BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,518, dated August 24, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT ALBERTsoN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey. have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, (Gase 1),) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class ot' bottle-Stoppers which are connected with the bottle outside of the mouth ot' 1o the same.
The invention consists in combining a yielding bottle-stopper having metal cap and transverse pivots with the mouth of the bottle by upright posts rigidly secured to the neck-band of the bottle, the upper ends ot' which posts are provided with angular or bentslots, through which the said pivots are passed, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l o represents a top view ot a bottle provided with the im proved stopper 5 Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a vertical cross-section taken on line 7c lc ot' Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, D represents a bottle-stopper having acup-shaped body and a liange, d, and an upright projection inclosed in a metal cap or case, m. The cup-shaped lower portion is open at the lower end.
3o To opposite sides of the head of the bottle are applied upright posts G G, the lower ends whereof are fastened to the collar n, that is placed around the neck of the bottle. The upper parts of the posts G may be strengthened by a band, o, bent in against the head of the bottle on both sides ofthe posts, and secured to the latter. The upper ends of the posts G project some distance above the mouth of the bottle, and are provided with wings or projections p p, in each ol' which is a curved slot hav'- ing two parts, q and s, at angles to each other.
Through the metal cap or case m a diametrical pin, t, is passed horizontally, and the projecting ends of said pin are passed through theslots g gin the projections p p, and provided With heads to prevent the pins from slipping out and the stopper from losing its pivotal connection with the posts G G.
To open thebottle it is necessary to press against the side of the ymetal cap m, by which 5o movement the ends of the pin t are forced out of the parts s to the parts q of the slots, thereby raising the stopper partly out of the bottle, and finally turning it on its side at about right angles to the head of the bottle, as indicated 5 5 by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
To close the bottle the stopper is pushed in a direction opposite to that just described until the ange d comes incontact with the rim of the bottle and arrests the further lateral 6o movement ot' the stopper and causes it to turn over and enter the mouth of the bottle and close it.
lt will be seen that the only connection between the elastic stopper and the supportingcollar is one single pivotal connection, the pivot passing through angular slots in the wings ofthe posts.
By making the stopper D cup-shaped and placing it in the mouth of the bottle in an in- 7o verted position a very tight connection is made between the stopper and the mouth ot' the bottle, and as the stopper is very elastic, in ease an aerated liquid is placed in the bottle the pressure will expand the sides of the stopper and press them closely and tight-ly against the sides of the mouth.
I claim- The posts G G, fixed rigidly to the neckband ot' the bottle and provided with the 8o slotted wingsp at the upper ends, in combination with a lieXible bottle-stopper having metal cap m and transverse pivots t, so that said pins travel in the slots ofthe immovable win gs p in opening and closing the stopper, substantially as herein shown and described.
