in such fashion as to firmly support the container thereby and provide a fluidtight seal with the nozzle. In the structure as shown, the cap I is composed of a top 2 having an opening 2a therein, sidewalls 3 and an insert member 5. The insert 5 is maintained in substantially free frictional relation within the shell i by means of an annular retainer cup i2 crimped on the shell i by means of the flange portion 4a on the sidewall 3. The insert 5 has a deep boss I la extending downwardly beyond the peripheral edge of the lip portion 8. Also for the purpose intended, a tubular passage in is provided through the boss and top portion concentric with the opening 2a in the shell top 2. At the outer end of the passage 5a, a depressed portion or recess moulded or cut into the upper surface of the insert provides a receptacle 5b in which may be disposed a disc i3 of felt or another absorbent material.
The cap i is secured to the barrey id of an air pump in any suitable fashion, and preferably by soldering, the barrel l4 having an air discharge opening as at iii. A short syphon tube member 16 is disposed around the opening 2a in fluidtight relation to the cap and is secured to the end of the pump barrel with its outer end terminating at the discharge opening at i5.
The device set forth is shown applied to the discharge nozzle I! of a liquid container. The nozzle is closed by means of the crimped seal l8 provided with a small opening lBa co-incident with the passage 5a in the insert member 5. It is essential that the nozzle end and seal be so formed and joined as to provide a flange which will enter the channel in the cap insert, and provide for fractional engagement between the nozzle end and the cap insert. As shown, the boss Ha engages the upper surface of the seal l8 and under pressure of application, is slightly distorted, as is the lip portion 8 and groove I I], and thereby engages the nozzle end in such manner as to ensure a fluid-tight, weight supporting relationship.
As has been indicated in the foregoing description, the invention is adaptable to numerous modifications without substantially departing from the inventive concept disclosed. Accordingly, it is not intended that the scope of the invention be limited by either drawing or the description set forth for the purpose of illustration, but only by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a liquid spray device, including an air pump, having an air discharge outlet at one end and a reservoir for liquid, having a flanged discharge nozzle member, a means for attaching said pump to the liquid reservoir, comprising a substantially rigid cap shell having an opening in the top portion thereof, a syphon tube member, communicating with the cap opening, secured to said shell, said cap shell and syphon tube secured to the side wall and discharge end portions of the air pump, the syphon tube terminating immediately below the air discharge outlet, a cap insert member of a resilient deformable material disposed in substantially free frictional relation within said shell, the insert having top and annular side wall portions, means integral with said insert side wall portion to engage the discharge nozzle of said reservoir in fluid-tight weight supporting relation, a pad of an absorbent material between the top portion of said insert and the cap, a conduit passage through said top communicating through said pad and shell opening with the syphon tube, and through the discharge nozzle with the liquid reservoir, and retainer means on said shell for the insert member.
2. A spray device of the character described, including a cap member comprising a substantially rigid shell having an opening in the top wall thereof, a syphon tube member, communicating with the cap opening at one end and secured to the shell thereby; a cap insert member for the shell, having top and annular side wall portions, a recess exteriorly of said top below the opening in said shell, a conduit passage through said insert top, concentric with said recess, an annular recess interiorly of the side wall adjacent the top, a disc of absorbent material in the recess in said top, and an insert retainer means on said shell.

A spray device including a cap member comprising a shell having an opening in the top wall thereof, a cap insert member secured in the shell having a top portion and an annular side wall portion, a recess in the portion of the insert member adjoining the top wall and aligned with the opening in said shell, a disc of absorbent material in the recess, a siphon tube member extending outwardly from'the opening, and a conduit passage through said insert member opening into said recess.
4. In a liquid spray device including an air pump having an air discharge outlet at one end, a reservoir for liquid having a flanged discharge nozzle member, a means for attaching the pump to the liquid reservoir comprising a cap shell having an opening in the top portion thereof, a
siphon tube member communicating with the opening and secured to the shell, said cap shell and siphon tube being secured to the side wall and discharge end portions of the air pump, the siphon tube terminating immediately below the air discharge outlet, a cap insert member secured inthe shell having a top and an annular side wall portion with the annular side wall portion secured to the discharge nozzle of the reservoir, a recess in the insert member adjoining the top wall aligned with the opening in said shell, 9. disc of absorbent material in the recess, and a conduit passage through said insert member opening into said recess.
5. A spray device including a cap member comprising a shell having an opening in the top wall thereof, a cap insert member secured in the shell having a top portion and an annular side wall portion, a siphon tube member extending outwardly from the opening, a conduit passage through the insert member communicating with the tube member, a receptacle in the insert member extending across the passage, and a disk of absorbent material in the receptacle.
