Hau/ry Blau Patented Feb. 2, 1943 unirse STATES PATENTv offence UNDERGARMENT Harry Blau, New York, N. Y. I
`Application August 21, 1941, Serial No. 407,705'v I 2 Claims.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for facilitating fastening and unfastening holding means in the crotch of undergarments, such as an undershirt or vest having means fastening the lower edges of the front and back through the crotch.
The invention is an undergarment having fastening means for holding the lower edges through the crotch in which pockets are provided in combination with the fastening means so that the tips of the fingers may -be inserted in the pockets to facilitate fastening and unfastening the fastening means, thereby .providing longer reach, eliminating slipping of the fingers, and making it unnecessary to bend over to reach the fastening means.
The object of the invention is therefore, to provide an undergarment of the type having fastening means at the crotch, in which the front is closed.
Another object is to provide means for fastening garments that fasten through the crotch so .that it is unnecessary to bend over to fasten or unfasten the garment.
Another object is to provide means for fastening an undershirt through the crotch which provides a longer reach.
A further object is to provide means at the lower edges of the front and back of an undershirt so that it may be fastened through the crotch without the fingers slipping from the edges.
And a still further object is to provide an undergarment with means facilitating fastening the lower edges through the crotch which is of a simple `and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies an undershirt having pockets at the lower edges of the front and back with fastening means on the outer surface of the pocket at the front and in the under surface or wall of the garment adjacent the pocket or pockets at the rear.
Other features Iand advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of an undershirt with a pocket at the front as shown in full lines, and with pockets at the rear shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 shows an alternate design in which the pocket at the front is open at one side only and a hem at the lower part of the garment extends upward to about the waist line.
Figure 3 shows another alternate design in which the pocket at the rear is formed in one piece.
Figure 4 is a rear view showing theV lower part of the garment shown in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view looking upward toward the lower end of the garment with the lower edges fastened.
Figure 6 is a detail showinga method of fastening the lower edges of the garment through the crotch with the ngers in the pockets.
Figure 7 shows an alternate design in which a fly is provided in combination with the pocket at the front.
Figure 8 is a detail showing an alternate type of pocket at the front.
In the drawing the garment is shown as it may be made wherein numeral I indicates the garment, numeral 2, a pocket at the front, and numerals 3 and 4 pockets at the rear.
The garment I may be of any type or design and may be made of any material, and the pocket 2 is formed at the lower edge of the front with a at piece of material stitched across the top and bottom at the points 5 and B, with the sides open and on the outer face of the pocket are buttons 'I and 8. The lower edge of the back is provided with button-holes 9 and IU and the pockets 3 and 4 are positioned on each side of the buttonholes, as shown in Figure 4. It will be noted that with the forenger and second nger of one hand inserted in the pocket 2, and with the same fingers of the other hand in the pockets 3 and 4 the buttonholes 9 and I0 may readily be buttoned over the buttons 'I and 8 through the crotch as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
The pockets may be of various shapes and designs and in Figure 2 one side II of a pocket I2, similar to the pocket 2, is stitched providing a pocket open at one side only, and in Figure 7 the pocket I3 similar to the pocket 2, is extended providing a y I4, and in Figure 8 both sides of the pocket are stitched and the top open providing a pocket I5 on a garment I6. The pockets at the back may also be combined forming one pocket I'I on the back of a garment I8, as shown in Figure 3, and in this design one buttonhole I9 may be inside of the pocket, and the other, 20 above the pocket.
The lower edge of the garment may also be provided with an elastic band 2|, as shown in Figure 4, and a hem 22 at the lower edge may be extended upward as shown in Figure 2 to reinforce the lower portion of the garment and increase the wear thereof.
It will be understood that other changes may be made in the construction of the garment Without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the use of other fastening means in place of the buttons as shown and describe-d, another may be in the use of other nger holding means at the edges of the garn ment, and still another may be in the use of this fastening means at the crotch of a garment of any other type.
The construction of the parts will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the garment may be provided as shown and described and when in place upon the wearer, the tips of the fingers of the right hand may be placed in the pocket at the front, and those of the other hand in the pocket or pockets at the back, and by pressing downward with both sets of fingers the button-holes may readily be placed over the buttons and the edges fastened with comparative ease, and without bending the body or stretching the arms, and the garment may be unfastened With the same ease.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a garment of the type adapted to be fastened through the crotch, a strip on the outer surface of the front of the garment, a similar strip on the outer surface of the back of the garment, said strips positioned at the lower edges thereof and secured to the garment at their ends, the intermediate portions thereof being substantially free of the garment, fasteners carried on the outer face of the free intermediate portion of one of said strips, and cooperating fasteners on the portion of the garment covered by the other of said strips.
2. In a garment of the type adapted to be fastened through the crotch, a strip on the outer surface of the front of the garment, a similar strip on the outer surface of the back of the garment, said strips positioned at the lower edges of the garment and secured thereto at their ends only, the intermediate portions thereof being free of the garment, fasteners carried on the outer face of the free intermediate portion of the strip at the front of the garment, and cooperating fasteners on the portion of the garment covered by the strip at the back thereof.
