Description

Jan. 12, 1943. F. D; PALMER PACKAGE Filed July 1, 1940 Patented Jan. 12, 1943 Maryland Frank D. Palmer, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Sealtest, Inc., Baltimore, Md.,
a corporation of 7 Application July 1, 1940, Serial No. 343,383
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved package and more particularly to a package construction which is especially but not exclusively adapted to the packaging of products containing a considerable moisture content and which products are normally removed from the package in small quantities, the package being. provided with a reclosable cover and of such a nature that it may remain in use for an extended period of time. A typical package of the kind indicated is a face cream package.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a package of-the character indicated which will be of relatively simple construction but of attractive appearance so as to be well adapted to the packaging of such products as face cream; to provide a package which will .be relatively strong and durable so as to be capable of extended use without loss of its attractive appearance; to provide such a package with an access opening I afiording convenient means for removing small quantities of the packaged material; to provide prevent evaporation of moisture or handling of the content of the package while on display but which will afiordvisual examination of the packnomically and at lowest cost and which may be shipped or stored prior'to filling in knock-down or flat form; and in general it is the object of the invention to provide an improved package of.
the character indicated.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood by referenceto the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein there is illustrated a package embodying a selected form of the invention;
In the drawing:
, elongated strip of paperboard of suitable weight provided with suitable creasing, scoring or other --fold lines extending transversely thereof as indicated at 9, such fold lines being provided, in
this instance, to facilitate bending of the side wall same being of hexagonal, form and adapted tofit within the hexagonal body formedfasaforesaid. The cover member I0 is connected to the wall panel of the, body strip 6 by means oia narrow strip ll, suitable score lines indicated at In being provided to permit folding or bending of the in such a package a closure which will effectively cover l0 and strip ll relative to each other and relative to the side wall panel from which they extend. The cover I0 is alsoprovided at one edge with a lip extension' l2 which .is ioldable relative to the cover on a suitable 'score or fold line l3. The lip I2 is'provided for the purpose of facilitating opening of the cover as will presentlytappear. a v
'The. bottom'member 8 comprises a suitable paper board member cut to generally hexagonal form adapted to fit within the hexagonal wall member 6 and said bottom member is provided Fig. 1 is a perspective illustrating the completed package; v
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are plan views of the respective elements employed in forming, the improved tom member are folded downwardly and occupy positions in face'to face engaementf with therespectivelyiadiacent lower marginal portions of the side wall member 6. The flanges "and the adjacent portions of the side wall member 6 may be adhesively or otherwise secured together so as to ermanently maintain the bottom member 8 in assembled relation to the side wall member 6.
The top will I is also preferablyformed 01 a suitable weight of paper board and it, like the bottom member, is provided with peripheral flanges l6 which are foldable relative .to the top hexagonal shape of said top member.
The top member 1 is provided with an opening l8 through which access may be had to the content of the package and said opening is initially closed by means of a rupturable sheet of material 19. Said closing sheet l9 may be of suitable transparent material such as Cellophane, pliofilmor the like, and said sheet is of such size that marginal portions thereof extend beyond the edge of the opening I8 and such margin is preferably adhesively secured to the inside surface of the top member I.
As best shown in Figure 2, the top member I is disposed within the hexagonal body 6 and in inwardly or downwardly spaced relation to the upper end of the side wall member. The peripheral flanges l6 of the top member extend outwardly or upwardly in face to face relation with the adjacent upper marginal portions of the side wall member and they may be adhesively or otherwise secured to said side wall member so as to maintain the top member in assembled relation to the side wall member.
The cover element I is adapted to be folded,
I as shown in Figure 2, downwardly into face to -face engagement with the outside of the top member I, the narrow hinge strip ll permitting such positioning of the member Ill. The lip I2 is of such dimension that it projects slightly beyondthe upper edge of the side wall member 6 and thereby permits gripping thereof for facilitating withdrawal of thecover member l0. It will be observed that the cover member ID flts snugly within the side walls 6 and within the flanges ii of the top member I. The fit of the cover Ill within said flanges is preferably of a snug character so that the cover ID will be frictionally held in closed position.
' Retention of the cover in closed condition is furthermore assisted by the illustrated hinge connection between the cover and the side wall member. It will be observed that the normal and inherent resiliency of the paper board stock from which the member 6 and cover III are formed causes the hinge strip H to tend .to swing toward the center of the package and upwardly.
with the employment of the necessary apparatus for handling such adhesive is eliminated by app to the inner surfaces only of said top and bottom members I and 8 a coating of a suitable rubber or latex and parafl'in, or wax composition, many of which are commercially available, wherefore specific explanation of the composition appears unnecessary. Such compositions, due probably to their rubber content, provide much better adhesive properties than wax or ings on the respective flanges l6 and I4 engage the paraflin coating on the respectively adjacent side wall portions of the member 6.
By the application of heat or pressure or both.
quently causes the lip bearing edge of the cover to bear with corresponding force against the adjacent wall or-flange portion IS. The engagement between the lip bearing'edge of the cover "and the flange l6 induced in the manner explained, adds substantially to the frictional retention of the cover in closed position but never- .theless offers no objectionable resistance to opening of the cover. v
' For packages containing a moisture bearing product, the side wall'member 6 is preferably coated both on its inner and outer surfaces with paraflin, such coating being effected either before or after the member: is formed into its hexagonal form. The top and bottom members I and 8 are also desirably coated with a moisture proofing material and paraflin maybe employed for this purpose if desired. In connection with the employment of paraiiin coatings, the various adhesively united parts may be united by the application of heat or pressure or both to eflect ings are not entirely satisfactory in that they 'are not sufiiciently secure. Therefore, the employment of another adhesive is desirable. Ac-
cording to the present invention, the use of a separate adhesive for joining the various parts the contacting coatings may be effectively fused so as to produce an entirely satisfactory bond between the parts.
For joining the overlapping wall panel portions of the side wall member 6, the paraffin coatings alone may be relied upon, or, as preferred, other adhesive may be employed and the member formed into hexagonal form before applying the paraflin coating. If, however, it is preferred to coat the side wall member 6 before forming it into the band-like member, some of said rubberwax compositionmay be applied between the overlapping wall panels to produce a satisfactory adhesive connection therebetween.
In a package structure formed as explained, the paraffin coatings on the side wall member provide adequate moisture proofing for said side wall member and impart to the same a desirable glossed appearance which adds to the attractiveness of the package. The paraflin coating is, of course, also applied to the cover forming part l0 so that when the package is displayed the side walls and the top wall member, whether open or closed, disclose the same wax-polished appearance as the side wall member. The wax-rubber coatings on the inside surfaces only of the top and bottom members provide adequate moisture proofing therefor. v
'The rupturable closure is may be secured to the inside of the top wall 'I merely through the agency of said wax-rubber coating, suitable heat or pressure or both being applied to effect such union, or, if preferred, other adhesive may be employed for this purpose.
The described package structure may be shipped from the manufacturer to the user in unassembled fiat form embodying the relatively independent side wall member and top and bottom wall sections, or, if preferred, the carton manufacturer may'form the side wall member into an endless band by joining the end panel sections thereof in the manner already explained. When the side wall member 8 is initially formed into an annular band, it may nevertheless be shipped in flat condition by collapsing such band to fiat form by folding the same on an oppositely disposed pair of fold lines 9 as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The equipment required for assembling and adhesively uniting the various parts is obviously of very simple character so that no great expense is required in connection with such assembly.
v dling operations.
The packages may be filled from either end prior to the assembling of the corresponding end with the side wall member and it will be understood that the heat required (if any) for effecting the fusion of the adhesive coatings is not sufficient to impair the package content.
The described package structure is advantageous not only because of its simple but attractive character, but also because it eliminates relatively diflicult adhesive applying and han- Furthermore, the major portion of the package area is moisture proofed by employment of relatively inexpensive paraflin (as compared with considerably more expensive wax-rubber composition) so that the cost of the moisture proofing is maintained very low.
I am aware that changes in the described structure may be made without departing from the principles of the invention, the scop of which should be determined by reference to the following claims, the same being construed as broadly as possible consistent with the state of the art.
I claim:
