No. 230,746. I Patented Aug. 3,1880.
INVENTOR WITNES ES WNW/p M4 Q ATTORNEY N- PEI'ERS. FHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGYON. ll. 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
GEORGE E. CLARK, OF BETHESDA, OHIO.
HAND-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,746, dated Application filed Mareh13,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. CLARK, of Bethesda, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Drills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure in the drawing is a side elevation of my improved hand-drill.
My invention relates to an improvement in hand-drills; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described, and partieularly pointed out in the claim.
The shaft to which the drill is secured is provided with a balance-wheel, and upon this shaft is loosely mounted a bar in which the shaft has a rotary movement. A cord passes from the upper end of this drill-shaft to the outer ends of the said bar. A coiled spring, F, is arranged around the shaft A, between the barD and the balance-wheel 0, one end of the spring being connected with the bar and the remaining end thereof with the wheel.
To operate the drill, either the said bar or the shaft is rotated until the cord is wound upon the drill-shaft, which operation raises the horizontal bar. By now rapidly depressin g the horizontal bar the cord will he unwound from the drill-shaft, which untwisting of the cord will rotate the shaft, and consequently effect the rotation of the drill and the unwinding of the spring. When the cord is unwound the momentum of the balance-wheel and the retractile power of the spring will cause a continuance of the rotary movement of the drillshaft, thus again winding the cord upon the said shaft. By now depressing the horizontal bar, as before, the drillshaft will be rotated in. a reverse direction, and so on.
Referring by letter to the drawing, A designates the drill-shaft, and B the drill, secured August 3, 1880.
thereto in any suitable way. 0 is the balancewheel upon the drill-shaft, and D is the rotary, and also sliding, bar, which is arranged to work upon the drill-shaft.
E is a cord which passes through the upper end of the drill-shaft and connects at its ends with the ends of the bar D. If desired, however, two cords may be used, one passing from one end of the bar D to the top end of the drill-shaft, and the other cord passing from the remaining end of the said bar to the top end of the drill-shaft in a similar manner.
F designates the coiled or spiral spring. This unwinds during the down movement of the bar, and when the bar has reached its lowest limit the retractile power of the spring insures the up movement of the bar and the rewinding of the cord upon the shaft. It also prevents the drill from jumping up during operation. The applicationof this spring to the well-known form of mechanical movement constitutes the only novel feature of my improvement. Without this spring it will require considerable care and experience to enable a person to operate the device without frequent stops.
What I claim is In a hand-drill comprising the rotary shaft A, carrying a balance-wheel, O, and the bar D, mounted loosely upon the said shaft and provided with a cord, E, conneetin g the outer ends of the bar with the upper end of the shaft, the spiral spring F, arranged around the shaft between the bar and the balancewheel, and connected at one of its ends with the bar and at its remaining end with the wheel, substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. CLARK.
