TUBULAR STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,859, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed June 14, 1880. (N 0 model.) Patented in Belgium August 24, 1878. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST SOLVAY, of Brussels, in the Kingdom of Belgium, manufacturer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tubular Steam -Boi1ers, (for which I have obtained a patent in Belgium, No. 46,001, bearing date August 24, 1878,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tubular steam-boilers in which the wateris contained in inclined tubes placed in series one above the other and connected at their ends, so as to form continuous passages to conduct the water and steam from the bottom to the top of the boiler, where the steam and the water accompany it, pass ofi into a reservoir or decanter, the steam escaping through a steanrpipe, while the water falls to the lower part of the said reservoir or decanter, and, separating from the impurities which settle at the bottom, is returned through a feed-pipe into the bottom tubes, where it mixes with the water already in the boiler; and my invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described in the construction and arrangement ofthe parts of such boilers; and in the means of connecting the tubes one with the other, by which improve ments greater simplicity, durability, and efficiency are obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents, in longitudinal section, a tubular boiler with decanting apparatus constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of one-half of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of parts of two'of the boiler-tubes, illustrating by a detailed'view, drawn to a larger scale, means adopted by me for connecting the ends of the said tubes together. Fig. 4 is an end View of Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2, a is the furnace and body of the boiler. b b are the water-tubes, placed in series one above the other. Upon the ends of each of the said tubes is a metal plate or head-piece, 0, (shown in section in Fig. 3.) The ends of the tubes 1) are passed through tapering holes in the said plates or head-pieces c, and are then expanded so as to fit the said holes.
(Z (Z, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, are metal bends or curved tubes, the ends of which are tapered so as to correspond with the expanded mouths of the tubes 1), and when placed in position, as shown, to form a tight joint therewith.
e is a horizontal pipe underneath. the lower range of tubes 1), and communicating with the lower tubes by means of bends or curved tubes 0, which engage by one end in the tube ends I), and by their other end in branch pipes of similar shape formed upon the pipe 0.
f is a horizontal pipe similar to the pipe 6, but placed above the highest range of tubes 1), and communicating therewith by means of the bends or curved tubes f. The said horizontal pipe f communicates at each end by a pipe, {1, with a decanter, h, of which there are two, one on each side of the boiler, and the said. decanters h are connected to the horizontal pipe 0 by means of the pipes 13, of which there are two, one for each decanter.
The upper part of the boiler (1. forms a flue extendin g over the whole surface of the boiler, or nearly so, and opening into the lower part by three or more passages, through which the flames pass, and may be closed and opened partially or wholly by means of dampers, (not shown in the drawings) so as to regulate the draft and the circulation of the flames at the different parts of the boiler. By this means the necessity for using deviating plates to direct the flames is obviated.
The tapering ends of the bends or curved tubes (I, being inserted into the ends of the tubes 1), are pressed and securely held in position by screw-bolts m 11:, Figs. 3 and 4, screwed into the cross bars or beamsa a, the ends of which are held by arms 0, formed upon or jointed to theplates orhead-pieces c c, as shown on the right and left hand sides of the said Figs. 3 and 4.
Fi 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 6 an end View, illustrating a modification of the mode of attaching the plates or end pieces, 0, to the ends of the tubes b, and of the arrangement of the tubes 1), which, in Figs. 5 and 6, are disposed diagonally, so asto form a zigzag communication between the tubes from the bottom to the top range.
It will be seen that the ends of the tubes 1)- are enlarged and threaded at b, where they are screwed into the plates or head-pieces c. In other respects the joints are similar to those represented in Figs. 3 and 4.
By the improvements hereinbefore described it will be seen that each of the tubes, beingindependent, may easily be removed and replaced without interfering with the others, and the metal plates or head-pieces c 0, though simply placed or screwed upon the ends of the tubes, are securely fixed thereto, and a tight jointis formed when the bends or curved tubes areinserted in the expanded portion of the tubes.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a tubular steam-boiler, the combination, with its series of boiler-tubes, of two water reservoirs or decanters at opposite sides of the boiler, a horizontal pipe, 0, connected with the lower range of boiler-tubes, and also connected with the reservoirs by a pipe, i, and the pipe'f, connecting with the upper range of boiler-tubes and with the said water-reservoirs, substantially as herein shown and specified.
2. In a tubular steam-boiler, the combination, with the boiler-tubes having expanded ends, of plates or heads fitted upon the expanded ends of said tubes, the bonds or curved tubes 11, having their ends fitted within the ends of said boiler-tubes, and clamping devices for maintaining said bent tubes in place, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the boiler-tubes having expanded ends, of the plates 0, fitted upon said ends of the tubes, the curved tubes (1, having their ends fitted within the ends of the boiler-tubes, the arms 0 0 of the plates 0, cross-bars n at the upper ends of said arms, and screw-bolts 11, passed through the crossbars and arranged to bear upon the curved tubes to hold them securely in place, substantially as herein specified.
4. The combination, with the boiler-tubes, of the plates 0, fitted upon their ends and provided with arms 0, the curved tubes d, having their ends fitted to the ends of the boiler-tubes, and set-screws passed through cross-bars of the arms 0, and bearing upon the curved tubes,
substantially as specified.
