Yet another object of this invention'is to pro-' vide in. a device of the character described, a case hinged to the backing plate and forming therewith a container for any suitable articles. eraser element is clamped to the backing member, chalk may be inserted in the container-to form a complete blackboard eraser and chalk container unit, and

permitting the eraser element to be either replaced or removed for cleaning purposes.

A still further object of this invention is to providea strong, rugged, durable and handy article of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and wlthal practical. and efficient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of partswhich will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described; and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, I0 designates a combination clamp holder for flexible element and container embodying the invention. The same comprises a backing member or base ll, having a bottom wall l2 of substantially rectangular shape, vertical side walls i3 and upwardly and inwardly inclined end walls It. The upper corners l5 of the side walls I3 are bent overagainst the outer surfaces of the inclined end walls l4.

Contacting the underside of the bottom wall [2 of base II is the intermediate portion 20 of a flexible element 2|, the width whereof is preferably somewhat less than the width of said bottom wall H. The outer ends 22 of element 2| are folded over the outer surfaces of the end walls It and against the inner surfaces thereof, and contact the upper surface of bottom wall l2, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The folded over portions. 22 are clamped tothe base I i by a combination handle and clamp member 25. The same comprises a tubular wooden handle member 26-formed with a through opening 21. Attached to each end of the tubular handle 26 is a clamp element 30 madeof a single piece of wire. Each member 30 comprises a pair of contacting wire portions 3| inserted into one end opening 21. Extending from the wire portions 3| are substantially contacting, upwardly extending off-set or humped portions 32. Extending downwardly from the wire portions 32 are wire portions 33. Extending from the wire portions 33 are downwardly and outwardly extending wire portions 34, from which there extend inwardly curved wire portions 35 interconnected by a straight horizontal wire portion 36. The normal distance between the wire p0rtions36 of members 30 is preferably somewhat greater than the distance between the end walls M of base H. To clamp the flexible element 2| to the base H, portion 36 of one clamp'element 30 is placed between the portion of said flexible element which contacts the inner surface of end wall l4 and the which contacts the inner surface 'of bottom wall IZJ.v The other clamp element 30js then' pressed toward the first element until the portion 36 thereof can enter into the base and press against the portion of the flexible element which contacts the i ersurface of the bottom wall at the opposite end of the base. The handle is then attached to the base and also clamps the portion thereof of the through flexible element to the base. The flexible element 2! may be in the form of sand-paper, emery paper, polishing cloth, blackboard eraser material, or any other suitable material for polishing, brushing, rubbing or erasing.

Mounted within the base II is a case 40 adapted to contain chalk 4| or any other material which is necessary in conjunction with the use of the device. Thus, when the flexible element is in the form of a polishing cloth, the case 40 may contain polishing material.

The case 40 comprises a top wall 4!, side walls 42 and end walls 43, and is open at the bottom. The width of the case 40 is somewhat less than the width of the base, so that said case fits between the side walls !3 of the base. Said side walls are formed with openings 50, and extending from one end wall 43 of the. case are projections 5! extending into said openings to hinge the case to the base. It will be noted that the openings 50 are somewhat elongated to permit longitudinal movement of the case 40 relative v to the base.

Said side walls l3 are also formed with L- shaped bayonet slots 53, and extending from the other end wall of the case are projections 54 adapted to engage within the bayonet slots to lock the case in closed position.

In Fig. 7 the case 40 is shown in open position.

To close said'case, the same may be swung downwardly, the projections 54 entering the slots 53. The case may then be moved to the right to lock the case against accidentally opening.

As shown in Fig. 9, the handle may be provided with arms 3%, similar to arms 30, with the exception that the humped portions 32 are eliminated.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this inven set forth, it is to be understood that all matter' herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to securev by Letters Patent:

1. An article of the character described comprising a base having a bottom wall, upwardly extending side walls and upwardly and inwardly inclined end walls, a flexible element having a portion contacting the underside of said bottom wall, and end portions folded over the end walls and against the inner surfaces of the end walls and bottom wall, a handle, and resilient members attached to the ends of the handle and having portions adapted to press the folded over portions of said flexible element against said inner surfaces of said end walls and bottom wall, the upper corners of said side walls being bent over against the outer surfaces of said end walls.

2. An article of the character described comprising a base having a bottom wall, upwardly extending side walls and upwardly extending end walls, said side walls being formed with aligned slots, a case on said base and between the side walls thereof, said case being open at its bottom end, and having projections extending through said slots, said side walls being formed with bayonet slots, and projections on said case to engage within said bayonet slots.
