AMACHINE FOR CUTTING PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,813, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed January 22, 1880.
To all whom t may ooaocm:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. KENT, of Brooklyn, in Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Paper, etc., of which the following is a specification. Y My improvements consist in the combination, in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of a clamp for holding the. paper, means for actuating the same to clamp or eX- ert a pressure on the paper, and means for adjustin g the clamp to the paper before itis actuated to clamp or exert a pressure on the paper, whereby a very desirable and. effective operation of the clamp is attained.
They also consist in the combination, in a Inachine for cutting paper and like material, of a knife, and preferably radius-bars, connectin g the knife to aiixed part of the frame, levers extending transverscl y of the machine, and connected at their outer ends with the knife and at the inner ends to a crank carried by a rotary shaft extending` longitudinally of the machine, whereby a simple and effective mechanism for'operating the knife is attained.
They also consist in details andcombinations of parts hereinafter describedv and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view-of a paper-cutting machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is aback view t-hereof. Eig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the same, taken on the plane of the line o ao, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the plane of the line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Adesignates the table of the machine, where the paper or other material to be cutis placed. It may be of woodor other suitable material, and supported by a frame-work consisting of side pieces, B, and `cross-pieces or stretchers B. Any desired style of gages may be employed in connection with the table to facilitate the proper adjust-ment of the paper or other material before it is subjected to the knife.
C designates a clamp for holding the paper in position on the table while being cut. It
consists of a bar extending across the table and connectedat the ends by connecting-rods D with levers E, which extend lengthwise of the machine in close proximity to the side pieces, B, of the supporting framework of the machine. are connected, by means of connecting-rods F, to the sides of wheels G, mounted on. a shaft, H, which is so supported in bearings near the front of the machine that it may be turned by means of a hand-wheel, I, or otherwise, to adjust the wheels Gr into different positions. These wheels really form adjustable fulcrums for the levers E, and in order that they may not, except when desired, change their positions, I preferably provide their' peripheries with ratchet-teeth and combine with them a pawl or pawls, J, to prevent them from turning backward. Such pawl or pawls will be provided with a convenient handle for disengagin g them from the ratchet-teeth.
lt is intended that the forward ends of the levers E be adjusted by the mechanism just described to suit the pile of paper to be cut and bring the clamp down upon it before exerting the clamping pressure on the clamp.
The rear ends of the levers E are connected to a yoke, K, arranged at the back of themachine, and impelled downward by a cam, L, arranged on a rotary shaft, M 5 vhence on the rotation of the latter the said levers are made to draw down the clamp O on the paper with great force, so that it will hold the paper securely in position.
A counter-balance consisting of a weight or a spring, N, secured to the trame-work of the machine and to the yoke K, returns the latter to its normal position when released from the action of the cam L.
The rotary shaft M is actuated through a gear-wheel, M', mounted on it, and a pinion, O', mounted on a shaft, O, that is driven by means of a large bevel-gear wheel, O2, mounted on it, and a pinion, P', or a pinion, l, on the driving-shaft P.
To provide for changing the throw or swing of the levers E, I may employ awedge, X, arranged under the table A, and capable of adjustment forward and backward byalever, Y, connected with it near the front of the machine, to limit the upward motion of the yoke At theforward end these levers E t IOO K more or less, and consequently the action of the cam L upon it.
Q designates the knif'e of the machine. lt is connected by radius-bars It to a crossbar, B2, of the frame-work of the machine, and travels up and down through suitable guides or ways in the side pieces,B, of the said framework, deriving a longitudinal shearing action from its connection to the radins-bars. It is connected at the ends, by connecting-rods S, to the outer ends of levers T, extending transversely of the machine, and connected by links U to a yoke, U', on a wrist or pin, p, constituting a crank on the front of a wheel, V, which, as here shown, is a gearwheel mounted on a shaft, V, extending longitudinally of the machine and deriving motion from a pinion, W, on a shaft, W. This shaft XV, by a large bevel-gear wheel, W2, derives motion from the pinion P', or a pinion, P2, on the driv ing-shaft P. l
The connecting-rods S may be made ot'sec.- tionsconnected by turn-buckles, whereby their length may be adjusted, if desirable.
The pinions P and P2 are loose on the driving-shaft P, but' may be separately locked to turn therewith by means of clutches P3, arranged on the shaft, so as to be adjustable thereon along the splines or feathers. rlhcse clutches P3 have connected to them arms P4, which are mounted on a slider-bar, PG, cxtending transversely across the machine and susceptible of being shifted by a lever, P5, extending nearly to the front of the machine. By means of this lever the clutches P3 may be adjusted to release both pinions P and P2, and hence the machine maybe stopped without stopping the driving-shaft, or the clutches maybe adjusted to release one pinion from and lock the other to the driving-shaft; and hence the machine may be driven forward for work or reversed with out altering the drivin gshaft or its actuating mechanism.
It Will be seen that by my invention I produce a very simple and compact machine, which may be readily stopped and started,
'driven forward for work, and reversed without altering the driving-shaft, which provides for adjusting` its clamp and for subsequently forcing the clamp down upon the paperin a very effective manner, but Without waste of power, and which has a very powerful knifeoperatiu g mechanism.
Although shown in connection with a machine designed to be operated by power, my improvements may, with great advantage, be embodied in a machine suitable to be operated by hand.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a machine for cutt-ing paper and like material, of a clamp for holding the paper, means for actuating the same to clamp or exert a pressure on the paper, and means for adjusting the clamp to the paper before it is actuated to clamp or exert a pressure on the paper, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of a clamp for holding the paper, levers for actuating the clamp, adjustable fulcrums for said levers,whereby the clamp is adjusted to the paper before it is actuated to clamp or exert a pressure on the paper, and a cam for actuating the clamp to exert a pressure on the paper, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of the clamp (l, connecting-rods D, levers E, connecting-rods F, wheels G, yoke K, cam L, and a counterbalance for readjusting the'levers, substantially as specified.
4. The combination,in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of a knife, levers extending transversely of the machine, and connected at their outer ends with the knife and at their inner ends to a crank carried by a shaft extending longitudinally of the m'achine, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of a knife, radiusbars connecting said knife with a fixed part of the frame, vlevers extending transversely of the machine, and connected at their outer ends with said knife and at their inner ends with a crank carried by a shaft extending longitudinall y of the machine, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, in a machine for cutting paper and like material, of the knife Q, radiusbars 1t, connecting-rods S, levers T, links U, yoke U', and crank p, substantially as specitied.
7. The combination, in a machine forcutting paper and like material, of a clamp, the cam L for actuating the clamp, shafts and gears M M' 0 O O2, a knife, the crank p for operating the knife-shafts and gears V Vl W W W2, andthe driving-shaft P, with its pinion P or P2, substantially as specified.
