wire 12, switch 24, 24a, wire 28a and coil 2| of the relay 28.
Still following the passage of the wheels over the treadle 8 in the direction indicated on the drawing, switch 4, 4A will close and switch 2, 2A will open while switch 3, 3A is still closed.
Closing switch], 4A will provide a circuit energizing relay 58, the circuit being through coil 5I of relay 58, wire 11, switch 32,.32a, wire 13, switch 22, 22a, wires I28 and 15, switch I3, I31),
wire 13 and switch 4, 4A, Energizing relay 58 will close switches 53, 53a; 54, 54a; 55, 55a and '58, 58a, and will open switches 52, 52a; 58, 55a
and 51, 51a. By closing switch 55, 55a, another energizing circuit for relay 58 is'completed, the purpose of which will be hereinafter apparent. This second circuit may be traced from minus power supply, through coil H of said rela wires I1 and 85, switch 84, 84a, wire 88, switch 18, 18a, wires 85 and I2I, switch 55, 55a, wires 13 and 15, switch I3, I32) (the relay I8 being energized) wire 19, through closed switch 4, 4a, to plus power supply. In closing switch 58, 58a another circuit will be completed holding the relay I8 energized through coil II of said relay, the circuit being through switch 58, 58a, wire 83, switch I4, I4a; wire H8 and coil II.
Opening switch 52, 52a will break the previously described circuit holding relay 28 energized through switch 3, 3A. Switch 2, 2A has also been opened by the wheel rolling of! the lane, breaking the circuit through said switch and coil 2| of relay 28. Relay 28 is then de-energlzed. Deenergization of relay 28 will allow switches 23, 23a; 25, 28a and 21, 21a to close, will allow switches 22, 22a; 24, 24a; 25, 25a and 21, 21a to open.
De-energization of relay 28 serves to complete a holding circuit for relay 58 in its energized condition, for the purpose hereinafter appeariiig. The second circuit for relay 58 holds said relay energized while switch 22, 22a opens upon of this invention,
through wire 38 to the positive side of a source v of electrical energy.
The further progression of the wheels over the treadle 8 will open switch 3, 3A de-energizing relay 38. Switches 33, 33a; 38, 36a-and 31, 311: will then close, and switches 32, 32a; 34, 34a;
35, 35a and 31, 31a will then open. Opening of switch 3, 3A will energize the directional forward counter F, th completed circuit being through coil H of counter relay 18, wire I8I,
switch I6, I6a, wires I82 and I83, switch 53, 53a,
wires I3I and I 84, switch 35, 36a, wire I88, and switch 28, 26a. Counter relay 18 will then register one count on the counter F. The actuation of counter F will open switch 19, 18a. and hence break the holding circuit for relay 58 through said switch. It will now be noted that relay 58 was held in energized condition until counter F was actuated irrespective of the condition of the last two treadle switches, 3, a count evenif the wheels pass over the treadle at a great rate of speed. De-energized relay 58 will allow switch 58, 58a to open, opening the circuit of coil II of relay I8, thereby de-energizing relay I8. All th switches of the treadle are then opened and all relays are de-energized.
The operation of the circuit a described will be similar were all the steps in the operation 0, the circuit taken in the reverse order. The closing of switches in the sequence 4, 4A; 4, 4A and 3, 3A; 3, 3A and 2, 2A; 2, 2A and I, IA; and I, IA, will operate the backward counter R.
It will now be understood, from the operation that the closure of the switches in the order of I, IA and 2, 2A or 4, 4A and 3,3A
'will determine the directional counter to be acthe backward counter R is locked out to prevent count on the wrong counter. To actuatecounter R, relay 48 must be energized. But by enersizing relays I8 and 28 before closing switch 4, 4A, relay 48 cannot be energized because by energizing relay I8, switch I3, by energizing relay 28, switch 23, 23a is opened. Thus, the two circuits for energizing relay 48 through switches I3, I3a and 23, 23a are thereby opened. Even if the wheel rolls on contact 2, 2A. counter R will nevertheless remain locked out for the following reasons; The closing of treadle switch 4, 4A has completed the circuit through the relay 58. The closing of the circuit through the relay 58 has opened one of the circuits through the relay 28. The opening of the other circuit through the relay 28 by the wheel rolling oil contact 2A asit proceeds from left to right on the treadle de-energizes said relay allowing However. the energize.-

tion if any one of the switches is shorted, whether it be the first switch I, IA; or the inner switches 2, IA or I, 3A, or the last switch I, 4A; and to count the axles passing over the treadle even if both of the inner or middle switches I, IA and 3, 3A are shorted, or one or both of the inner or middle switches are shorted, and thereafter one of the outside switches I, IA or I, IA is shorted, or if only the two outside switches are shorted.
To this end, there is further provided a relay III having a coil III connected at one end to the minus power supply. Associated with said relay are switch arms III, III and III. Said switches are normally open but are adapted to be moved into engagement with fixed contacts IIIa, IIIa and, IIIa, respectively, when the relay III is energized. There is further provided a switch arm I'I, controlled by the relay II, normally in engagement with a fixed contact Ila, but adapted to be opened when said relay is energized. There is also provided a switch arm 41, controlled by the relay II, normally in engagement with a fixed'contact Ila, but adapted to be opened when'said relay is energized. Fixed contact "a is connected to switch arm I! by wire 35 and fixed contact IIa. is connected by wire I to the fixed contact IIa. Switch arm I1 is connected by wire III to the fixed contact IIIa and to the coil III. Switch arm III is connected by wire III to the fixed contact IIa. Fixed contact I53a is connected by wire III to the switch arm II. Switch arm III is connected by wire IIIa to the wires III and III and hence to the switch arm 36, and to the fixed contact IIa. Fixed contact IIIa is' connected to the plus power supply. Switch arm III is connected by wire III to wire I and hence to the fixed contact a, I10 and IIa.
Assume, therefore, that switch I, IA of-treadle I has been closed by tampering, or shorted in any manner. By shorting switch I, IA, relay II will be energized and remain energized throughout the'entire operation of the counter. This device will be operated in the same manner as hereinbeiore described, the axle count being registered on the proper directional counter. Relay II will not be deenergized, however, at the end of the counting operation. The wheels of a vehicle rolling over treadle I in the opposite direction than that indicated will actuate switches I, IA and I, IA to de-energize relay II so that counter R is operated in the normal manner as the wheels continue rolling across the treadle. The closing of switches 4, IA and I, IA energizes relays II and II, respectively, to open both circuits for coil II of relay II.
In the event that treadle switch 4, IA is shorted, relay II will remain energized during the counting operation in the same manner as when switch I, IA was shorted and relay II remained energized. Vehicle axles passing over the treadle will likewise register directional counts'on the counters R and F, as described above.
Assuming now that treadle switch I, IA is shorted, the wheels of the first axle passing over the treadle will be registered on either counter F or counter R, depending upon direction of movement, and wheels of axles subsequently passing over the treadle in either direction, will register on the counter which registered the first count after shorting said treadle switch.
Upon shorting of switch I, IA, relay II will be energized in the manner heretofore described. By the action of energized relay II, switch Ila will close completing a circuit through the coil III of relay III. The completed circuit is through the coil III, wire III, switch 41, Ila, wire II, switch II, IIa, wires I and II, switch I1, I10 and wire II. Energizing relay III will close the switches III, IIIa; III, IIIa. and III, IIIa. Another, or holding circuit is then completed to hold relay III energized through the coil III, switch III, "In, wires III, I and II, switch I1, I10 and wire II. Switch II, IIa may then open when actuated by relay II, leaving relay III still energized by the latter circuit.
As the wheels of a vehicle roll over the treadle "ll, in the direction indicated, relay II will be energized. Switch I, IA being shorted, relay II will again be held energized by the circuit through switch II, IIa, wire I, switch II, IIa, wire III and coil II.
The closing of the switches I, Ia and I, Ia by the wheels of a vehicle will again set up the circuits as hereinbefore described energizing relay II. Relay II, being energized due to the shorted condition of switch I, IA, will hold switch II, III! open. The circuit through switches 26, 26a and II, IIa hereinbefore described to actuate the counter relay" is therefore open. Switch III, II, however, is closed due to action of energized relay III and switch II, No is closed due to action of relay II. Counter relay II is then energized by the circuit through coil II, wire III, switch II, IIa, wire III, wire III, switch II, IIa, wire III, wire IIIa, and switch III, II. The operation of counter relay II will open the circuit, holding relay II energized. De-energizing relay II will open switch II, III: thereby de-energizing counter relay 1I.
It will now be understood that relays II, II, II and III remain energized after the first count on counter F. As vehicles continue moving over the treadle in either direction, each time treadle switch I, IA is closed, thesame counter F will register subsequent counts. The provision of switch III, IIIa connected in parallel across switch II, IIa prevents morethan one count each time wheels on an axle pass over the treadle after the first count which establishes the counter to take the counts.
It relay II were permitted to become de-energized during the operation of the counter, as above described, a double count would result on all wheels of axles passing in an opposite direction over the treadle, subsequent to the wheels of the first axle passing over its treadle in said op-' posite direction. Switch III, IIIa, however, prevents de-energization of said relay, as will now be explained.
Assuming that switch III, IIIa is not in the circuit and switch I, IA of the treadle is shorted energizing relay II, the wheels of a vehicle rolling over the treadle in the direction indicated will actuate the counter I". In actuating counter relay II of counter l", relay II would first be energized, and thereafter de-energized by action of counter II. By energizing relay II,
switch II, IIa will open, permitting relay II to be de -energized.
The front wheels of a vehicle rolling over the treadle I in the opposite direction than that indicated, would close switches 4, 4A and I, IA operating the counter F as herein described. In allowing switch I, IA to open, relay II will be deenergized. closing switch II, IIa. Switch I, IA
- still being closed by the wheel, will hold relay II energized at the same time switch II, IIa. is
again closing. Before switch 3, 3a is opened,
switch 52, 52a has closed, completing a circuit to hold relay 30 energized after switch 3, 3a is open. The circuit holding relay 30 energized is through the coil 3I of relay 30, wire 4!, switch 34, 34a, wire 59, switch 52, 52a, wire 12, switch 24, 24a, wire 29, and shorted switch 2, 2A. Re-
switch 52, 52a and closing switch 53, 53a. Closing switch 53, 5311 will energize the counter relay I3. Opening switch 52, 52a will de-energize relay 3|. Relay 50 is then de-energized by action or counter relay II on switch 13, 13a and by the action of relay 30 opening switch 32, 32a. As the rear wheels of the vehicle then roll onto the treadle 3, switch 3, 3a will then be closed. Relay 30 is thereby energized and switch 4, 4A still held closed by the rear wheels, relay 50 once more, the circuit being through switches 4, 4A; I3, Ilb; 22, 22a and 32, 32a. Switch 53, 53a closes and the counter relay II is actuated for the second time for the same axle. By connecting switch I 53, switch 52, 5211, a double count such as described is avoided. Switch I53, Illa is closed during the entire time that switch 2, 2Ais shorted. As
will hereinafter appear, switch I53, I530 will also .remain closed during a shorted condition of switch 3, 3A of the treadle I and for the similar 31b. Relay I53 is then energized wire 33, switch switch 31, 31a.
purpose of preventing a double e. Assume that treadle switch 3, 3A of treadle 3 is now shorted, the wheels 01 the first axle passing over the treadle will register on either counter 1'" or counter R, depending upon the direction of movement, and wheels of axles subsequently passing over the treadle in either direction will register onthe counter which registered the first count ai'ter shorting said treadle switch. Switch 3, 3A being shorted-relay 30 willbe energized closing swiches 32, 32a; 34, 34a; 35, 35a and 31, 316, and opening switches 33, 33a: 33, 35a and 31,

Relay is then tie-energized and remains tie-energized until-the Relay Ilis then deener wheels of a vehicle roll over treadle 9 in either I direction and close the switch 4, 4A.
It will be noted that the shorting of switches 2, 2A or 3, 3A of the treadle 9 will, after the first set of wheels of a vehicle roll over the treadle,
hold the relays I0, 20 and 30, or the relays-40 30 and 20, energized, dependent upon the direclays energized, the circuits set up thereby are the same as though switches 3, 3A; 2, 2A and the above combination of switches is the same as described, counter F being actuated at all bination of switches.
. Ii'switch 2, 2A is first shorted and then switch I, IA, the wheels of a vehicle will actuate the counter F. After the actuation of the counter F, relay 30 will be held energized as hereinbeiore described. The counter F, condition, will be actuated regardless of the di rection the first vehicle passes over the treadle after the shorting condition described. In like 3A and then switch 4, 4A are shorted. Relay 20 will remain energized after the first actuation In the two-switch combinations last mentioned, the respective counters will be actuated regardless of the direction'in which the first axle passes over the treadle 3 shorting switches 2, 2A and 3, 3A-will bring about operating conditions similar to that when .The first axle passing the shorting condition occurs, will determine the passing over the treadle.
If switches I, IA and 4, 4A are shorted, the Q device will still register the axle count on the proper directional I, IA and 4, 4A will energize relays I0 and 45, respeetively.'- The wheels or a vehicle will'then close either switch 2-, 2A orswitch 3, 3A first depending counting operation is completed by counter F;

over the treadie 4, after counter. shorting the switches Ii switch 3, 3A is closed,
, I15 is a normally open switch arm opening switch 36, 36a.
Thus assuming that treadle switch I, IA is first shorted and then the treadle switch 2, 2A, shorting switch I, IA will energize relay I0, opening switch I1, I1a; shorting switch 2, 2A will energize relay 20 opening switch 26, 26a. Switch I1, l1a being open, the shorting of treadle switch 2, 2A will not energize relay I50 as previously described. Relay 20, in holding switch 26, 26a open, will prevent the actuation of the counter F, as one of the energizing circuits for the counter relay will remain open. The other circuit for energizing counter relay 10 is through the switch I54, I54a. controlled by relay I50. Relay I50 not being energized, will allow switch I54, I54a to remain open, again preventing counter relay 10 from functioning. A count therefore cannot be made.
If switch I, IA is first shorted and then switch 3, 3A, counter relay 10 will again be prevented from functioning. The action of switch I, IA will again energize relay I0, opening switch I1, I1a. Shorting switch 3, 3A will energize relay 00, Relay I50 will not be energized due to open switch :I1, I11: and counter relay 10 will not be energized due to the open switches 36, 36a and I54, I54a. Relay 30, held energized by shorting of switch 0, 3A will hold relay 20 in an energized condition even after switch 2, 2A is allowed to open. Holding relay 20 energized would be analagous to shorting oi switch 2, 2A. shorting switch I, IA first, and then switches 2, 2A and 0, 2A, will also prevent counter relay 10 from functioning.
In like manner counter relay 80 will not function when switch 4, 4A is first shorted and then either or both of the switches 0, 3A or 2, 2A of treadle 9 are shorted.
Means is provided, however, to produce a signal, such as a light, when one or the other of the outside treadle switches is first closed, and one or both of the middle switches are then shorted for more than a predetermined period, whereby to give notice that the system is not operative to count passage of axles of vehicles over the treadle, said signal means being so arranged as to stop operation when the closed middle treadle switch or switches, or the closed outside switch, is again opened so that the warning signal stops operating so that the system is again in condition to count vehicle axles. Means is also provided to make a printed record of the time when the middle switch or switches have been closed for longer than a predetermined period after shorting one o! the outside switches, and thus rendering the system inoperative to record passage of axles of vehicles over the treadle, and to make a second printed record or the time when the closed middle switch or switches, or the closed outside switch opens to render the system again operative to count axles of vehicles passing over the treadle.
To this end, there is provided a pair of relays I and I10. Relay I15 has a coil I16 connected at one end to a plus power supply. Relay I10 is provided with a coil "I connected at one end to a plus power supply. Associated with the relay I11 adapted to be moved into engagement with a fixed contact I11a when relay I15 is energized. Associated with the relay I10 are switch arms I10, I14 and I12. Switch arms I13 and I14 are normally open but are adapted to be moved into engagement with fixed contacts I13a, I14a, respectively, when relay I10 is energized. Switch arm I12 is normally in engagement with a fixed contact "211 and is adapted to be moved by the relay I10 out of engagement with said fixed contact and into engagement with a fixed contact I12b.
There is further provided a time delay relay 60 having a coil 6I connected at one end to a minus power supply. Said time delay relay controls switch arms I6I and I62. Switch arm I6I is normally open but is adapted to be moved into engagement with a fixed contact I6Ia when the time delay relay 60 is energized. Switch arm I62 is normally in engagement with a fixed contact I621) and is adapted to be moved out of engagement with respect thereto, and into engagement with a fixed contact I62a. The switch arm I6I is connected by wire I63 with signal lights or other signals I64, connected to the minus power supply. The relay I60 has furthermore associated therewith, a switch arm I66 normally in engagement with a fixed contact I56a and adapted to be opened when said relay is energized.
There is further provided a time stamp P having a printing solenoid I00 provided with a coil IOI connected at one end to a plus power supply. The solenoid I00 controls a printing platen I10 connected to a switch arm I02. When the printing plate is in normal position, the switch arm I02 contacts the fixed contact I02b. When the platen I1! is moved to a printing position, the switch arm I02 moves out of engagement with the fixed contact I02b and into engagement with a fixed contact I02a.
Switch arm I56 is connected by wire III to wire 20 and hence to the switch arms I0 and 40. Fixed contact I56a is connected by wire I34 to the coil 6| oi the relay 60. Fixed contact I6Ia is connected to a plus power supply. Fixed contact I62a is connected by wire I66 to fixed contact I12a and by wire I66 to switch arm I10, and by wire I60 to switch arm I02. Switch arm I62 is connected to minus power supply. Fixed contact I621) is connected by wire I60 to fixed contact I12b. Switch arm I12 is connected by wire I00 to coil I16 of relay I15. Fixed contact I10a is connected by wire I04 to the coil HI and by wire I61 to fixed contact I02a. Fixed contact I14a is connected to minus power supply. Switch arm I14 is connected by wire I60 to the fixed contact I02b. Switch arm I11 is connected by wire I10 to coil III. Fixed contact I11a is connected to minus power supply.
The platen I19 is adapted to push paper and printing ribbon against date and time wheels I03, as in the usual time stamp.
The operation of the signal and printing means, when an outside treadle switch is first shorted and one or both of the middle treadle switches are then shorted, will now be described.
Under ordinary operating conditions, delayed time relay 00 will not be energized long enough to operate, nor will the delayed time relay 60 be energized if either or both switches 2, 2A and 3, 3A are first shorted. shorting either of these two switches will energize relay I50, thereby opening switch I66, I66a.
When switch I, IA and then switch 2, 2A are shorted, relay 60 will be energized by the circuit through coil 6I, wire I04, switch I56, I56a, wires III and 20, switch I0, I0a, wires 0, 20 and I24, switch 21, 21a, and wire 00. Should the delayed time relay 60 be energized for a longer period than the predetermined time set, switches I6I, I6Ia and I62, I62a will be closed, and switch I62, I621: allowed to open.
In closing switch I6I, I6Ia the signal I64 is actuated, the circuit being through the wire I63 and signal I64. Switch I02, I62a in closing will actuate the printing solenoid I80 causing a record to be made of the time of such shorted condition. Relay I15 is energized by the circuit through the coil I16, wire I83, switch I12, I12a, wire I66 and switch I62, 521;. Relay I15 will close switch I11, I11a energizing the printing solenoid I80, the circuit being through wire I18 and coil I6I. The platen I19 will then be raised and contact the time and date wheels I83, paper and a printing ribbon being interposed, recording the time of such operation. I
Platen I19 in its printing position will close switch I82, I82a and open switch I82, I82b. Relay I10 will then be energized by the circuit through coil I1I, wires I84 and I61, switch I82, I82a, wires I69, I65 and I66, and switch I62, I620. Energized relay I10 will close switch I13, I13a, closing another circuit through coil "I to hold relay I10 energized when switch I82, I82a opens, and before switch I 82, I821) closes. The completed circuit is through the coil I1 I, wire I84, switch I13, I13a, wires I65 and I68, and switch I82, I62a.
Energizing relay I10 will open switch I12, HM and close switches I12, I12b and I14, I14a. Opening switch I12, I12a will open the circuit energizing relay I15. Relay I15 de-energized, switch I11, I 11a opens de-energizing the printing solenoid I80. Platen I19 will then return to its initial position opening switch I82, I82a and closing switch I82, I82b. Switch I82, I82b completes a circuit for holding relay I10 energized, the circuit being through the coil I1I, wire I80, switch I13, I13a, wire I69, switch I82, I82b, wire I88 and switch I14, I14a.
Relay I10 will then remain energized until delayed time relay 60 is de-energized. Visual signal I64 will also remain operated until the said relay is deenergized.
The operation of the printer to record the time when the shorting clears will now be described.
Assum that the shorted condition of switch 2, 2A is cleared, relay 20 is then tie-energized opening switch 21, 21a. Delayed time relay 60 is then (la-energized. By opening switch 2, 2A, the circuit will again be operative as hereinbefore described.
De-energized relay 60 will then allow switches I8I, I8Ia and I62, I82a. to open, and switch I62, H521) to close. Opening switch I8I, I8Ia will open the circuit of signal I64 and make the same inoperative. By closing switch I62, I 62b the printing solenoid will again be energized.
Relay us will be energized by the circuit through coil I16, wire I83, switch I12, I12b, wire I60 and switch I62, I62b. Switch I11, I11a closes, energizing printing solenoid I80. Platen I19, in moving upward,- opens switch I82, I82b, thereby de-energizing relay I10. Relay I10, being de-energized, will allow switch I12, I12b to open, thereby de-energizing relay I15. Switch I11, I11a opens de-energizing the printing solenoid I80, allowing platen I18 to return to its initial position.
If switches 4, 4A and 3, 8A are shorted for any length of time beyond the time set on delayed time relay 60, the said relay will be energized by the circuit through coil 6I, wire I34, switch I88, I56a, wires H3 and 28, switch 48, 48a, wires 8, 29 and I24, and switch 31, 31a.
If switches I, IA and then switch 3, 3A are shorted, the delayed time relay 60 will again be energized. The circuit then would be through wire I34, switch I56, I56a, wires H3 and 28, switch I8, I8a, wires 8, 29 and I24 and switch 31, 31a, 78
Similarly, should switch 4, 4A and then switch 2, 2A be shorted, delayed time relay 60 will be energized through switch 48, 48a, as aforesaid, wires 8, 29 and I24, and then through switch 21, 21a. Opening switch 3, 3A or switch 2, 2A will dHllelgiZe the delayed time relay 60.
Should switch I, IA be shorted, and then switches 2, 2A and 3, 3A; or switch 4, 4A and then switches 2, 2A and 3, 3A, delayed time relay will again be energized. The said relay will be released when both switchesZ, 2A and 3, 3A are opened.
Throughout the specification and claims, the word "bridged" is used to mean shorted and/0r closed. Thus a bridged switch" is one capable of influencing the operation of th disclosed circult.
Throughout the specification the term outer" or outside" switches refers to switches I, IA and 4, 4A, and the terms inner and inside switches, refer to the switches 2, 2A and 3, 3A.
