RULING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,870, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed July 19, 1880. (No model.)
lithographers, engravers, and others to produce equally-distant parallel lines, the distance between which can be readily regulated.
The object of my in vention is to provide means for raising the pencil or engraving-tool, and to adjust it in position for ruling the adjacent line; also, to return the carriage bearing the tool to its normal position and to lower the tool in theproper place. The apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine, partially in section, and Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the machine.

The letters a to indicate guide-rails, upon which is arranged to travel the carriage or frame I), on which are mounted the bearings of all the operative parts of the machine.
The letter 0 indicates a screw-spindle suitably journaled on the frame I), and is adapted to freely revolve, but is prevented from lateral or side motion. One end of the spindle 0 extends outwardly a short distance, and upon such is mounted the cog-wheel q and the crank y.
The nut 61 fits around the screw-shaft c and carries the tool-frame c, with the tool 0 and a movable weight, w, for balancing the tool.
The turning of the crank y to the right or left will cause the nut d, with the tool-frame c, to travel upon the screw-spindle.
Several essential parts of the machine are arranged along a shaft, g, one end of which passes through a stationary disk, t, with the stop-pin l, and the clamp a with the set-screw 'v.
A ratchet-wheel, z, and a cog-Wheel, p, are keyed to the shaft 9. The hand-lever f, carrying the pawl h, and the wedge k and the cam m, the latter clamped to the lever f, are arranged to turn freely on the shaft 9.
There are two levers, n and 00, both to be acted upon by the cam m for the purpose of raising the tool before the backward traveling motion of the tool commences.
In operation the instrument is placed on the portion of the sheet or stone to be ruled, and the tool 0 placed above its starting-point by turning the screw-shaft c by means of the crank y. The length of the lines is then regulated by setting the clamp a on the disk t at the desired distance from the stoppin I. Then, grasping the handle of the lever f, the first line will be made by drawing the Whole apparatus to the right. In reversing the motion of the hand the cam on will, through the lever n, act on the lever 00, depressing the same, and through it the rear portion of the tool-fraine 6, thus raising the tool 0. Continuing the motion, the lever f, through the pawl h, will turn the ratchet-wheel z, and by it the shaft g and the cog-wheel p and pinion q, to feed the carriage farther along.
The cog-wheel p is of larger diameter than the corresponding wheel g on the shaft 0, and is introduced to accelerate the revolution of the screw-shaft. Thus the screw will be turned and the nut d, with the tool-frame 0, carried a certain distance till the wedge will strike the stop-pin l, thus terminating the motion of the lever f.
Proceeding farther on, the entire carriage will be moved to the desired starting-line and the described operation continued as long as desired.
It will be seen that, the machine being selfacting, the toolwill never be left on the stone except when drawing a line. It will be low ered slowly, and all the mistakes arising from regulating the spaces between each two lines by hand will be avoided.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a ruling-machine for paper, stone, 8170., the combination of the tool 0, the tool-frame e, nut d, screw-shaft c, shaft g, cog-wheels q and 19, wheel 6, clamp to, lever f h, eccentric m, levers n and no, disk t, and stop I, all arranged to operate substantially as described.
