Claims. Ell-156) My invention relates to an improvement in razor blade holders, wherein it is desired to provide a device which is capable of being used as a scraper and in which` the blade may be folded into a protected position when not in use.
Various types of scraper blades have been designed for numerous purposes. Certain of these scraper blades are designed with a clamping devicerfor holding the razor blade, which is pivotally mounted upon a supporting handle. When the clamping device is swung into operative position the blade projects from the holder and may be used for various scraping purposes. When pivoted into another position the blade is entirely concealed so that the holder may be safety stored or carried about.
It is the object of the present invention to improve on these former devices and to provide a razor blade holder which is useful and advantageous over these previous forms of holders. The present device is designed to contain an extra blade, as well as to safely support the operative blade, and has other advantages which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a scraper blade holder including a pair of clamping plates between which the razor blade is removably supported, and to so design these clamping plates that they extend flush with the ends of the blade. By so constructing the clamping plates the full width of the razor blade may be used for there are no projecting portions on the clamping plate which prevent the holder from being used in corners or directly against the edge of a surface bounded by some type of frame.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a razor blade holder including a clamping device between which the blade is removably positioned, which clamping plates are locked together in a simple and effective manner. This locking device is so designed that during insertion or removal of the blade it is only necessary to slide one of the clamping plates laterally with respect to the other in order to connect or disconnect Vthe locking means.
It is a feature of my invention to provide a scraper blade embodying a pair of clamping plates between which a razor blade, or the like, is securely supported, and to embody a clamping plate securing means engaged and disengaged by a lateral relative movement of one` of the plates. This locking means is combined with a second locking means which normally prevents lateral movement of the plates, thus holding the two platesfrom accidental disengagement.
It is a` feature ofthe present invention to provide a razor bladel holder including clamping l plates between which the razor blade is supported and to provide a single fastening means which acts not only to lock` the clamping means togetherbut also acts to pivotally secure the clampingv means and razor blade to the holder therefor.

It is a further feature of my invention to provide a rreceptacle within the handle of the holder for containing one orv more extra razor blades. Thisreceptacle is so arranged that the blade may beheld therein continually ready for use, but securely held from accidental disengagement. The receptacle is so devised as to necessitate the flexing of the blade in order to insert or remove the same. Thus the construction utilizes the' natural flexibility of the razor blade to hold the blade within the receptacle. The blade lcan be instantly removed by engaging any suitable toolV in one of the usual apertures through the blade. By exerting a longitudinal pull upon the tool the blade will flex sufliciently to' permit its removal.
It is a'further feature "of my invention that my holder is designed to accommodate various types ofblades. While the holder is particularly valuable when used with a blade of a certain type, other blades can be usedtherein, as the clamping means is so designed as to extend through the usual apertures found in such blades.
These and other objects and novel features of my invention will be more clearly and fullyv set forth in the following specification and claims.

The handle portion of the holder is formed of two substantially similar elements which are spot welded together. These elements 22 and 23 are provided with flanged edges 24 extending throughout a major portion of the periphery thereof, as is illustrated by the drawing. The handle portions 22 and 23 have an enlarged hand engaging end 1.26 thereon, from the upper end of which projects a'pair of substantially L-shaped extensions 21.

The razor blade holder A illustrated in Figures 1 through 6 of the drawing, includes a pair of clamping plates I and I I, between which may be clamped the razor blade B. The clamping plates I0 and I I are formed as best illustrated in Figures 1 through 5 of the drawing and in the form shown are providedV with a forward straight edge I2, parallel sides I3, and a curved rear edge I4. The clamping plates I D and II are similar in shape and when the blade B is clamped therebetween the various edges correspond.
The clamping plate II is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed circular bosses I projecting upwardly therefrom. These bosses I5 are formed of material in the plate II and extend throughtransversely extending slots or apertures I6 in the plate I0. Thus it will be noted that the plates I0 and II are held from forward and reverse movement when in clamping position by aswill be noted in Figure 1 of the drawing. This construction permits the clamping plates to prothe bosses I 5, and slots I6, but one of these plates may move laterally or transversely with respect to the other.
Between the slots I6,VY I provide a central slot I1 in the plate Il). A hook-shaped projection I9 is formed on the plate I I by bending a portion of the plate II upwardly and then parallel tothe body of the plate II, as is best illustrated in Figure 5 0f the drawing. When the plates I0 and II are in one extreme slidableposition, as indicated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing, the hook I 9 extends over a portion of the clamping plate I0 adjacentthe slot I1. However, when the plate I0 is moved laterally with respect to the plate Il, as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the hook I9 disengages the plate I0 and this plate I0 may be removed by merely lifting the samervertically. Thus the hook I9 forms a locking means which prevents separation of the plates I0 and II when the razor blade B is clamped therebetween,and when the plates are in the regular position indicated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing.
Thus it is obvious that the razor blade B may only be removed when the plates are in their regular position illustrated in Figure 4. In order to prevent the plates I0 and II from sliding into the position illustrated in Figure 4, each of the plates is provided with an aperture 20. These ject therebetween in one pivotal position thereof.
The ends of the L-shaped extensions are provided with apertures through which the pivot bolt 2I extends, thus the pivot bolt is provided with a head 29 on one side of the extensions 21. A shank which extends through the apertures 20 and the apertures 35 in the extensions 21 and the bolt 2| is provided with a thumb nut 3| which may be tightened to hold the clamping plates in any desired pivotal position.
, The extensions 21 are spaced apart throughout the major portion of the area, and in the position shown in full lines in Figure 1 of the drawing, the curved edge I4 is enclosed between the short end of the L-shaped projections. Pivotal movement in this direction is limited by a finger 32 which is cut from the body of the plate I0 and is bent outwardly terminating in a portion parallel to the body of the plate I Ii. This hook-shaped linger 32 engages over the end of the projections 21, as illustrated in Figure 1, limiting pivotal movement and providing a bearing between the clamping plates and the handle. Pressure against the blade B is transmitted through the clamping plates I0 and II directly against the handle portion. A detent 33 in the finger 32 engages in an aperture in one of the extensions 21, so as t0 frictionally resist pivotal movement of the clamping plates .i5 and I I out of the operative position shown in full lines in Figure 1.
When it is desired to store the holder or to carry the same in inoperative position, it is only necessary to swing the plates IU and I I about the pivot bolt ZI into the position illustrated in dotted outline in Figure 1 of the drawing. In this position a detent 35 in the extension 21 engages in an aperture 29 in the plate I0 to frictionally resist pivotal movement in either direction. When in the position indicated in dotted outline, the blade B is enclosed between the extensions 21 and the cutting edge of the blade faces the ange 24.
The blade B is preferably a double edged type of blade, in which the cutting surface extends the entire width of the blade. A common type of safety razor blade of double edge type is of similar construction, but has a portion of the body thereof extending beyond the ends of the cutting edges. The blade B may be of special manufacture or may be made by grinding off the projecting portions of the body which extend beyond the cutting edges of the blade. If desired the blades may be used without grinding, but such a blade is somewhat disadvantageous as the body projects to each side beyond the cutting surface. The handle portions 22 and 23 are bent inwardly to form substantially cup-shaped recesses 36 and 31. As best illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawing the bases of these recesses 36 and 31 contact when the anged. edges 24 of the handle portions 22 and 23 are in abutting relation. Electrodes are placed in the receptacles 36 and 31 and the handle portions 22 and 23 are spot welded together at these points.
The ilanged abutting edges 24 provide a hollow receptacle within the hand engaging portion 23 of the handle. A pair of notches 39 are cut from the body of the handle portion 23, as best illustrated in Figure l. A linger 40 is cut from the body of the handle portion 23 and is bent downwardly at an angle into contact with the handle portion as is clearly illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawing.
A blade B may be positioned within the hollow handle. The blade B is inserted by directing one end of the blade into the hollow receptacle, sliding this edge of the blade downwardly along the` tongue or finger 49. The shoulders 4i, formed by the ends of the notches 39, act to curve the blade or to flex the same as it is inserted. When the blade B is entirely within the receptacle it may rest flat or substantially flat. 'Ihe tongue 40 is so positioned that one of the apertures 42 of the blade B is positioned beneath the cut-out portion of the handle, above this tongue. Accordinglyby inserting some tool into the aperture 42, which is exposed, the blade B may be pulled from the hollow handle, the blade flexing or curving as it is withdrawn. Obviously the blade B will not come out of the receptacle without assistance, as it is necessary to ex the blade to insert or withdraw the same.
In Figures '1 through 10 of the drawing I disclose a modified form of holder, which is indicated in general by the letter C. The blade holder C includes a pair of clamping plates 43 and 44, between which the blade D is clamped.
The blade B is of the type commonly used in Gem razors, and is provided with a folded protecting band 45 enclosing the edge of the blade opposite to the sharpened cutting edge.
In view of the fact that the blade D which is supported, is provided with the enclosing edge` 45, the clamping plates 43 and 44 must be oiset at a point spaced from the forward edges thereof to accommodate this folded strip 45. The
extreme forward edges 45 and 41, respectively, of
the clamping plates 43 and 44 engage the surface of the blade D. An olset portion 49 and. 59 is provided in each of the plates 43 and 44, respectively, and the rear edge of each of the plates 43 and 44 is again oiset into contacting relation, as illustrated at 5| in Figure 8 of the drawing. The offsets 49 and 5i) extend rearwardly to provide an enlarged bulged portion 52 on each of the plates 43 and 44 to fill the space between the opposed offset ends 53 of the han-V dle 54.
The handle 54includes a hand engaging portion 55 on each of two cooperating handle portions 56 and 51. A iiange 59 extends about the hand engaging portion 55 and these ilanges 59 are secured in abutting relationship. Substantially cup-shaped recesses 60 and 6l are provided in each of the handle portions 56 and 51 and the bases of the-se cup-shaped recesses are welded together to hold the two parts of the handle with the flanges 59 in abutting relation. Projecting portions 62 extend upwardly from the hand engaging portion 55, terminating in the offset handle portions 53. The extreme tips 63 of the offset portions 53 are bent somewhat closel` together than the remaining portions of the ofirmly therebetween.
The plate 43 is provided with an ear 54 bent downwardly from the body of the plate near onev side edge thereof.y This ear 64 engages in a notch 65 in the plate 44. The ear 64 also engages ina suitable slot 66 in the razor blade D. At the opposite edge of the clamping head the plate 44 is provided with an ear 61 which engages into a ture 1I, and the end of this ear is bent parallel to the plate 44 so that when the plates 43 and 44 are in registry the end ofthe hook-shaped element 12 engages over an edge of the plate 44 adjacent the opening. Thus when in the position shown in Figure '1 of the drawing, the plates 43 and 44 are held together by the hook-shaped ear 12, but when in the other position of movement shown in Figure 9 the ear 12 is disengaged from the plate 43 so that the plate 43 may be lifted ofi' from the plate 44 for replacement of the blade D.
In order to assist in holding the blade D in place an ear 13 is bent from the body of the plate 44 at the forward edge thereof, and extends upwardly through a slot 14 in the blade D and through a transverse slot 15 in the plate 43. This slot 15 is of suicient length to permit lateral movement of the plates 43 and 44 to the extent shown in Figure 9.
Apertures 16 are provided in the plates 43 and 44, and these apertures are coaxial or move into registry when the plates 43 and 44 are in registry as shown in Figure 7. The plates 43 and 44 are held in registry by a pivot bolt 11 which extends through the apertures 13 and through corresponding axially aligned apertures in the extreme ends E3 of the extensions (52. A thumb nut 1B on the bolt 1'.' clamps the various parts in their relative positions.
An ear 3l) is cut from the body of the plate 43 and extends over the edge of the end 53 of the handle 54. This ear 30 limits. pivotal movement of the clamping head in one rotative direction. An indentation 8l is provided on the ear 80 to extend into an aperture 82 in the plate 43 to holdthe clamping head locked in operative position'. When it is desired to store the blade or tov move the clamping head out of operative position the plates 43 and 44, with the blade D, may be swung about the pivot bolt 15 in the manner previously described in conjunction with the holder A, so that the cutting edge of the blade D is interposed between the extensions 62 of the handle 54. An indentation 83 on the extension B2v engages in an aperture 84 on the clamping platey 43 so as to hold the clamping head in inoperativev position when it is so desired.
It will be noted that the double handle arrangement is only provided for the purpose of somewhat strengthening the construction and to improve the appearance of the device. As all of the mechanism can satisfactorily be secured to one side of the blade which is the uppermost side, as viewed in Figure '1, the specic construction set ends 53, so as to clamp the platess43 and 44 of the double handle is not important in the present invention.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my razor blade holder, and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiments thereof, I desire to have it understood that these are only illustrative of a means of carrying out my invention, and that obvious changes may be made within the scope of the following claims Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A holder for razor blades comprising a handle, a pair of clamping plates designed to clamp a razor blade therebetween, interlocking means interconnecting said clamping plates and disengageable by a relative slidable movement of said plates, and bolt means for normally holding said clamping plates from relative slidable movement.
2.- A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a lpair of clamping plates for clamping a razor blade therebetween, interlocking means on said plates operable when engaged to prevent separation of said clamping plates, said interconnecting means disengaging upon a relative slidable movement of said plate, and pivot bolt means extending through said clamping plates and said holder to 'pivotally support said plates to said handle and to prevent relative slidable movement between said plates.
3. A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a pair of clamping plates between which a razor blade may be clamped, means on one of vsaid clamping plates for holding a razor blade from relative movement with respect to said plate, interlocking means between said plates operable when engaged to prevent disengagement of said plates except through a slidable relative movement, and pivotal attaching means extending through said plates and said handle to pivotally connect said plates and said handle, and to prevent said slidable movement between said plates.
4. A razor blade holder comprising a pair of clamping plates, means on one of said plates extending through the razor blade and through the other of said clamping plates, guide slots in said other clamping plate in which said extending means is positioned to permit relative movement, said extending means moving within the connes of said guide slots, a handle and a pivotal supporting means extending through said guide plates and through said handle to pivotally secure said guide plates to said handle and to lock said clamping plates from relative movement'. 5,.,A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a pair o f clamping plates between which a razor blade may be clamped, means on one of said clamping plates extending through the f razor blade, guide means on the other of said clamping means into which said extending means extends toguide relative sliding movement between said clamping plates and interlocking means interlocking said clamping plates together in one relative slidable position of said clamping plates and interlocking said plates to permit separation thereof in another slidable position of said plate as guided by said guide means, andY pivot means extending through said clamping plates and said handle for pivotally connecting said handle for holding said plates from relative slidable movement.
6. A razor blade holder comprising a pairroi clamping plates between which a razor blade may beclamped, cooperable guide means on said clamping plates to limit relative slidable movement'between said plates, interlocking means interconnecting said clamping plates and disengageable by a relative slidable movement of said plates, and a se'cond locking means for holding said plates in interlocking relation.
7. A holder for razor blades comprising a handle, a pair of clamping plates for clamping a razor blade therebetween, means on one of said plates extending through the razor blade for holding said razor blade in xed relation with respect thereto, guidev slots in the other of said clamping plates into which said extending means extends, said slots permitting relative slidable movement between said vplates between two extreme positions, means on one of said plates interlocking with the other of said plates and disengageable by a relative slidable movement of said plates from one extreme position to the other, and pivot means extending through said plates and through said handle to connect said plates to said handley and to prevent slidable movement of said plates..
8. A razor blade holder comprising a pair of clamping plates between which a blade may be clamped, said blade yhaving a folded strip enclosing an edge of the blade opposite the cutting edge, said plates having a transverse oiset portion to accommodate said folded strip therebetween, an interlocking means operable by a re1- ative lateral sliding movement of said clamping plates and interconnecting said plates in one slidable position and releasing said plates for operation in another lateral slidable position, a handle and pivot bolt means extending through said handle and said clamping plates for holding said plates in interlocking position.
9. A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a pair of clamping plates designed to clamp a razor blade therebetween, interlocking means for securing said clamping plates together, a pivot bolt extending through said plates and through said handle pivotally connecting said plates, swingable with respect to said handle means, lmiting pivotal movement of said plates with respect to said handle in one direction'to hold said blade in scraping position, and means for limiting pivotal movement of said plates with respect to said handle in the other direction and holding the'blade in inoperative position.
10. A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a pair of clamping plates designed to clamp a razor blade therebetween, means interlocking said plates from separation, a pivot bolt extending through said clamping plates and through said handle to hold said plates swingable with respect to said handle means limiting pivotal movement of said plates in one direction to support the blade in scraping position, means limiting pivotal movement ofthe plates in the other direction to support the blade in inoperative position, and spring means cooperating between one of said plates and said handle for resisting pivotal movement between the plates .and the handle when said plates are in either extreme position.
