Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,072, dated March 1, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. S. Binoos, of Michigan Bluffs, county of Placer, and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Method of Amalgamating Gold with Quicksilver to be Used in Gold-Mining; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in completely saturating the riffies used in sluice boxes in placer mining with quicksilver so that the rifiles after being once charged will until completely worn out give in equal and uniform quantities of quick silver to the gold; also the quicksilver will be equally distributed over the whole surface where the water and gold will run.
To enable others skilled in the art to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and application.
Firstly I construct a hollow tube of steel or iron closed at the upper end and having a small round aperture at the lower end represented on the accompanying diagram by the letter A). Through this lower end or aperture I run a stop cock represented by letter On the lower end of the tube 1 fasten an inverted cup of steel with an aperture corresponding with the one in the tube (A); said cup being represented by letters (I), E, I).
The manner of applying the quicksilver to the wood of the ritlle is this: I place the lower edge of the inverted cup after first filling the tube (A) with quicksilverthrough the aperture (0), and closing the stop cock on the end of the riflie or wood and driving the same firmly into the wood. I then turn the stop cock and let the quicksilver fill the space between the bottom of the cup and the wood; then I close the stop cock and drive the cup as far into the wood as is necessary to completely fill the pores from end to end.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is-- The cup punch as constructed for saturating wood with quicksilver.
