I WRECKING BAR WITH LADDER HOOK Filed March 16, 1942 MC. Sore/130m,
Patented Apr. 13, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRECKING BAR WITH LADDER HOOK Nels C. Sorenson, Findlay, Ohio Application March 16, 1942, Serial No. 434,956
1 Claim.
This invention relates to wrecking bars and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.
It is the cardinal object of the invention to provide a wrecking bar having clamp means whereby the bar may be. secured to rungs of a ladder for supporting the ladder in proper and secure position when in use.
It is also an object of the invention to provide clamp means which are adjustable longitudinally of the wrecking bar so as to accommodate rungs of various constructions of ladders, where spacing of the rungs may not be uniform.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a ladder having my construction of wrecking bar attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the ladder showing my device in use.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view through the wrecking bar illustrating the mounting of the clamp means.
Figure 4 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevation, illustrating a further and important use of the invention.
There is illustrated a conventional wrecking bar ill embodying a hook portion ll terminating in a claw l2 as is customary. Upon the shank portion 53 at the base of the hook H a flattened portion i4 is formed, suitable for driving nails, spikes and the like. A claw member l5 completes the bar structure.
Intermediate the length of the shank IS a pair of slots iii are formed, extending longitudinally of the shank for receiving fastening devices, now to be described.
A clamp device ll is employed with each slot I6. and in the present instance is formed from a metal plate of suitable gauge bent at one end in the form of a semi-circular loop l8 of a diameter to admit a rung of a ladder l0 by way of the open side of the loop. The other end of the plat-r: is extended as a flat portion l9, apertured as at it for reception of a bolt 2!, which is headed at 22, and threaded upon the opposite end for receiving a wing nut 23.
In mounting the clamp devices to the wrecking bar, the flat portions l9 are laid fiat upon the bar, the apertures 25] being alined with respective slots l5. A bolt 2! is next inserted through apertures and slots and a wing nut 23 is engaged upon the threaded end thereof to hold the clamp devices upon the bar. Obviously, the loop portion I8 may be so disposed as to be suspended from a rung of the ladder, as in Figures 1 and 2, or the loop portions may be reversed as in Figures 3 and 4. It will be apparent that the wrecking bar may be employed as such while the clamps are attached, or if desired, the clamps may be quickly removed.
The particular use to which the device may be employed is to secure a ladder at its upper end, from a building, such as in Fig. 2, or over the ridge of a roof as shown in Fig, 5, disposing the hook portion ll over a guttering. In applying the wrecking bar to a ladder, the clamp devices H are loosened to such extent as to admit a rung of the ladder within respective loops IS. The wing nuts 23 are then screwed home so as to draw the flat portions l9 snug against the shank I3 when the rungs will be firmly gripped. The wrecking bar thus becomes a rigid part of the ladder, which may be manipulated in a manner to cause the hook to engage a suitable rigid member for support of the ladder.
It may happen that the rungs of various ladder constructions will vary as to the distances of spacing but this may be accommodated by reason of the elongated slots l6, permitting the clamps to be moved longitudinally of the bar.
While I have specifically shown and described a preferred construction, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications in constructions as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A new article of manufacture consisting of a wrecking bar having a hook end and a shank portion of substantial diameter terminating in a claw portion having a curvature reverse to that of the hooked end, the shank being of a length to extend beyond a plurality of rungs of a ladder and presenting the curved portion of the claw portion against the lowermost rung, said shank having a pair of slots extending longitudinally thereof and spaced inwardly of the claw portion, a clamp member cooperable with each slot, each clamp comprising a fiat portion having an aperture aligned with a respective slot and a loop portion adapted to partly encircle a rung of a ladder, a bolt extended through the aligned aperture and slot, and a nut on the bolt for drawing the flat portion and the loop in the direction of the shank and maintaining the claw portion firmly against the said rung of the ladder.
NELS C. SORENSON.
