Description
E,G0ODB. `Tomb Stone.
No. 231,-663. Patented Aug. 31,1880.
mmmwv NESSES '.4A PETERS, llOTO-l 'NDGRAFH WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD GOODE, OF ARCHER, FLORIDA.
TO M BSTONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,663, dated August 31, 1880,
Application fil ed October 4,1879.
` Archer, in the county of Alachua and State of Florida. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave-Stones and Tombstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operationof the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings isa representation of a vertical sect-ion of my device, showing the same applied to a grave; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
The nature of my present invention relates to the formation of tombstones, the object bcing to form a strong and durable tombstone over a grave, whereby the work may be rea-dily done-and the stone adapted to the size of the grave in a simple and economical manner, as fully set forth in the following' description, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Heretofore in the manufacture of artificial stonea metallic frame-work, linked or arranged so as to strengthen the structure, has been employed. Availing myself of this fact of using bars of iron for strengthening the material, I am enabled to erectastrong and durable coveror tablet over a grave.
M111 carrying out my invention I lirst form a foundation ofstone', A, around the grave-mound B. This mound .l then raise and pack until it is of the required size and conformation of the stone which it is desired to form. Around this stone I then place a wooden casing, C, leaving a space between the same and the mound. Next I place in said space a number `tit-y of the cement and sand to form a cover.
In Fig. 2, a designates the sides, and b the top or cover, of a stone thus formed. Finally I coat the whole with lime-Wash.
By the above method the mound and casing form a mold whereby the tombstone is molded directly over the grave, and the bars D form laisort `of cage held together by the cement. These bars are entirely concealed, and prevent the cracking of the stone.
Vhat I claim is- The method of erecting a cover or tablet over a grave, the saine consisting in forming a foundation of stone around the grave-mound, then placing a wooden casing around the stone foundation, with an interposed space between the same and the mound, and arrangingin said space a number of iron bars or rods, then packing in the space and around the bars Portland cement and sand until the same is nearly to the top of the mound and casing, then placing iron bars or rods across the top of the mound, and finally packing in a sufficient quantit-y of the sand and cement to form the cover, substantially as described.
In testimony that l claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD GOODE.
