KARL GRASSAU, 0F VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA.
Letters Patent No. 101,456, (lated April 5, 1870.
IMPROVED LASTING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, KARL GRAssAU, of Virginia City, county of Storey, State of Nevada, have invented a'n Improved Boot -and Shoe Lasting Machine; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention and improvements without further inven-` v made' to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
A is a strong arm or bar bent as shown, and fastened to the last through the insole B by nails a a.
The part of the bar 'which rests on the sole, is grooved, so as to receive the sliding end (l of the toe clamp C, and guide it in its movements forward and back.
This clamp is moved by a screw, D, which works through the bar A, and turns in the standard L, having a shoulder to prevent its advance or retreat without moving the standard.
The two clamps E E at the sides of the ball of the foot arel hinged by means of extended arms e to a central nut, F, which is out-side the bar A, and is moved together with the clamps E toand from the sole by a screw, G, operating through the nut F.
The clamps H H, which draw the leather over the instep, are attached to the bar A in .a manner similar to the clamps E by arms f.
Through the arms c and f are screws I and J, with nuts which serve to bling the clamps nearer together, and so stretch the leather as much as desired.
The clamps are all constructed with a movable and a fixed jaw, the fixed jaw being a part ofthe bars d, o, and f respectively, and a screw-bolt through these and the movable jaws serves to operate the latter.
The inner surfaces of the jaws are roughened, so that they will hold the leather rmly.
The operation of my machine is as follows:
The insole is placed uponthe last, and the bar A is fastened to the last by the pins a a. The upper leather is then clamped by the jaw C, and the screw D turned so as to draw it down tight over 'the toe of the last. The leather is then seized by the clamps E E at the sides ofthe ball of the foot, and the screw G is turned so as to draw the leather beyond the edges ofthe sole. This being accomplished, the nut on the screw I is turned and the leather drawn together under the sole. The counter is then drawn down to its place, and the clamps H H adjusted to the leather, and the nut on the screw J moved so as to draw the leather under the sole, when it. is ready to be stitched.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination o f the clamp C, provided with i the standard L, with the screw D and bar A, arranged to operate substantially as described.
2. Iu combination with the clamps E, the bar A, so constructed as to form a point of' support for the screw G, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal. v
Witnesses: KARL GRASSAU. [L. s.]
