11 Claims.
My invention relates to hoisting mechanism to actuate re ladders and elevators and more lfparticularly to extension ladders and elevators which may be mount-ed on portable trucks.
'Ihe application isa division of application iled Oct. 27, 1939, Serial Number 301,568, now Patent No. 2,249,900 dated July 22, 1941.
One feature of this invention consists in using a single motor to extend or lower the ladder and also to raise or lower a car mounted on the same.
Another feature is the selecting means whereby the motor can be thrown alternately -into or out of effective relation with the ladder or car.
Another feature is the method of locking the mechanism, so that the ladder and the car can be held in their adjusted positions independently of the motor.
Additional features will appear 'in the following description and annexed claims.

Fig. 1 is a front View of the hoisting mechanism, looking at Fig. 2 Afrom the left.

Similar numbers apply to the same par-ts throughout the several views.
The mechanism consists essentially of a pair of drums, one to raise or lower the ladder extension and the other to raise or lower a car, using the -ladder as tracks therefor, `both 'of which drums are mounted on the bottom section of Van extension ladder, and a single motor Yand a pair of clutching devices to throw the motor `into or aout of action With one -or the other or both drums.
The truck `I may be vof any well known ki-nd mounted on wheels, not shown. A motor, a shaft I3, journaled in the truck I, pivotally supports the lowest section 3 of the ladder, which for the purposes 'of this application may be constructed in any well known manner. A Worm Irl rmeshed with the worm Wheel -.I5 actuates the ladder -to be raisedor lowered. Slidably mounted `on the ladder 3, and its extensions is Ya fcar, not shown, eiective to be raised and lowered thereon to -bring -persons down from a burning building or to take firemen up or down .as re quired.
A motor 4, which may be supplied with an electric brake 5, is mounted on a pad 6 integral with a bracket 2 which is part of a frame 3l, which is bolted to the lowest section 3 of the ladder.
The motor shaft 'I drives a Worm 8, which is meshed in two worm wheels 9 and I0 normally iree to rotate Von shafts II and I2, respectively and held in position thereon by collars V39 secured to the shafts. Clutches I'I are slidably mounted on the shafts II and I2. The shafts II and I2 have keys I9 therein and the clutches Il have key ways not shown sliding on said keys I9. On each side of the clutches Il is a projection I8, one of which engages with a notch 38 in Ythe Worm wheel hub when moved to the right, in Fig. 1, .and the other of which engages With a ratchet tooth 22 on a hub I6 integral with a plate 24, when moved to the left. The plate 24 may be integral with the frame 3l and includes bearings for` the central part `of the Vshafts II and I2.
Engaged with each clutch Il is a yoke 20 diametrically spanning the same, and supplied with a centrally projecting pin 22 to enter a circumferential groove in the clutch Il. The yoke ,20 is operated byan integral lever arm 23 journaled by a pin 26 to a bracket 25 extending from the side of the plate 24.
vMounted on shaft lII is a drum 2l', and upon shaftl I 2 adrum V28; both drums are secured to their respective shafts. The drum 2l has a cable 29 wound on it, effective to raise or lower the car. The drum 28 has a cable 30 wound on it to raise or lower the ladder sections.
In operation, to raise lor lower the ladder sections V3 the clutch I'I is moved to the right, in Fig. 1, thus bringing one of the projections I8 into engagement with the Worm gear 9, thus rotating the drum in one direction or the other according to the direction Aof revolution of motor 4. Likewise the worm wheel I0 rotates the drum 28, when the clutch Il on the shaft I2 is Amoved to the right, in Fig. 1.
After the car or the ladder has been adjusted the desired height, the clutch II is moved to the left, in Fig. 1, thereby disconnecting the worm wheel from the shaft, and simultaneously engaging the other projection I8 on the clutch I'I with a stationary ratchet tooth 2v2, to lock and hold the car or ladder in adjusted position, independently'of the motor.
In order to be able to shift the clutches I'I away from the worm wheels, 9 and I0 into engagement with the teeth 22 lof the stationary .bosses I6, without clashing, the distance .from .the outer ends Vof the projections I8 on the two sides of the clutches l1 is less than the distance between the ratchet teeth 22 and the boss 39 of the worm wheels 9 and I0.
Many deviations from the details disclosed herein may occur to one skilled in this art, all of which would come within the scope and spirit of this invention. Having disclosed one method of embodying the same so that any one skilled in the art to which it pertains, can make and use the same, what I claim by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with an extension elevator including telescopic tracks, in sections, means to adjust the same for a car to move thereon, of mechanism to raise and lower the car, including a rotatable drum, a shaft on which the drum is mounted, a cable wound on the drum and connected to the car, a motor for rotating the drum, and clutch members to actuate the car, mounted on the shaft, including a reciprocating manually movable member mounted on the shaft and rotated thereby, mounted between a rotatable member on the shaft, driven by the motor, and a stationary member with which the reciprocating member engages for holding the same from rotating and thereby locking the car in xed position. Y
2. In combination with an extension elevator, including telescopic sections effective for a car to ride thereon as tracks, of mechanism to raise and lower said sections to the required height, and raise and lower the car the section including a pair of rotatable shafts, journaled in a frame secured to one of the sections, a drum with a cable wound thereon, secured to each shaft, one cable effective to raise and lower the section, and the other to raise and lower the car, a longitudinally movable clutch, keyed to and sliding on each shaft, a worm wheel freely rotatable on each shaft, a stationary ratchet mounted on the frame adjacent to the clutch, the latter having a projection on each side thereof, one of which is effective to engage the worm wheel when moved in one direction to rotate the shaft and the other to engage the ratchet if moved in the opposite direction to lock the shaft from rotating, a single worm meshed with both worm wheels mounted on a shaft and a motor also mounted on said shaft, effective to drive either or both drums selectively when engaged therewith by the clutches.
3. In combination with an elevator including tracks and a car movable thereon, of mechanism to raise and lower the car, including a rotatable drum, a shaft on which the drum is mounted and secured, a cable wound on the drum Aand connected to the car, a motor for rotating the shaft and clutch members to control the operation of said mechanism, including a reciprocating member mounted on the shaft and rotated thereby, a motor driven clutch member to engage the reciprocating member to rotate the shaft, when said member is moved in one direction and a stationary clutch member to engage the reciprocating member to lock the shaft from rotating when moved in the opposite direction.
4. The combination with an elevator having a car to be raised and lowered, of mechanism for actuating the car, including a shaft connected to said car, a motor for rotating the shaft, a longitudinally movable sleeve rotatable with said shaft, a pair of movable clutch elements assembled to said sleeve and a stationary clutch element effective to engage with one movable clutch element when the sleeve is moved in one direction to lock the shaft from rotating and a rotatable clutch element, driven by said motor, with which the second movable clutch element engages, to rotate the shaft, when the sleeve is moved in the opposite direction.
5. The combination with an elevator having a car to be raised and lowered, of mechanism for actuating the car, including a driven shaft connected to said car and a stationary clutch member, and a longitudinally movable sleeve keyed on said shaft, including a movable clutch member, to engage the stationary clutch member, for holding the shaft stationary when both clutch members are engaged. l
6. An elevator mechanism, including a shaft for actuating the same, a stationary member surrounding the shaft, a sleeve keyed on said shaft for rotation therewith and translation longitudinally thereof and cooperating means on said sleeve and said stationary member to lock the shaft from rotating when the sleeve is moved longitudinally on said shaft into engagement with said member.
7. An elevator mechanism, including a shaft for actuating the same, a frame in which said shaft is journaled, a stationary member included in said frame, a sleeve slidable on and rotatable with said shaft including means to lock the same to said member when brought into engagement therewith, to prevent the shaft from rotat ing.
8. An elevator mechanism, including a shaft for actuating the same, a frame in which said shaft is journaled, a stationary member 'surrounding the shaft included in said frame, a sleeve slidable on and rotatable with the shaft including means to engage said member effective to lock said shaft from rotating.
9. An elevator mechanism comprising a rotatable drum, a lifting cable wound on said drum, a shaft xed to said drum, means to rotatably support said shaft, a worm Ywheel rotatably mounted on said shaft, power-driven means to actuate said worm wheel, and clutch means to selectively interconnect said worm wheel and said shaft for common rotation, said clutch means comprising a clutch member slidably and rotatably mounted on said shaft and adapted to abut against said worm wheel, the facing surfaces of said worm wheel and said clutch member being mutually formed for cooperative'engagement.
l0. An elevator mechanism for a pivoted-extension ladder including a plurality of extensible sections and a traveling car, said mechanism comprising a pair of drums rotatably mounted on the underside of the lowermost section of said ladder, one of said drums having a cable for adjusting the relative position of the extensible sections of said ladder, the other of said drums having a cable for raising and lowering said car, and means Xed to said lowermost section to optionally drive either or both of said drums.
11. An elevator mechanism including a shaft for actuating the same, power-driven means to rotate said shaft, clutch means interposed between said power-driven means and said shaft, means to positively lock said shaft against rotation, and a single manually manipulatable shaft controlling means to selectively cause either said clutch or said locking means to be rendered effective.
