J. G.'ROSS. .7 Mechanism for Boats and- Shoes.
WITNESS 5 NlTED STATES ATENT' FFIQE.
JOHN G. ROSS, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
JACKING MECHANISM FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,685, dated August 31,. 1880,
Application filed June 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN G. Ross, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Jaeking Boots and Shoes in a Heel-Trimming Machine, of which the followin g is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in jacking boots and shoes, and is an improvement upon my invention, as set forth in Letters Patent issued to me of date April 6, 1880.
In order that others skilled in the art may understand the nature and use of my invention, I will proceed to explain the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of the jack with the boot in position therein for trimming the heel. Fig. 2 is a cross vertical section of Fig. l in line y looking atsaid figure from the toe. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 in line 00 w, removing the top above said line a: m and looking at the section from above.
The letter A represents the former; B, the holder of the former and a part of the jacking device; 0, the boot or shoe; 0, its heel; D, the slide; 0 6, side prongs or clamps attached to and a part of thefor1ner-holder B 0, prong or clamp attached to and a part of the formea holder B c e 0, plates or clamps within the prongs e e and e. e is a setscrew passing through prong 6 against the plate 6. ff are thumb-screws passing through the end of levers or arms against the side plates, 0 c. g g are arms or levers pivoted upon the ends of the side prongs or clamps, e e. g g are pivot-s of said arms 9 g. h h are pins or studs attached to arms g g, passing through the holder B on either side and impinging a wedge-shaped cam within said holder B. I is a screw-spindle operated by a cam. J is a wedge-shaped cam within the holder B, and K is a cam attached to the end of the spindle, and by which the same is operated, and L is a slot in the.
holder. 1
Upon examining Fig. 1 in the accompanying drawings it will be observed that the boot is jacked or clamped ready for its heel to be trimmed. After the heel is trimmed, by reversing the cam K, as shown in Fig. 1, the spindle J will be sprung inwardly, assuming the position seen in Fig. 3. This is accom plished by the pressure of the pins or studs h it against the sides of the wedge-shaped cam J, causing it to spring backward. This action releases the pressure of the arms 9 g, and con- 1 sequently the side plates or clamps, e c, are loosened, and the slide D with boot attached can easily be drawn out. So, when a heel is to be trimmed the boot is lasted and the last attached to the slide, and the slide is then pushed into the groove in the holder until the heel of the boot comes in between the two side clamps and plates to the back clamp and plate, and then the cam K is brought into the position seen in Fig. 3, and the boot is jacked ready to be trimmed.
The jacking portion of the machine for trimming boot-heels is clearly shown by the figures in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 2 shows the position of the prongs or clamps c e and their plates 6 c, the arms 9 g and their pivots g g, the pins or studs h h, and the cross-section of the cam J and formerholder B.
Fig. 3 shows, by a horizontal section of Fig. 1, the lower partof the former-holderB in the line 00 00, the spindle I, which is, in part, a screw passing through the cam J, and the formerholder B, as shown, and also the position of the arms 9 g and the pins h h. The former-holder is slotted where the cam J plays, and when the boot is jacked the cam Kis drawn forward, as seen by the dotted lines, and the arms 9 g are pushed outward in the position of the dotted lines shown.
The invention is new and useful in a heellrimming machine; and
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the holder B, the clamps e e and their clamp-plates e" e and thumb-screws ff, the arms 9 g, pins h h, and
the cam J, substantially as shown, and for the I purpose described.
2. The combination of the arms 9 g, the pins h h, the cam J, the spindle I, and the described mechanism for operating the same,
substantially as shown.
3. The combination of the cam K, the spin- 5 dle I, the cam J, and the described mechanism for operating the same, substantially as shown.
4. The combination of the slide D, the
clamps e 6 and e' and their described devices for jacking a boot, the cam J, the spindle I, 10 and the cam K, substantially as shown, and for thfipurposes described.
