Si ES "TN QFFIQ PRESELECTOR Edward J. Mastney, Berwyn, Ill., assigner to Qak Mfg. Co., Chicago, lll., a corporation of Illinois 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a preselector and particularly to an improvement thereon for adjusting the same. The reselector proper is generally of the type shown in my Patent 2,161,183, granted-June 6, 1939.
r:Che invention will be described with reference to the drawing wherein Figure 1 shows an elevation partly in section of the pre-selecting mechanism. Figure 2 is a side view of a pre-selector unit in a normal position. Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of one end of the preselector unit and specifically showing the invention herein claimed'. Figure 4 is an exploded view of the manual adjustment of the preselector unit.
A base I@ has mounted thereon a gang condenser frame it supporting stator plates i2. Rotatively mounted on frame i I is a condenser lshaft 13 carrying rotor plates Se cooperatively associated with the stator plates. rIhis gang condenser is an example of a device which is to be turned to predetermined positions. The mechanism for doing this is mounted upon base I!) and includes a pair of supporting plates i5 and i6 bolted to base Ill.
Rotatively mounted in plates I5 and i6 is a shaft il'. One end of shaft E1 is rotatively coupled to condenser shaft I 3 by a suitable universal joint means i3. Shaft E1 is provided with sleeves I9 and 23, both alike. As clearly shown, these sleeves have shoulder portions 2| and 2L bearing on the inside faces of plates I5 and i6 and in effect constituting end thrust sleeves. The shoulder ends of these sleeves are preferably so fabricated as to provide a small annular clearance 23 around shaft I1.
Between sleeves i9 and 20 are uve identical control units 25-29 inclusive. Referring to unit 29, as an example, there is provided a center washer 3i) snugly tting shaft I1. As shown in the corresponding washer of unit 28, the center washer is provided with a radially extending finger 3l'. On opposite sides of center washer 60 are sleeves 32 and 33 having the same general construction as sleeves I9 and 2G. Thus sleeve 32 has a cylindrical portion 35 extending to a shoulder 36 and then an enlarged cylindrical portion 31. Enlarged cylindrical portion 31 is so shaped on the interior that an annular region 38 is provided around shaft I1.
Sleeve 33 is the image of sleeve 32 and is provided with the same details. Rotatively mounted on reduced cylindrical portion is a washer 4G having a finger similar to nger LII on washer 40 of unit 28. As clearly shown in unit 28, finger 4I' is bent over to lie in the path of travel of nnger 3i' of the center washer. Beyond this washer t@ is a gear e2 provided with a finger 33 bent over to lie in the path of travel of nger ll of the adjacent washer. Sleeve 33 is similarly provided with a washer and gear.
Each unit is controlled by a pair of offset racks 5t and 5I (see unit 2S) engaging the gears 42 and 42 of each unit and disposed on opposite sides of shaft I1. These two racks are carried by a lever 52. It is clear that upon downward movement of the two racks, the two gears of a unit will be urged in opposite directions. Assuming center washer 36 is xed relative to shaft I1, then each unit will tend to cause shaft I 1 to wave l to a predetermined position upon downward movement of the racks. This is more fully explained in the patent referred to herein.
In order to guide each lever and rack means, a top plate 55 is carried by side plates I5 and l@ as by ears 56. Plate 55 is slotted to journal lever 52. Additional strengthening members 51 and 58 extend between side plates l5 and I6 to provide a rigid structure. Each lever 52 may have a button 63 tted thereon.
As is evident, the operation of the device requires that each center washer 3B of a unit be dxed relative to shaft I1. In addition, to preselect the stopping point for each unit, requires that each `center washer be readily adjustable with reference to shaft I1. This is provided in the following manner.
Between sleeve 20 and unit 29 are two large washers 6I and 62 loose on shaft I1. These two washers are spread by a spring washer 63 bent so that this spring washer may be compressed by forcing the two large washers together. Immediately beyond sleeve 2i), portion 61 0f shaft l1 is mutilated to provide two ats 65 and 66.
Portion 61 of the shaft, is adapted to accommodate the manual adjusting means. As clearly evident in Figure 4, this adjusting means oomprises a generally L shaped member 1I) whose body portion 1I is provided with an aperture 12. This aperture consists o-f two straight sides and two curved sides and has the same outline as the shaft with the flats. Since the mutilated portion of the shaft extends to the very end, it is evident that body 1I may be moved over the shaft and be rotatably locked thereto although movable lengthwise along the shaft. L shaped member 10 has a head portion 13 carrying a well 14. Head portion 13 is apertured at 15 so that well 'I4 provides a through aperture beyond head portion 13.
A cam block 16 has a pair of legs 11 and 18 spaced just far enough apart to straddle the shaft at the portion where fats 55 and B5 are. Thus, cam blocks 16 may be readily disposed over the shaft and, like L shaped member 1D, is rotatably locked to the shaft although freely movable along the same. Cam block 'IS has a flat face 'I9 normally adjacent body portion 'H of member 10. On the other side, cam block 'E5 has an irregular outline. Thus, the upper portion of this side of the block has a substantially straight plane face 80. The bottom portion of this face of the lblock is cut away to provide a generally triangular outline 8| as seen from the side of the block. This outline provides two sloping cam faces 82 and 83 along the front portions of legs 'Il and 18.
Cooperating with cam block i6 is another cam block 85 having a round aperture 86 therethrough and having a fiat rear face 81. The front face of cam block 85 has an upper plane face 88 adapted to cooperate with face S0 of cam block 16 and also has a protruding cam section 89 adapted to cooperate with the correspondingly shaped portion of cam block '58. While aperture 86 of cam block 85 is shown as round, it may be shaped similarly to aperture 12 to rotatably lock cam block 85 to the shaft. However this is unnecessary and would require extreme accuracy in aligning the cooperating camblocks. It is preferred to have aperture 35 round and large enough so that this second cam block may slip over the shaft and be turned to any position. j
Cooperating with the first cam block 76 is an adjusting bolt 9G having a slotted head 9| and a collar 92. Bolt 9E is adapted to cooperate with the threaded aperture 98 extending through the top portion of cam block 76, permitting bolt 98 to be adjusted up and down within the space between legs 'Il and 18.
The entire adjusting means is maintained in position on the shaft as shown in Figures 1 and 3 between sleeve 20 and knob 95 threaded or locked on the shaft at the end of portion El. It is preferred to have enough space between sleeve 28 and knob 95 so that the portions of the unit as shown in exploded form in Figure 4 have some play on the shaft. Bolt 90 is disposed below top portion 'I3 of member 'l0 and the various parts are so proportioned that collar 92 engages top portion 13 while permitting head 9| of the bolt to extend up inside of well 14. Thus as bolt 90 is turned in one direction it tends to pull cam block 16 upwardly as seen in Figure 3. The reaction of cam block 'I5 on second cam block 85 results in the inclined faces 82 and 83 riding on protruding portion 89 and results in a cam action which tends to separate the two cam blocks. The net result is that by turning bolt 90 in a direction tending to move it down, the cam blocks are spread. Since the second cam block 85 is free to move along the shaft, it reacts against sleeve 20 and forces all the preselecting units tightly against each other. Thus, the various sleeves are tightly clamped and the units are maintained in predetermined adjusted position.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, a shaft, means normally rotatable with respect to said shaft but adapted to be clamped in adjusted position by side thrust, an adjusting member threaded on said shaft and engaging said normally rotatable means to exert side thrust thereon, said adjusting member having a cam face thereon, a second adjusting member having a cam face cooperating with said first cam face, said second adjusting member being disposed on said shaft and having a limited degree of movement transverse to said shaft, a bolt threadedly engaging said second member and extending transversely of said shaft, and a third member disposed on said shaft and having a part engaging said bolt, said third member permitting said bolt to turn and adjust the transverse position of said second member whereby cooperating cam surfaces adjust the transverse dimension of the device.
