Description

March 30, 1943- J. H. i-IOMRIGHOUS 0 SPRAYING DEVICE Filed April 13, 19:59
Fatented Mar. 30, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to improvements in spraying devices for paint, insecticides 'or the like, and more particularly to a portable spraying device adaptable for varying the angle at which the spray may be directed.
One of the principal objects of this invention is the provision of a spraying device that permits quick adjustment for changing the angle of the spray.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an arrangement for rotating the air nozzle around the fluid nozzle so that the under side of the leaves of shrubbery may be sprayed as well as the top side.
Spraying devices have been devised for spraying through various angles by pre-adjusting the nozzle to some fixed position. In my invention I provide a spraying device that may be adjusted instantly by a hand lever to direct the spray in various directions.
These and other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following detailed description, references being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view partially in section of a spraying device embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a detailed view of the rotating nozzle shown in Figure 1.
In the drawing, i represents a supply tanl; container or receptacle, provided with an internal threaded cover 2, near one edge and extending through the cover is a suction tube 3 having the upper end bent over at a right angle, shown better in Figure 2, to provide a bearing for the member 4, which member has the rotating air discharge nozzle 5, secured thereto. The rotating member 4 is controlled through the ac tion of spring 6, cable I, and the element or hand lever B on the pump handle 10. The air nozzle 5 is maintained at a fixed distance from the liquid tube nozzle or the upper end of suction tube 3 regardless of the rotation of the air discharge nozzle, and the suction in the tube 3 is independent of the rotation of nozzle 5. The nozzle 5, is shown connected by a flexible hose 9, to the hand operated air pump l0, securely fastened to the cover 2. The air pump or apparatus 10, shown only in part, has a plunger H, which is controlled by the plunger rod I2. It is to be understood that the pump ill, may be provided with a valve and air chamber to give a continuous supply of air at the nozzle 5.
With reference to Figure 2, the air discharge nozzle 5 secured to the pivoted member or link 4 is in its lowest position and the spray would be directed upward by the air forced over the end of the liquid or suction tube 3.
To operate the spraying device shown in Figures 1 and 2, the air is compressed in the pump l0 which is connected by the flexible hose 9 to the air discharge nozzle 5 to force air out through the nozzle 5, and over the liquid tube nozzle on the end of tube 3, to spray the contents of the receptacle at various angles by the rotation of the nozzle 5 through the action of the hand lever B.
I do not intend that the present invention shall be restricted to the arrangement of parts, or to the particular form as herein set forth, but contemplate all modifications and changes therein within the terms of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a spraying device, a liquid receptacle, a suction tube extending into said receptacle provided with a liquid tube nozzle, an air discharge nozzle pivoted to rotate about the said liquid tube nozzle and at a fixed distance from the end of the said liquid tube nozzle with the discharged air directed across said tube nozzle to produce a spray in a direction determined by the position of the air discharge nozzle, air compressing apparatus secured to said receptacle having a flexible hose communicating with the said air discharge nozzle, and means including a lever mounted on said apparatus arranged to rotate the said air discharge nozzle relative to the said liquid tube nozzle to vary the direction of discharge from the said nozzle.
2. In a spraying device, a liquid receptacle, a suction tube extending into said receptacle provided with a liquid tube nozzle, said tube being bent at its upper end to form a bearing surface, an air discharge nozzle pivoted on the bearing surface of the said tube for maintaining it at a fixed distance from the end of said liquid tube nozzle in any rotated position, and arranged to direct a jet of air across said liquid tube nozzle to produce a spray in a direction determined by the position of the air discharge nozzle, an air pressure pump secured to said receptacle having a flexible hose communicating with the said air discharge nozzle to force air across the said liquid tube nozzle, and means including a lever mounted on said pump for rotating the said air discharge nozzle relative to the said liquid tube nozzle to vary the direction of the discharge from the liquid tube nozzle.
