Description
A. W. J. MASON; Odorless Excavating Apparatus.
Patented Aug 31, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED W. .J. MASON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
ODORLESS EXCAVATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,827, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed June 21, 1879.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. J. MASON, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have in vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Odorless Apparatus for .Oleaning Privy- Vaults; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to odorless apparatus or means for cleaning privy-vaults; and the novelty consists of an air-tight elevator, in combination with a receiving-tank and deodorizer.
The object of this improvement is to do away with the expensive air-pumps now employed in this system, and substitute in lieu thereof a portable air-tight elevator which shall be simple and cheap in construction.
On the drawing, A is intended to represent a privy-vault, B an air-tight elevator, C a receiving-tank, and D a deodorizing-vessel.
The elevator B, like others of its class, has its casing composed of two tubes, to b, the ends of which are connected, as at c 01. I11 these ends are fitted, upon shafts c f, suitable drums, over which operates an endless band, G, the latter provided with a number of elevatingbuckets, as at h.
The lower end of the casing isleft open and provided with a screen, I, and over the same is secured, after each operation, an air-ti ht cap, L, so as to effectually exclude all smell at the said point during the removal or transportation of the same. The dischageopening at the upper end of the casing should also be provided with a detachable cap for a like purpose.
The tank 0 is furnished at one side wit-h a gage, i, to exhibit the quantity of matter therein, and the deodorizer is provided with a removable cover, 70, to admit of a furnace being placed thereupon. The tank 0 is connected for operation with the upper end of the elevator and deodorizer by means of pipes l and on.
To operate the invention, first removethe air-tight cap L from the lower end of the elevator, then sink the said end \Vllll its screen into the privy-vault, nextremove the cap from the upper end of the casing, and make the pipe-connections between the elevator, tank, and (leodorizer. Remove the cover from the latter vessel, and place in lieu of same a furnace with lighted charcoal or other fuel therein. The machine is" then put-into operation by turning the cranks of the elevator in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The gage on the receiving-tank will show when to stop the apparatus, and the fire in the furnace wtll destroy all gases passing into the deodorizer.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The elevator B, composed of tubes (1. b, united at their ends, but having the lower end reticulated, and the endless band G, provided with a series of buckets passing over drums arranged on the shafts cf, substantially as set forth.-
2., In an apparatus of the odorless class, the elevator B, provided with an endless band, Gr, carrying a series of buckets, and having the lower end which enters the vault reticulated and provided with the air-tight cap L, covering the said reticulated portion of the elevator, substantially as described.
3. An odorless excavating apparatus consisting of the elevator B, carrying a plurality of elevating-buckets, and having its lower end reticulated, a connectingpipe, Z, receivingtank 0, with transparent gage, connectingpipe m, and a deodorizer, D, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
ALFRED WV. J. MASON.
In presence of FRANK REGEL, HUGH PIERSON.
