The present invention relates to filtering strainers especially designed and adapted for use in straining and ltering milk as it is poured into large cans for shipment, and is in the nature of an improvement on that type of filtering strainer described and claimed in my U. S. Letters Patent 1,958,701, granted May 15, 1934, for an improvement in Filtering strainers.
An object of the invention is to provide a ltering strainer having these advantages and capacities, and which is simple, durable, and compact in construction, reliable, effective, and sanitary in use, and readily handled and cleaned and also susceptible of economical manufacture from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the constructionuarrangement, and combination of parts which will -be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in diagrammatic vertical cross section showing a ltering strainer embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view thereof in horizontal cross section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, with parts broken away for the sake of illustration;
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the splash ring, baille plate, and handle assembly;
and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view taken on line 4--4 of Figure l and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, and more particularly to Figure 1, it will be seen that the filtering strainer embodying the present invention comprises the usual bowl 5 having its upper end open and provided with an outwardly rolled rim or bead 6. Integral with the lower end of the bowl is a reduced cylindrical extension 1 which is adapted to be inserted in the open top or open upper end of a milk can (not shown). A perforated plate 8 extends across the lower outlet end of the extension 1. This plate 8 may be integral with the lower edge of the peripheral wall of the extension l, or may be a separate piece suitably secured thereto. The body of the plate is formed with a multiplicity of perforations, but the outer peripheral or edge portion thereof, designated at 9, is imperforate to provide a seat or surface against whichl a ltering pad or disk l0 may be clamped and sealed.
To preserve the structural integrity of the plate 8, and specially of the seat or surface 9 thereof, a reinforcing collar l I is press-fitted on or otherwise suitably secured to the outer peripheral portion of the lower end of theiextension l. This collar Ii is formed with a hollow rolled bead structure i2 which'extends down below the lower end of the extension l, and which has integral therewith an inwardly directed annular iiange I3 disposed in close engagement with the underside of the seat or portion 9 of theperforated plate 8, and soldered, welded, braized, or otherwise suitably secured thereto.
When the strainer is in use, the reduced extension 'l is inserted in the neck or upper open end of the milk can (not shown). When s0 inserted the portion I4 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending angularly spaced and outwardly` open venting grooves l5. These venting groovesr I5V may be conveniently formed by depressing or inwardly displacinxfg areas of the bowl structure in the manner illustrated in the drawing.
A pair of handles I6 facilitate thehandling of the filtering strainer.
- To prevent the milk being poured into the strainer from washing( away the bers of the filtering disk and making holes therein, or making the disk so thin that it cannot function properly, the present invention proposes an imperforate baffle plate or disk 2B, whichin the assembly is located at the lower end of the bowlthat is, at the point where the bowl merges into the reduced extension 1. The baffle plate 20 may be slightly dished so as to slope to all points of its periphery and its outside diameter is just slightly less than the inside diameter of the reduced extension 'l so as to provide a drainage groove or channel 2l between its edge and the inner wall of the extension 1. Combined with the imperforate baille plate 20 is an imperforate combination' clamping and splash ring, designated'generally at 22.` This ring 22 underlies the drainage slot or channel 2l so that the milk flowing through'the slot or channel 2l will fall'on the imperforate ring 22, thereby protecting the filtering pad. The ring 22 hasa downwardly oiset peripheral portion 23 which functions as a clamping ring, and in so doing presses the peripheral edge of the filtering diskv or pad rmly against its seat 9. To enable the portion 23 to perform this function it is provided at angularly spaced points around its outer peripheral edge with integralvupstanding Varcuate locking lugs 24, these lugs 24 being concentric with the ring 22 and having their upper edges inclined or tapered with respect to the horizontal. In the assembly the lugs 24 have locking engagement with cooperable camming projections 25 which may be pressed inwardly from the wall of the reduced extension 'l at angularly spaced points. Inwardly of the clamping portion 23 of the ring is the main body portion 26 thereof. This portion 25 is upwardly displaced with respect to the clamping portion 23 and it is provided with an upturned inner edge flange 21 around its inner periphery. The upturned inner edge flange 21 provides a dam over which the milk must ilow on its way to the filtering pad. By having the main portion of the ring 22 offset upwardly, substantially the full area of the filtering pad is able to function since the milk after flowing over the dam 21 will flow on to the pad and also under the portion 25 to utilize substantially th'e full area of the filtering pad.
To. maintain the baille plate 20 and splash ring 22 assembled, and facilitate manipulation thereof, an inverted U-shaped or bail-type handle 28 is provided. The handle 28 is constituted of rod stock and has the lower ends of its vertical legs 29 riveted, welded, soldered, braized, or otherwise secured to the ring 22. The legs 28 also pass through openings provided in the baille plate 20 and are secured to the baffle plate to support the same' in vertically spaced relation to the ring. The transverse portion 30 of the handle may be conveniently grasped so` as to facilitate manipula.- tion of the handle 28 and of the parts carried thereby.
While I have shown and described one construction in which the invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that the construction shown has been selected merely for the purpose of illustration or example, and that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement ofy the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A filtering strainer of the character described comprising a bowl having a reduced cylindrical extension at its lower end, a perforated plate extending across the outlet end of said extension, a iltering pad on said plate, a combined clamping and imperforate splash ring fittable in the extension and holding the filtering pad against said perforated plate, interengageable locking means on the extension and ring for releasably securing the ring in clamping engagement with the pad, an imperforate baille plate of circular form disposed at the juncture of the bowl and said extension and having an 'outside diameter just slightly less than the inside diameter of the extension to define a drainage groove between its outer peripheral edge and the inner peripheral wall of the extension, said combined clamping and splash ring underlying said drainage groove, and means connecting said ring and said baille plate in spaced relation and also facilitating the handling of the ring and baille plate` as a unit.
2. A :filtering strainer of the character described comprising a bowl having a reduced extension at its 'lower end, a perforated plate extending across the outlet end of said extension, a, ltering pad on said plate, a combined clamping and imperforate splash ring iittable in the eX- tension and having its outer peripheral portion downwardly offset. and adapted to have clampingl engagement with` the peripheral` edge ofthe filter-l ing pad, interengageable locking means on the extension and ring for releasably securing the ring in clamping engagement with the pad, an inverted U-shaped handle having the lower ends of its legs secured to said ring, a horizontally disposed baille plate carried by intermediate portions of the legs and disposed in spaced vertical relation to the ring and at the juncture of the bowl and its extension, said baille plate having an outside diameter slightly less than the inside diameter lof the extension to provide for flow of the milk around the edge of the plate and down on to the underlying extension ring, the body of the splash ring inwardly of the clamping portion thereof being disposed above the iiltering pad to increase the effective area of the pad.

6. A ltering strainer of the character described having a perforated support at its outlet end, a ltering pad on said support, a filtering pad on said perforated support, a combined clamping and splash ring having a downwardly offset clamping portion around its outer periphery engageable with the pad, interengageable locking means on the strainer and ring for releasably securing the ring in clamping engagement with the pad, a handle having its lower end secured to the ring and its upper end disposed in said bowl, and an imperforate baiile plate of circular form carried by an intermediate portion of said handle and having its peripheral edge in closed, spaced relation to and c'oacting with the strainer to provide a drainage groove overlying the imperforate splash ring.
7. A ltering strainer of the character described comprising a bowl having a reduced cylindrical extension at its lower end, a plate extending across the outlet end of the extension and having its body portion perforated but having an annular portion at its periphery imperforate and presenting a smooth flat seat, a iiltering pad on saidplate, a combined clamping and splash ring ttable in the extension and having its outer peripheral portion downwardly offset and adapted for clamping engagement with the peripheral edge of the filtering pad, interengageable means on the extension and ring for releasably securing the ring in clamping engagement with the pad, an imperiorate bale -plate disposed at the juncture of the bowl and its extension and slightly smaller than the extension to define between its periphery and the inner peripheral Wall of the extension a drainage groove overlying the splash ring, and means connecting the ring and baffle plate to maintain them in proper relation with each other and facilitate handling them as a unit.
