As will be seen from the drawings our display apparatus comprises, in general, an upright cabinet l5 having therein adisplay recess 1 6 presenting a plurality of walls or display areas, such cabinet also containing a plurality of strips of sheet material carrying the difierent wall finishes or coverings to be displayed and power operated mechanism for selectively driving the strips.
The cabinet I5 may be of any suitable construction and as here shown comprises an inner frame [5a. formed of structural members and a plurality of outer walls or panels i512 formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and attached to such inner frame. The cabinet is so constructed that the recess It extends laterally thereinto as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 and opens through two of the adjacent upright outer walls of the cabinet. The recess is defined by, or extends between, two intersecting upright walls or display areas Ita and l6b and two vertically spaced substantially horizontal walls or display areas I and I611. When the cabinet I 5 is viewed from the front, as illustrated in Fig. 1,. the display recess 15 has the appearance of a corner portion of a room of which the areas la and I6?) correspond with the side walls and the areas I60 and [6d correspond respectively with the floor and ceiling. The cabinet is constructed with suitable walls or panels therein corresponding with these display areas, and, as will be presently explained more in detail, strips of sheet material carrying the different wall finishes or coverings are arranged to extend across and in front of such walls or panels. In Fig. 4 we show two such upright walls or panels Ila and I'll) in the cabinet corresponding with the upright-display areas I60. and l6b of the recess It. We also show in Fig. 4 the strips 18 and 19 of sheet material extending across and in front of the upright walls Ila and llb. In Figs. 4 and we show vertically spaced panels or walls 20 and 2| built into the cabinet to correspond with the display areas H50 and l5d and forming the floor and ceiling of the display recess. In Fig. 5 we show a strip 22, similar to the strips l8 and I9, extending across and in front of the ceiling panel 2| and in Fig. 4 we have represented a portion of a rug or other covering 23 which may be laid on the floor 25.
The strips I3, l9, and 22 may be formed of paper, fabric, or other flexible material and may each have a plurality of contiguous or adjacent sections thereon representing the different wall coverings or finishes to be displayed. These sections correspond substantially in size and shape with the panels Ila, I12) and 2 I, across which the strips extend, so that by moving these strips across the panels the wall coverings or finishes to be viewed in the display areas I6a, I62), and l6d of the recess it can be changed as desired.
The strips are carried by pairs of winding rollers which are rotatably supported in the cabinet and are adapted to be selectively driven to move the strips in either direction across the display areas and thereby bring the different sections substantially into register with such display areas. The strip l8 which serves the display area I61) is carried by the upper and lower winding rollers 24a and 24b and has its opposite ends connected to these rollers. For directing the strips across the face of the upright panel Ila we may also provide a pair of upper and lower guide rollers 25a and 25b as shown in Fig. 2. Similarly the strip l9 which serves the display area 16a is carried by a pair of upper and lower Winding rollers 23a and 26b and is directed across I and 3| which, as shown in Fig. 2, are connected respectively with the upper and lower winding rollers by pairs of bevel gears 30a and 3la. Theupright shafts 30 and 3! may be rotatably supported in suitable bearings 32 mounted on the inner frame |5a of the cabinet. Between the aligned upright shafts 30 and 31 we provide a shaft section 33 which is adapted to be positively driven and to be connected with one or the other of the upright shafts depending upon which of the winding rollers is to be driven.
The adjacent ends of the shafts 30 and 33 carry cooperating clutch members 35 and 36 of a clutch 31 and' 2,317,337 I .7 I a. i
the adjacent ends of the shafts 3| and 33 carry similar clutch members 38 and 36 of a clutch 40. The positively driven shaft section 33 is rotatably supported by one or more bearings 4| and is axially slidable therein for engaging one or the other of the clutches 31 and 43. The driving means for the shaft section 33 may comprise a worm gear 42 carried thereby and a worm 43 meshing with such gear and driven from an electric motor 44 by means of a belt 45 extending around pulleys 46 and 41 carried respectively by the worm shaft 43a and the motor shaft 44a.
The driven shaft section 33 may be shifted by any suitable control means and in this instance. we show a manually operable lever 48 for this purpose. The lever 48 has its inner end pivotally connected or fulcrumed on the frame I5a as indicated at 49 and its outer end extends through a slot in the front outer wall of the cabinet and carries'an operating handle or knob 50. Adjacent its inner or fulcrumed end the lever 48 has a forked portion 48a connected with the shaft 33 through sleeve 5| arranged thereon sof'tha't swinging of the lever upwardly on its fulcrum will lift the shaft to engage the clutch 31, and downward swinging of the lever will lower the shaft to engage the clutch 40. Thus when the control knob is lifted, the clutch 31 will be engaged and the upper winding roller 24a will be driven by the shaft 30 and the strip 18 will move upwardly across the display area I62); and downward movement of the control knob 50. will cause the lower winding roller 24b to be driven through the clutch 40 and the shaft 3| to cause corresponding downward movement of the strip across the display area l6b. When the winding roller 24a is being driven the strip is withdrawn from the lower winding roller 24b and such Withdrawal of the strip will cause the shaft 3i and the bevel gear 3 la to be driven as idlers. At this time the shaft 3i will rotate in a direction opposite to that of the driven shaft section 33 but there will be no interference between these shafts inasmuch as the clutch members 38 and 39 of the clutch 40 are separated or disengaged.
For driving the winding rollers 26a and 26b we provide another such pair of upright substantially aligned shafts 53'and 54 and a. positively driven intermediate shaft section 55. The shafts 53, 54, and 55 may be arranged adjacent the upright shafts 30, 3!, and 33 and the intermediate shaft section 55 may be driven from theshaft section 33 through gears 56 and 51. The upper end of the shaft 53 may be connected with the upper winding roller 260. by a pair of bevel gears 53 and the lower end of the shaft 54 may be connected,
with the lower winding roller 2% by a pair of bevel gears 59. The adjacent ends of the shafts 53 and 55 carry cooperating members, 60 and iii of a clutch 62 and the adjacent ends of the shafts 54 and 55 carry cooperating members 63 and 64 of a clutch 65. 1 e
The driven shaft section 55 is rotatable in suitable bearings 66 and is axially slidable therein for engaging one or the other of the clutches 62 and 65. We provide a control lever 61 which is fulcrumed on the frame [5a in a manner sinnlar to the control lever 48 and has a'forked portion 67a connected with the shaft 55 through a sleeve 68 whereby this shaft can be-lifted to engage the clutch 62 or lowered to engagethe clutch 65. The outer end of the lever 67 projectsthrough a slot of the outer wall of the cabinet and carries an operating knob 69. When the knob 69 is lifted the clutch 62 will be engaged to drive the upper winding roller 26a and cause upward movement of the strip I9 across the panel Ill) and downward movement of the control knob will engage the clutch 65 and cause the lower winding roller 26b to be driven thereby moving the strip is downwardly across this panel.
The clutches 31, 49, 62, and 85 may be of any suitable construction such as that represented in Fig. 12. As here shown these clutches may be of the friction type and may have a disk 18 of suitable friction material disposed between the operating members thereof. This friction disk serves to drivingly connect the clutch members with each other whenever they are pressed against the disk by relative axial shifting. The friction disk may be retained in place between the clutch members by extending one of the aligned shafts therethrough.
The winding rollers 28a and 28b for the ceiling' strip 22 can be driven by an arrangement of shafts similar to that above described for thewinding rollers of the strips I3 and i9, or, as shown in this instance, may be connected with a pair of relatively short spaced parallel shafts II and I2 by the chains I3 and 14 extending over sprockets 'I Ia and 12a carried by these shafts. A positively driven shaft 15 is arranged to extend between a pair of worm gears I6 and TI mounted on the shafts II and i2 and carries a worm I8 which is disengaged from the worm gears when the shaft 15 is in an intermediate or neutral position. This shaft is arranged for swinging movement to bring the worm 18 in mesh with one or the other of the worm gears 16 and I1 depending upon which of the winding rollers is to be driven. The shaft I may have a pulley 19 thereon which is connected with the pulley 46 of the motor 44 by a belt 89.
To provide for such swinging of the shaft I5 we may arrange this shaft with one end thereof journaled in a rocking bearing BI and its other end journaled in a bearing 82 carried by a swinging operating lever 93. The inner end of the lever 83 is pivoted on a fulcrum pin 84 so that this lever swings about the same axis as that about which the bearing SI rocks. The outer end of the lever 83 may be connected with a link 85 which is, in turn, connected with an operating lever 85 arranged adjacent the operating levers 51 and 48. The inner end of the lever 86 may be fulcrumed on the frame I5a as indicated at 81 and its outer end may extend through a slot into the outer front wall of the cabinet and may carry an operating knob 38. When the knob 88 is lifted, upward motion will be transmitted through the link 85 to lift the lever 83 and the outer end of the shaft I5, thereby bringing the worm l8 into mesh with the worm gear "I6. This will result in the winding roller 2%, being driven in a direction to take up the strip 22 and cause the same to move across the ceiling panel 2| toward the left as seen in Fig. 5. Downward movement of the control knob 88 will, in a similar manner, cause the worm I8 to mesh with the worm gear 11 and drive the winding roller 28b in a direction to cause the strip 22 to move across the ceiling panel 2! in the opposite direction, that is, towards the right as seen in Fig. 5.
The driving motor 44 may be operated continuously while our display cabinet is in use, but we prefer to provide control means for the motor such that it will be started only when one of the control knobs is moved to cause a desired actuation of one of the strips. We also prefer to have the motor automatically deenergized as soon as the control knob is moved back to its neutral position for stopping the movement of the strip. In Figs. 8 and 9 we show apparatus for controlling the energization of the motor in response to movement of any one of the control knobs 50, 69, and 88. This control apparatus comprises a switch 90 located in the motor circuit and switch actuating means for closing the switch in response to either upward or downward movement of one of the control knobs from its neutral position and for opening the switch when the knob is returned to its neutral position.
The switch 99 may be of the tilting mercuryglobule type and may be mounted on an arm 9| carried by a rock shaft 92 which extends transversely to the control levers 48, 61, and 85. Each of the control levers extends between a pair of stationary cams 93 and carries a block 94 which is guided between the spaced cams and is slidable on the lever. The block 94 carries a pair of cam followers in the form of the rollers 95. The cams 93 are so formed or shaped as to provide a low or neutral point 96, which is located opposite the neutral position of the control lever, and a pair of oppositely inclined cam portions 9'! extending away from such neutral point. When the control lever is moved either upwardly or downwardly away from its neutral or mid position, the followers 95 ride up on the inclined portions 91 and cause the block 94 to be slid inwardly on the lever against the action of a compression spring 98.
The inward movement of the block 94 is made to oscillate the rock shaft 92 as by providing the latter with a depending arm 99 arranged to be engaged by the pivot pin I90 of one of the cam followers 95. The depending arms 99 correspond in number with the control levers and extend adjacent thereto as shown in Fig. 8. Each of the depending levers 99 may have opposite inclined portions 99a thereon against one or the other of which the pin I90 will bear and cause oscillation of the rock shaft 92 in response toswinging of the control lever. The arm 9| of the rock shaft 92 and the switch 90 carried by this arm are so arranged that when the control knobs are all in the neutral position, that is to say, when the cam followers 95 are at the low points 96 of the earns, the switch will be in its open position and the motor 44 will be deenergized. The springs 98 normally urge the blocks 94 outwardly so that the cam followers 95 will react on the cam faces 9'! to hold the control levers in the intermediate or neutral position in which the switch 90 is open and the motor is deenergized. A torsional spring IGI may be arranged on the rock shaft 92 so as to act in a direction tending to hold the arms 99 against the pins I09 and to normally rock the shaft in a direction to urge the switch 90 toward its open position. With the control apparatus just described it will be seen that as soon as any one of the control knobs 59, 69, or 88 is moved either upwardly or downwardly from its neutral position the switch 90 will be tilted up to energize the motor 44 and one of the clutches, of the pair corresponding with the control knob which is moved, will be engaged to drive the corresponding winding roller.
For illuminating the display areas of the recess I6 we may provide incandescent lamps I02 at one or more points adjacent the lower outer edges of the recess. Housings I 93 for the incandescent lamps I92 may be formed by curving portions of the outer walls of the cabinet I5 inwardly part way into th recess I6 as shown in Figs. 1 and 11. A reflector I04 may form a part of the lamp housing and may be mounted in .back of the incandescent lamps I02 andin a position to reflect light into the recess I6. The lamp housing I03 may also include a transparent or colored wall section I05 extending between the one edge of the reflector I04 and the frame structure l5a as shown in Fig. 11. The lamps I02 can be turned on and off by means of a suitable switch |02a on the front of the cabinet. As shown in Fig. 1, the lamps I02 may be locatedin one or all of the bottom, side and top outer edges of the display recess.
As a retaining means for the adjacent edges of the upright strips I8 and I9 we may provide 7 an upright tube or rod I06 formed of transparent .material or any other suitable substance.. This .tube may be mounted in the inner corner of the recess I6 so as to overlie the edges of the strips l8 .and I9 as a guide and retain such edges smoothly in place. The tube I06 may be mounted in the cabinet by a pair of upper and lower projections I 01 and I08 arranged to extend intothe ends of the tube. One of the projections, in this instance the lower projection I08, is carried by a resilient arm I09 which can be flexed in a direction to withdraw the projection from the end of the tube to permit the latter to be removed from the cabinet when this is desirable. If desired,
strips IIO of suitable material may be located 0 arrangement by which the movement of the strips can be conveniently and accurately controlled.
