11 Claims. ((1170- 370) fI-hisinvention relates to :lock .plates and has particular reference to means for securing a lock cylinder :in its :supporting panel.
Itis an object of thisinvention to provide a lock plate which may be quickly and easily installed.
It is .another object .of this invention *to provide a .lockcylinderand plate assembly in which the resiliency of .the .plate operates .to hold the :cylinder in place.
It is another object of this invention to '-'pr.ovide ainovel lock cylinder and ilock'plate which interlock to hold the cylinder -against axial and rotative movement.
Other objects and advantages .of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of thefollowing description :and claims and :the attached drawing of which :there is one sheet :and andrin which- :Figure 1 represents a :sectional view through a door .panel showing a .lock cylinder in elevation;

Figure 3 represents a :side elevation of the washer positioned between the lock cylinder and the outside of the panel;

Figure :6 represents a sectional view taken along a plane indicated by the line '6-6 in :Figure 5.
Shown in the drawing is a lock cylinder generally indicated at II) which is shouldered at I? and provided with the usual tumblers and lock mechanism (not shown). The lock is operated by a key M which turns a locking bar l6 of rectangular cross section. The bar l6 may be extended to any suitable type of locking mechanism known to the art today. The cylinder Ill extends through an aperture in the panel l8 of a door which is to be secured by the lock.
The cylinder 10 is provided with two ribs which extend along the sides of the cylinder from the shoulder l2 as elements of the cylinder. The ribs 2!] are positioned on opposite sides of the cylinder and are notched as at 22 (see Figure 1) at a distance from the shoulder l2 equal to the combined thickness of the panel I8 and washer 24. The notches 22 are thus flush with the inside surface of the panel l3 when the cylinder is installed in the panel.
Located on the side of'the "cylinder it, equidistant from the ribs 20, is a lug 126. Lug 25 extends from theshoulder l2 far enough to project a short distance beyond the inside surface of the :panel 18 when the lock cylinder is inplace. The'washer 241is notched as :at 2% (see Figure 4) to :pass the ribs 22 and lug 2%. The aperture in the plate 18 "is provided with similar notches so that the :cylinder fits snugly in the aperture. The notches in the plate prevent the cylin fromxturning. E
The cylinder I0 is retained in place by a locking plate 3% which is formed as an annular ring provided with ears. 32 which are turned inwardly from the :panel I8 and are positioned along a diameter of the ring. The ears'32 are apertured as at .313 so that a tool may be engaged with them. The ring'is made of spring material and isbent along a cylindrical surface so that in its free position the portion of the ring midway between the ears 32 is raised inwardly from a fiat plane passedthrough .the base of the ears 32. lhe aperture 34 in the center ofthe plate 30 is slightly larger than the diameter of the cylinder 10 so as to'pass over the cylinder andis notched oneach side'at 36"along a linetpassed through the base :ofthe ears 32. Thus, when the locking plate '30 'is placed over-the cylinder m, the notches 36 will clear the ribs 20, and thefbases of the ears 32 'will strike the inside of panel I8 first. ihe lower edges of the ring 30 adjacent the notches 3$ will be .aligned with the notches 22 in the ribs 20 and .the ring 310 :may be rotated by a tool applied to the cars :32. The inside edges of the notches 22 will ride on the *curved in portion of the plate 3.0 and flatten the plate. When the plate is rotated 90, one of the notches .35 will snap over the lug 26 to prevent further rotation of the plate. The spring in the plate 35 will force the portion of the ring adjacent to the notches 36 firmly against the panel 13 and around the lug 26, thus preventing accidental removal of the lock plate 30. To remove the lock, the lock plate 30 must be pried up by pulling out the ear 32 which is engaged with the lug 26 until the plate clears the lug so that the plate may be rotated until the notches 36 are again aligned with the ribs 20 after which the lock plate may be removed.
The lock cylinder I0 is thus held in place by a single simple part without the use of the screws or bolts.
While I have described my invention in some detail, I intend this description to be an example only and not as a limitation of my invention to which I make the following claims:
1. In combination with a door panel defining an aperture having notches spaced therearound, a cylinder lock positioned in said aperture, an annular lock plate positioned around said cylinder on the inside of said door panel and having a notch therein, ribs formed on said cylinder and engageable with said lock plate to prevent axial movement of said plate, and a lug formed on said cylinder and engaged with the notch in said plate to prevent rotation of said plate relative to said cylinder, said ribs and lug being positioned in the notches of the aperture in said door panel.
2. In combination with a door panel defining an aperture, a cylinder lock positioned in said aperture, an annular lock plate positioned around said cylinder on the inside of said doorpanel, ribs formed on said cylinder and engageable with said lock plate to prevent axial movement of said plate, and a lug formed on said cylinder and engageable with said plate to prevent rotation of said plate relative to said cylinder.
3. In combination with a door panel defining an aperture, a shouldered lock cylinder positioned in said aperture, a lock plate carried around said cylinder on the opposite side of said panel from the shoulder of said cylinder, ribs formed on said cylinder and retaining said lock plate against said door panel, and a lug formed on said cylinder and engaging saidlock plate to prevent rotation thereof, said lock plate being made of curved spring material.
4. In combination with a door panel defining an aperture, a cylinder lock positioned in said aperture, an annular lock plate arranged to fit around said cylinder, said annular plate being bent inwardly along a cylindrical plane, ears formed on the edges of said lock plate opposite said bent in portion, ribs formed on said cylinder and arranged toclraw the bent in portion of said lock plate against said panel when said lock plate is rotated between said ribs and the inside sur: face of said door panel.
5. In combination with a door panel defining an aperture, a cylinder lock positioned in said aperture, an annular lock plate arranged to fit around said cylinder, said annular plate being bent inwardly along a cylindrical plane, ears formed on the edges of said lock plate opposite said bent in portion, ribs formed on said cylinder and arranged to draw the bent in portion of said lock plate against said panel when said lock plate is rotated between said ribs and the inside surface of said door panel, and a lug arranged to engage said lock plate and to prevent its further rotation.
6. A lock plate for securing a lock cylinder in a door panel comprising an annular portion having an internal diameter approximately equal to the diameter of said lock cylinder, ears formed along the diameter of said lock plate along the outer periphery thereof, the inner periphery of said plate defining a pair of notches adjacent to said ears, and a bent in portion on the end of each of said ears, said lock plate being of bowed spring construction.
7. Lock structure comprising a door panel defining an aperture, a lock cylinder positioned in said aperture, ribs formed as elements along opposite sides of said cylinder and defining notches in the plane of the inside surface of said door panel, a curved annular lock plate positioned aroundsaid lock cylinder and engageabl with the ribs of said cylinder, and a lug formed on said cylinder and arranged to prevent said lock plate from rotating relative to said cylinder.
8. Lock mechanism-comprising -a door panel defining an aperture, a lock cylinder positioned in said aperture, an annular lock plate arranged to fit around said cylinder, projections formed on said cylinder and arranged to engage one face of said lock plate to retain the plate against said panel and another projection formed on said cylinder and arranged to engage an edge of said lock plate to prevent rotation of said plate.
9. In combination with a door panel, a lock body carried by said panel, and an annular lock plate carried around said cylinder on the inside of said panel, said plate being made of spring material and being initially curved along a cylindrical plane.
10. Lock structure comprising a cylinder having a shoulder therearound, a rib formed as an element along one side of said cylinder andextending from said shoulder, and a lug formed as an element along the side of said cylinder and angularly displaced from said rib, said lug being shorter than said rib, said rib being notched in a plane passed transversely through said cylinder and along the end of said lug.
11. Means for retaining a cylinder lock in a panel defining a notched aperture comprising ribs formed along the sides of said cylinder lock and positioned in the notches of said aperture, an annular lock plate positioned around said cylinder engageable with said ribs to prevent movement of said plate axially with respect to said cylinder, and a lug formed on said cylinder lock and engaged with a notch in said plate to prevent rotation of said plate relative to said cylinder.
