UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
T'OMMASO DONATO, OF NEW YQR-K, N.
DEVICE FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,547, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed March 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, TOMMASO DONATO, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Devices for 0onverting Motion, of which the following is a specification.
vThe object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mechanism for converting reciprocating into rotary motion.
The invention consists in a rocking lever having one or two segmental racks attached thereto, which act upon sliding racks having a connecting-rod of a crank pivoted between them, whereby the reciprocating motion of the rocking lever is converted into rotary motion, and the power is greatly augmented by the difference in the leverage of the rocking lever and the segmental racks, and is then transmitted to drivingwheels by intermediate geared wheels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial crosssectional elevation of the same on the line was,
* Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A lever, A, is attached to a shaft, B, pivoted between the two sides of a frame. 0, so that the said lever A can be rocked to and fro by means of a connecting-rod, D, attached to the lower end of the lever A. One or more segmental racks, E, the radius of which is much less than the length of the rocking lever A, are rigidly attached to the shaft B, so that they rock with the lever A and engage with the teeth of one or more racks, F, fastened to the top of a frame, Gr, sliding on a track, H, on the bottom of the frame 0. A connecting-rod,
I, is pivoted in a recess in the sliding frame G and acts upon a crank, J, of a shaft, K, journaled in the sides of the frame O. Acogwheel, L, is mounted on' the shaft K and engages with a smaller cog-wheel, M, mounted on a shaft, N, journaled in the sides of the frame 0, and having a fly-wheel, P, attached to one or both ends. The cog-wheel L of the shaft K also engages with a smaller cog-wheel, O, mounted on a shaft, Q, journaled in the sides of the frame 0 C. To the ends of this (Model) shaft Q the driving-wheels It It or pulleys S S, for transmitting the motion by means of belts, are attached.
If the mechanism is to be used on a wagon, steam road-wagon, or like vehicle, one end of the same is supported on the driving-wheels R It, and the other end on a pair of independent, loose wheels T T.
A beveled geared wheel, U, is mounted on the shaftQ and en gages with a beveled geared wheel, V, mounted on one end of a shaft, W, on the other end of which a propeller-screw, Y, is mounted.
The operationis as follows: The power is applied to the rod D, giving the same a reciprocating motion, which is transmitted to the sliding frame G by the rocking lever A and the segmental and horizontal racks E and F but as the rocking lever A is much longer than the radius of the segmental rack E, the power is increased in proportion to the difference in length of the lever A and the radius of the segmental rack E. The reciprocating motion of the sliding frame G is converted into a rotary motion by the crank J and the connecting-rod I. The motion and power are transmitted to the shaft N by the cog-wheels L and M and are equalized by the fly-wheels P P. The motion is also transmitted to the shaft Q by the cog-wheels L and O.
Driving-wheels R can be fastened to the shaft Q in case the mechanism is to be used to drix e a wagon or other vehicle; or pulleys S can be fastened to the shaft in case the mechanism is to be used to drive other machinery. If it is to be used to propel a ship by means of a screw, Y, the screw-shaft W is operated from the shaft Q by means of intermediate beveled geared wheels U and V.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A mechanism for converting motion and augmenting power, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a rocking lever and segmental racks attached thereto, of sliding racks upon which the segmental racks act, of a connecting-rod pivoted between the sliding racks, and of a crank and geared wheels for transmitting the motion, as set forth.
2. In a mechanism for converting motion and augmenting power, the combination, with the rocking lever A, of segmental racks E, the straight racks F, and the sliding frame (l, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a mechanism for converting motion and augmenting power, the combination, with the rocking lever A, of the segmetal racks E, the straight racks F, the sliding frame G, connecting-rod I, crank J, geared wheels L and M, and the fiy-wheels P, substantially as here in shown and described, aml for the purpose set forth.
4. In a mechanism for converting motion and augmenting power, the combination, with the rocking lever A, of the segmental racks E, the straight racks F, the sliding frame G, eon- TOMMASO DONATO.
