6 Claims. (QL'255 -73) This invention relates to reamers and has par ticular reference to that type of reamer' adapted to be placed in a drilling string above the usual drill bit for drilling a well ho'le.
Each of these cutters is'carried on a bearing shaft 6, which in the example shown is made integral with asupportihg block I inthe lower auxiliary recess. The upper end .of. each suchshaftt 'is' It is an objectof this invention .to provide such g carrie'dlin a second'supp'orting block 3 mounted in a reamer in which the learner cutters may be readily removed and replaced. f j
Another object is to provide such a structure in which the removal and replacement ofthe cutters will not necessitate the use of any special tools whatever. I
A further object is to provide a structure in which no bolts or threaded parts are required.
A still further object is to provide such a structure which will be so sure .in its operation that the reamer cutters will be 'firmlyjand rigidly mounted upon the reanier body and'will not be the upper auxiliary recess .4. These supporting blocks are-located properly with. respect to the major 'recess .by means (of pins .9 extending through transverse openings It in the body of the T5 wedge-shaped opening on its end remote from the come loosened or lost in use, but in which they may be easily and quickly removed and replaced.
Other objects and advantages of. this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein one embodiment of this invention is illustrated. I I
In' the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a reamer constructed with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal cross section through the bodly of the reamer shown inFighl taken along-the axis of one of the reamer cut"- ters and showing the means for. mounting the same on the reamer body; I
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross section through the structure shown in Fig. 1 taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the structure shown in Fig. 1 taken along the line 4.-'4
of Fig. 1.- u p The body l of the reamer shown in the drawing is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced major recesses 2, each of which has an auxiliary recess 3 adjacent its lower end anda secondary auxiliary recess 4 adjacent its upper end, these auxiliary recesses opening into the major recess.
Each of the auxiliary recesses Sand 4 has adjacent the major recess a portion of trapezoidal cross section. The auxiliary recess 3 also has a portion more remote from the major recess which is not a trapezoidal cross section but which is of a width substantially equal to the widest dimension of that portion which is of trapezoidal cross section. I 7 N This reamer is provided with three roller cutters 5, each mounted in one of the ma or recesses 21 55 cutter., Received in'this' opening in each of the blocks is a wedge H, which when driven home serves to spread the prongs of. the bifurcated pore tion'of each block'and'wed'ge it tightly in place. At the same time, eachof these wedges is provided on its nosewith a slot H of a width adapted to straddle a reduced intermediate portion I3 of one of the pins9'. Thus, when the wedge H is in A place the pin 9 which cooperates with the same Q5 supporting block cannot be withdrawn.
After the wedges H are driven home by means of a hammer or the like, they are secured in place by of the respective supporting blocks. These portions [4 are bent inwardly around the bases of the respective wedges so as to prevent them from coming but.
serting it through the'major recess 2 'into the lower portion of the upper auxiliary recess 4. The cutter 5 will then be put in place in the major recess and the lower supporting block I inserted through the lower portionof the lower auxiliary recess 3. When in. this position the shaft 6 will extend upwardly into the major recess and the lower block and shaft may then be pushed upwardly through the cutter 5 until the upper end .of the. shaft fits into the upper supporting block 8,.as shown in Fig. 2. The pins 9 are now put in position-and the wedges l I driven into the Wedgeshaped openings in the respective supporting blocks 1 and 8', after whichvthe portions [4 will be bentinwardly behind the wedges to hold them in place.
It will be seen from the foregoing that by the" In'mounting the reamercutter in the reamer 35 body in accordance with this invention, the upper supporting. block 8 will first be put in place by inrigidly mounted in a reamer body in such a manner that it cannot be readily displaced therefrom in use nor can it become loosened so as to impair the action of the reamer. At the same time it will be readily observed that such cutter can be mounted in the reamer body and removed therefrom at will with no special tools and without the necessity for even such tools as wrenches or the like. There is no threaded part and nothing which can be readily damaged in handling to such an extent that it cannot be used.
Having described my invention, I claim:
