WfA. WRIGHT. Stub Cutter and Slicer.
No. 230,516. Patented July 21,1880..
HMUIIIIIIIHII- l UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF UENTBETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT IO JOSEPH B. DE YOUNG AND CHAS. Z. DE YOUNG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STUB CUTTER AND SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,516, dated July 27, 1880,
A Application filed May 6,1880. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Oentreton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stub Glitters and Slicers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying' drawings, in which- Figure 1 Iis a vertical section of the slicer and cutter embodying my invention in line a2 w, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top or plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a View of the cutter detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for cutting and slicing stubs in fields preparatory to plowing.
The nature of said invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the adjusting devices of the other parts of the machine.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame, which is mounted on wheels B and provided with a drivers seat, G.
To the horizontal cross-piece a, at the front of the frame, is fitted a vertically-slidin g shaft, D, whose lower end carries a horizontallyarranged cutter, E, which may be a single I' 3o blade, a circular blade, or a toothed blade,
as desired. 011 said shaft D is fitted, by means of a feather or spline, a horizontal bevel-wheel, F, which gears with a bevel-wheel, G, having a horizontal shaft, the outer end of 3 5 which carries a pinion, b, which meshes with a toothed wheel, o, fixed to one of the wheels B.
H represents a treadle, which is pivoted to the frame A, and rests on the top ofthe shaft D, and projects so as to be conveniently de- 4o pressed bythe feet of the driver from the seat C. Y
On the shaft D is fitted a spring, J, which bears against a pin or shoulder at the top of the shaft and the bevel-wheel F, or some suitable portion of the frame A, the object of the spring being to elevate the shaft and consequently the cutter E.
To the frame A there is pivoted a rotary shaft, K, which occupies a position in the rear of the shaft D, and carries vertically-arranged slicing-blades L. A lever, M, is connected to said shaftk, for raising and loweringtheblades L, and occupies a position adjacent to the drivers seat.
Projecting horizontally from the lower part of the frame A are clearer-teeth N, the blades L being located between said teeth.
The operation is as follows: rPhe apparatus is drawn forward by animal or other power, rotation being thereby communicated to the 6o cutter E. When the stubs are about to be reached the treadle H is depressed, thus bringiu g the cutter in proper position for service, after which the cutting of the stubs is readily occasioned. The lever M is also operated so as to lower the slicing-blades L, whereby the portion of the stubs remaining in the ground is subjected to the action of said blades, and thus split or separated in a perpendicular direction, preparatory to plowing or 7o overturning. When the blades are raised the teeth N clear them ofclods, stubs, Snc., and thus keep them in proper condition for subsequent service. When the treadle H is released the shaft D is raised by the spring J, and the cutter E thus elevated, it beingv noticed that while the shaft rotates with the wheel Fit rises and falls without interfering with the rotation of the wheel.
. If desired, a clutch may be provided for 8o rendering the gearing inoperative when the cutter E is not required for service.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cutter E, connected to the rising-andfalling shaft l), in combination with the feathered gear-wheel F, spring J, and treadle H, and with suitable gearing operated by the wheel or wheels B, substantially as and for 9o the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a rotary stub-cutter adapted to act horizontally, a series of slicers adapted to out vertically, said cutter and Slicers being independently adjustable, substantially as set forth.
WM. A. WRIGHT.
