UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. COLE, OF NORTHVILLE, NEW YORK.
COUNTER AND HEEL PROTECTOR.'
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,764, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed June 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at N orthville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Counter and Heel Protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a boot or shoe heel and counter, showing the application of my invention and Fig. 2, a detail view, in perspective, of the counter and heel protector or support.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of devices adapted to be connected to the heel and counter of aboot or, shoe for preventing the wear upon one side of the heel, and at the same time forming a counter-support, the device being so constructed that it may be readily adapted for heels of various heights. These objects I attain by the special construction and form as illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the counter, and B the heel, of a boot or shoe. The counter and heel protector, which is composed of wrought metal, consists of the plate 0, connected-by screw or other convenient means to the under side of the heel, where the greatest wear usually comes. The plate 0 is formed with a' curved brace, D, passing up around the side of the counter in a circu- (No model.)
lar shape, the end thereof projecting down to the front part of the heel, and fastened to it by screws, thus forming a complete support for the counter A.
The plate 0, where it comes around the corn er of the heel, is made thicker, as shown at a, so that it will not wear through. The plate 0 and brace D being composed of malleable metal, the brace can be bent to suit heels of different heights, thereby adapting the device to large or small heels.
A very important feature in my invention is that of the device being capable of use upon most every style and form of heels, the brace always being directly over the tread of the heel. It should also be noticed that the plate extends up around the corner of the heel, increasing its base and preventing wear at the corner.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A heel and counter protector composed of malleable metal, and consisting of the plate G and circular brace D, having perforations for connecting it to the heel, said brace being adapted to rest against the counter, and to be enlarged to suit difi'erentsized heels, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. COLE.
Witnesses EDWIN ALLEN, ANDREW PALMER.
