To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV LENTZ, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at the city of Dusseldorf, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Locomotives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a novel combination and arrangement of the steam-cylinders and drive-wheel axles of tender-locomotives, more especially designed for high speed; and it consists, essentially, in the relative arrangement and combination of the drive wheel axles, the steam-cylinders, their piston and driving rods, with the fore and aft coupled drive-Wheels, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Many effortshave been made, heretofore without good results to construct tender-locomotives for high speed, and such results can only be obtained, with widely-separated drivewheel axles, by avoiding as much as possible overhanging structural masses and in so loeating the cylinders as to avoid the jerking action of the piston-rods on the crank or wrist pins, and the consequent irregular movement of the machine.
If the steam-cylinders are located above the drive-Wheel axles, as is the case with all such locomotives now, it is an impossibility to locate the drive-wheel axles far apart, and hence their axles are located comparatively near each other, in order to obtain a sufficiently long` driving-rod, and avoid as much as possible the jerking action upon the wristpins, and this necessitates the use of runners, as in the Crampton and other systems, while such locomotive-tenders are not adapted for high speed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, both partly in section, illustrating the application of my invention.
The tender-locomotive may be constructed in any preferred manner and of any desired pattern or style, as I do not claim any improvements in the construction of such locomotives, except in so far as the peculiar arrangement of steam-cylinders relatively to the drive-wheel axles is concerned; and in the above drawings A and B represent the fore and at't drive-wheels, respectively, and A and B their respective axles, the latter, B', being located behind the tire-box in order to increase the distance as much as possible between said axles and dispense with the usual runners.
C C are the steam-cylinders, located on the main frame F of the locomotive, between the said frame and the connecting-rods D, that connect the drivers together, and between the axles of said drivers, either in a horizontal position or in a slightly-inclined position, but as near as possible in the plane of motion of the connecting-rods D.
The piston-rods and slide-valve rods are connected in any usual manner, respectively, to the wrist-pin b of the rear drive-wheel and to the axle of the latter.
It will be apparent that by means of the above-described relative arrangement ofsteamcylinders and coupled drive-wheel axles I am enabled to dispense with the usual runners, do away with overhanging structural masses, obtain a perfectly smooth and even working of the drive-rods and piston, and adapt the tender-locomotive to high-speed service better than any machine of this class heretofore constructed.
