Description
L. G. MIDA BLACKCQJUT Filed Feb. 21, 1942 Patented Apr. 20, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BLACKOUT Lucia G. Mida, Chicago, Ill.
Application February 21, 1942, Serial No. 431,779
5 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in blackouts, adopted for use in preventing the escape of light from buildings and has for its primary object the provision of a simple and effective arrangement for the purpose which may be readily applied and removed when desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by refer ence to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is an interior view of a blackout arrangement embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 an enlarged view illustrating snap fastener elements employed in the arrangement.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises an opaque curtain H! equipped along its top and side edges with a plurality of snap fastener elements I! equipped with pliable prongs l2 by means of which the same are secured to said curtain as indicated.
Corresponding snap fastener elements ll are equipped with pliable prongs l3 by means of which they are secured to the inner folds 14 of hems on the top and sides of any usual or desired form of drapery [5 supported in the usual way by supporting elements 16 on a curtain rod I! arranged in the usual Way over the inside of a window [8 or the like. As will be noted, the fastener elements 12 are secured in place by the prongs It to correspond with the spacing of the elements I! and the prongs l3 penetrating only the inner folds I of the drapery hems, being clinched or spread as shown in Fig. 3, within the hems, and whereby said prongs are entirely concealed and therefore do not mar the ornamental appearance of the outer faces of the drapery l5. It is also to be noted that the blackout curtain is entirely supported by the usual ornamental drapery at a window or the like so that all that will be necessary to arrange for the mounting of the blackout curtain is to attach the snap fastener elements 52 to the inner folds of the hems of the drapery in proper spacing to register and correspond with the fastener elements 12 on the edges of the blackout curtain. Obviously by this arrangement the blackout curtain may be readily applied and removed as and when desired. The form and arrangement of parts described is a simple and effective one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form and arrangement, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with drapery for a window, of an opaque member separably securable to and entirely supported by said drapery and at least as large as the window opening.
2. The combination specified in claim 1 in which the drapery is provided with hems and v the opaque member is secured to said hems.
3. The combination specified in claim 1 in which the drapery is provided with hems having inner folds and the opaque member is secured to the inner folds of said hems.
4. The combination specified in claim 1 in which the drapery is provided with inwardly turned hems and attaching elements for the opaque member having pliable prongs are secured to the inner folds of said hems by said prongs penetrating said folds and being clinched within the hems.
5. The combination specified in claim 1 in which the drapery is provided with inwardly turned hems and elements of snap fasteners having pliable prongs are secured to the inner folds of said hems by said prongs penetrating said folds and being clinched within the hems and the opaque member is in the form of a flexible curtain and is provided with snap fasteners cooperating with those on the drapery.
LUCIA Gr. MIDA.
