FIRE-KINDLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,754, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed July 22, 1880. (N model.)

To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, WILLIAM WIR'I BRANCH, I

Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Madison, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fire-kindlers, as will be hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fire-kindler complete and ready for use; Fig. 2,.a perspective of same unrolled. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 show modifications of my invention.

A represents a small block or stick of wood or other combustible substance or material. B is a thin shaving or sliver of wood cut latitudinally with the grain of timber, one edge of which is out very thin or to a feather for facility or use in lighting, the other end being of suitable thickness to give it strength and solidity for wrapping about stick A and continue burning a sufiicient time to completely kindle and start a fire. The stick A is laid upon one end of the strip of shaving B, as shown in Fig. 2, and forms the support or nucleus about which is wound or Wrapped the shaving B, and when wound fastened by a tack or brad, a, Fig. 1. Said kindler may be constructed by winding the shaving or strip B about one or more center pieces or sticks, A, and with thin pieces of wood 2), Fig.6, between the layers, separating and forming airspaces between them for drafts of air, thus aiding the combustion of the entire kindler;

or holes may be made through body of the Y kindler for the same purpose.

The kindler may be made with or without the block A, or by using a shaving with both edges cut thinor feathered, as shown in Fig. 5, the strip being thickest through the middle; or by lapping the thick edges of two shavings or slivers, as shown in Fig. 4, and wrapping around the block; or by wrapping the block with two shavings the thick ends of which are placed together. It may also be made by piling short pieces of the shavings or slivers with their thick edges one upon another until of suitable size for the purpose intended. In order to more complete ignition and combustion, said kindler may be coated in or saturated with melted resin or other substance quickly ignitible.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A fire -kindler composed of a stick or blocks of wood or other combustible material, A, forming a center about which is wrapped a strip or shavings, B, with thin or feathered edges, with or without the thin pieces I) between the layers, in the manner and for the purpose described.

2. A fire-kindler composed of a series of shavings or slivers, B, placed with their thick edges one upon another until of suitable size, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The 001]] bination, in a fire-kindler, of a center stick or sticks of wood or other combustible material, A, with shavings or strips B, out latitudinally with grain of timber and having thin or feathered edges, and thin pieces of wood b, placed at intervals between the shavings or layers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
