PICTURE-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,473, dated August 24, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LYOURGUS BRowER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in which Figure l is a view of the back of a picture frame containing my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line y 3 Fig. 1, and showing also in dotted lines a modification of same, particularly described hereinafter.

My invention consists in a picture-frame having a back made to slide in grooves in the sides of the frame, and provided with a springholder liming a spring or springs attached thereto, and arranged to not between the back and the picture, as hereinafter set forth.

A is the picture-frame, which may be made in the ordinary way and of the ordinary form. B is the glass that faces or covers the picture. 0 is the picture, which may be on common paper or card-board, canvas, or other suitable material. D is the back of the frame, which may be of wood or other suitable material, and it slides to its place in grooves in the inner edge of the frame, as shown in -the drawings. E is a spring, made preferably of thin sheet metal, bowed outward between the ends a a. from the part on which the ends bear, or to which they are attached. This spring is attached to the back of a supporting-piece or holder, which may be a card or sheet of any stiff material, between which and the glass is the picture, as shown in full lines in said Fig. 2, the essential thing being to interpose between the back andthe picture a spring, which,

reacting from the back against the picture, shall, press on the part that supports the picture in the front.

if it is not desired to cover the picture with glass the picture may be secured upon a stiff backing, and, with the said backing, rest against the rabbet in the sides and ends of the frame, when the spring described will act to press the picture and backin g firmly againstsaid rab bet.

More than one spring maybe used, if desired, and arranged in any manner between the back and the picture to secure the best results.

The spring may be secured to its support either in the middle, or one may be secured near each edge of the support, leaving the ends free to move, or the reverse-that is, the ends secured to the support, as shown in the drawin \V hen the latter arrangement is adopted the ends may be secured to the support by pins passing through holes that are slotted in one or both ends, or in any other suitable manner.

This frame thus provided with a spring is specially adapted to hold photographic cards.

\Vha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a picture-frame provided with a back made to slide in grooves in the sides of the frame, of the spring-holder having spring or springs attached thereto, and arranged to act between the back and the picture, as and for the purpose set forth.
