PORTABLE PUMP OR ANALAGOUS MACHINE AND SKID BASE OR SUPPORT THEREFOR Filed Oct. 24, 194i gwucm/too Char leaf. Lorggeweckqr,
Patented Jan. 19, 1943 PORTABLE PUMP OR AND SKID BASE OR FOR SUPPORT THERE- Charles I. Longenecker, Wauwatosa, Wis., assignor to Chain Belt Company, Milwaukee, Wis., a
corporation of Wisconsin 7 r Application october 24, 1941, Serial No. 416,400
, 6 Claims. (01.1280-19) The invention relates to portable machines, such for example as small portable power driven liquid pumps, and has for one of its objects to provide a simple, effective and relatively inexpensive skid base or support therefor, whereby the apparatus may be easily drawn over the ground to position it for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a base or support of the character indicated which may be quickly and inexpensively constructed, principally from sheet material, and to which the pump or other apparatus may be readily attached and detached. 7
Still further objects of the invention are to pro vide a sheet metal base .or support having reinforcing beads pressed or stamped therein, which also serve as ground-engaging runners; to provide a base or support which may, and preferably does, have an upturned forward end for facilitating its movement over the ground; and which is provided with means wherebya cord or rope such as is commonly supplied for starting the small internal combustion motors of the machines may be readily attached to and detached from the base and thereby also serve as a draft means for the apparatus.
With the above and other objects in View, which will be apparent from the following description and claims, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the said claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters designate like parts in all the views:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portable centrifugal liquid pump, mounted upon a skid base or support constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a as is shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the parts shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
The pump illustrated in Fig. 1 as representative of the apparatus to which the skid base of the invention is applicable is a well known commercial form of portable internal combustion engine driven self-priming centrifugal liquid pump, in which the pump 10 is provided with an intake connection H, a discharge connection l2 and an impeller (not shown) which is connected to and driven by the crank shaft of an internal combase or support such bustion engine l3, the crank case [4 of which is provided at opposite sides with lugsor feet l5 by means of which it may be secured to a support.
The present skid base or traversing support for such an apparatus comprises a sheet or plate l6 of metal or other suitable material, having a flat generally rectangular body portion I! which merges into a tapering forward portion l8 which is preferably curved upwardly approximately as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and3. A pair of spaced longitudinally extending downwardly facingvbeads 20 is. pressed, stamped or otherwiseformed in the body portion H, which beads preferably continue into the up-turned tapering forward portion [8, in general paralleling the lateral edges'of. the sheet or plate and meeting at 2 I. These beads not only reinforce the sheet or plate l6 against transverse bending, but those portions of them carried by the flat body portion ll act as ground-engaging runners and facilitate the movement of the apparatus over the ground surface by reducing the area of contact, as will be readily understood; and the portions of the beads extending into the upwardly curved forward end portion l8 tend to maintain its curve and prevent it from straightening out under the influence of pull exerted on the draft means.
Bars orstrips 22 may be secured, as by spot welding, or otherwise, to the upper surface of the body portion ll, spanning portions of the beads 20 as shown, and provided with apertures 23 suitably positioned to receive the bolts or screws 24 by means of which the feet or lugs l5 of the engine crank case may be detachably securedto the skid base.
A draft eye 25 is secured to the forward end of the up-turned portion [8, which eye may be conveniently formed from round rod into substantially the shape shown, with rearwardly divergent legs 26 which are spot welded or otherwise secured to the plate. The knotted end 21 of a draft cord or rope 28 may be introduced through the broad base portion 29 of this eye and then moved forwardly to engage the knots beneath the restricted forward portion of the eye, providing a simple and effective means whereby the draft cord or rope may be readily attached to and detached from the skid base. As above stated, this draft cord or rope may conveniently be the cord or rope usually furnishedand employed for starting the small internal combustion engines oom monly used in this type of apparatus, and the rope be thus utilized for dual functions.
Pumps of the type illustrated are frequently used under conditions wherein they of necessity struction as well as the precise arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore it isnot' wishedto be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A portable pump having a skid base or support comprising a plate of sheet material having a substantially flat body portion andan upwardly turned forward end portion, the-under surface of at least said body portion being provided 'with a-plurality of spaced beads for'reinforcing said portion against bending, said beads also constituting runners engageable with the surface of'the ground to facilitate movement of the apparatus thereover; and. means for connecting a draftmember to said base.
2 A portable pump having a skid base or support comprising a plate of sheetmaterial'having a substantially flat body portion and an upwardly curved forward end portion, the under surface of said plate being provided with a plurality of spaced. longitudinally extending beads for reinforcing both. of said portions against transverse bending, the portions of said beads located on the body portion of the plate also constituting runners engageable with the surface of the ground to facilitate traverse of the apparatus thereover; and means for connecting a draftmember tothe forward end portion of said base.
3. A portable power driven pump having a skid base or support comprising a sheet of material having a substantially flat body portion and an upwardly curved tapering forward end portion, said sheet having a downwardly pressed bead substantially paralleling the lateral edges of both of said portions to reinforce them against transverse bending, the portions of said beads located on the said body portion also constituting runners engageable with the surface of the ground to facilitate movement of the apparatus thereover; means carried by said body portion for the detachable securement of the pump apparatus thereto; and means for the readily detachable connection of a draft member to the forward end portion of said base.
4. As an article of manufacture, a skid base or support for a portable machine, comprising a plate of sheet material having a substantially flat body portion and an up-turned end portion, said plate having a plurality of longitudinal beads projecting from its lower surface to strengthen both of said portions against transversevbending, the parts of the beads located on the body portion also constituting runners, for engagement with the surface of theground to facilitate-movement of the apparatus thereover; and means for connecting a draft member to said base.
5. A skid base or support according to claim 4, wherein the draft member connecting means comprises an eye carried by the up-turned end portion, ,andprovided with an aperture having-a narrow portion and a broader portion, through the latter of which a knotted end of a draft cord or rope maybe passedand then moved to engage the knot with the narrower portion.
6. A skidbase or support according to claim 4, wherein the upper face of the body portion of the plate isprovided with members rigidly secured thereon to which the portablemachine may be fastened.
