WILLIAM L. FISHER, OF SOUTH SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,763, dated August 3, 1880. Application filed June 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. FISHER, of South Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Coupler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic car-couplings of that general form in which a dog or tumbler holds up a shouldered pin until the dog is struck by the entering link, at which time the dog is removed from the shoulder of the pin and the latter falls of its own weight through the link to elfect the coupling of the cars.
My invention consists in so constructing the shouldered pin and the dog, and relatively arranging these parts in the draw-head that the shoulder on the pin not only affords a bearing for the dog in holding up the pin, but also, when the pin is down, serves as hearing which rests directly upon the rounded end of the link and holds thelatterin horizontal position while coupling with another draw-head, as hereinafter fully described.
Figurelis alongitudinal sectional elevation, showing the draw-bars in the act of being coupled. Fig. 2 is a plan view, tion, on line at 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents a draw-bar with mouth a flaring outward equally on the four sides from the narrow link-opening b, and with a cavity formed within the head of the draw-bar by removing the interior thereof on a downward slope, c, and an upward slope, cl from the link-opening b, which slopes or inclines extend inward to the rear of the aperturef, down through which the coupling-pin B is passed, while centrally in rear of the cavity caused by the slopes or inclines c d is a deep rectangular mortise or socket, g, which extends up through the bottom of the said draw-bar A and nearly to its top, for the accommodation of the dog 0 that holds up the coupling-pin B, and at h h the cavity is curved at the sides, to correspond with the shape of the ends of the coupling-link D.
The coupling-pin B has a rectangular head, It, rounded slightly on its face, a shank, I, havpartly in sec-.
ing a longitudinal slot, m, made transversely through it, and a downward-projectin g finger, n, that is designed to enter the coupling-link D, while the shoulder 0 of said pin B rests on the end of said link D.
A pin, E, is passed transversely through the draw-bar A and through the slot m of the coupling-pin B, in order to hold thelatter from lifting too high.
The dog 0 is pivoted on the pin 19, that passes transversely through the lower section of said draw-bar A, and said dog 0 has the lower end of its shank q enlarged into a bulbous or pearshaped downward and forward inclined projection, s, that serves by its weight and position to throw and hold the angular head r of said dog 0 forward beneath the descending coupling-pin B when the cars are uncoupled, and thereby hold said pin B in position for coupling.
A coupling-link, D, beingheldin place ready for coupling, as shown on the left in Fig. l, is entered into the opposite draw-bar, A, and, striking the dog 0 above its fulcrum, throws the head of said dog 0 back into the upper part of the socket g, and thereby releases the coupling-pin B, which coupling-pin B immediately falls with its finger a through the link D and its shoulder 0 resting on the end of said link D, thereby holding the cars coupled.
The pin B may be raised for the purpose of uncoupling the cars by means of levers or other device operated from the sides or top of the car.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the draw-head, chambered as described, the dog (J, pivoted on a horizontal axis and weighted to cause its up per end to move forward, the link D, and the coupling-pin B, slotted as described, and having a shoulder, 0, adapted to rest either upon the upper end of the dog or the inner end of the link, as, and for the purpose set forth.
\VILLIAM L. FISHER.
