This invention relates to attachments for the frames of automobile windshields, and one object is to provide such an attachment with means for securing the same in place and with means for mounting or otherwise securing to the attachment any cards, placards, photographs, or legendbearing devices.

One purpose for which the attachment ma be applied, consists inmounting a legend such as Drive carefully in the lower or horizontal member of the attachment, and mounting photographs of members lof the drivers family in the upright member thereof. By virtue of the position of these signs, as they might be termed, being at all times before, and readily visible to the driver, his attention will be repeatedly, if not constantly, arrested thereby, and they should have the effect of checking any tendency to careless or reckless driving. It is believed that such reminders will tend to prevent many accidents by exercising a restraining effect upon the driver always to act cautiously so as to prevent a possible accident.

The attachments might obviously be put to uses other than that above-outlined, and it is therefore not desired nor intended to limit the application of the invention to any particular use to the exclusion of other possible uses.

The above and other objects will become apparent Vin the description below, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. The drawings are intended to'serve the purpose of illustration only, and it is notv intended nor desired to limit the invention in any manner to the specific details of construction shown eX- cepting as may be required within the scope of the invention and of the appended claims.

Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary elevational View of one type of an automobile windshield and adjacent parts, as seen from a position in the front seat of the vehicle, showing one form of' the attachment applied thereto. Y

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral II indicates a windshield ofthe divided or peaked type, having the frame or moulding I2 along the base thereof, the mouldings I3 along the sides thereof, and the moulding I4 along the top thereof. The^ center bar or moulding I5 of the windshield frame, which divides the windshield into two equal halves at an angle to each other, rises between the mouldings l2 and I4.

The attachment applicable to this form of windshield frame comprises a center or upright member I6 securable to the bar i5 in any desired manner, as, for instance, by means of spring clips I'I which embrace the bar; and a pair of lateral or base members I8 and I9 extending from the lower end of the member I6 andfalso attachable to the moulding I2 by similar clips I'I. The lower end of the member I6 is bendably attached to a plate or the like 20, by means of a hinge 2l, and the lateral members I8 and IS are likewise attached to the sides of the plate 20 by means of hinges 22. Each of the members I6, I8, and I9 comprises a body 23 bellied as shown to conform to the contour of the moulding to which it is attached. The opposed lateral edges 24 of each of these bodies 23 are doubled back to form yieldable guides 24 whereby a placard 25 or cards or photographs 26 may be mounted on the body 23 and'yieldably retained therein. The placard or placards may bear a legend, such as"Drive carefully, and the cards or photographs may bear any suitable representations or pictures.

It, lis to be noted that when this attachment has been mounted against the windshield frame, itdoes-not in any manner-obstruct the vision of the driver, yet the visible signs, pictures, or the like mounted therein are at all times before and readily visible to the driver,

The members IS, I8, and I9 are hinged to the plate 20 so that the device may be deformed as necessary to accommodate the outline of the particular windshield fran-ie' to which it' is to be attached. This is de'sir'able'- because the various manufacturers-- YVmodels of automobiles differ in their angular measurements for the divided type of windshields.

The windshield shown in Figure 2 is the undivided or straight, flat type, which is more commonly found on older models of automobiles. Herein the lower horizontal section of the windshield frame or moulding is shown at 21, surrounding the glass 28, The attachment comprises a base member 29 which is xed to the frame section 21 by any suitable means, such as the spring clips 30, similar to the clips I1. An upright member 3| is hinged at 32 to the member 29, and this member is urged back against the surface of the glass by a pair of spring fingers 33 anchored in the member 29 and insertable into holes 34 in opposed sides of the member 3|. The lateral edges of the member 3| may be provided with yieldable ears 35 so that cards or photographs may be held against the surface of the member 3|. The visible surface of the member 29 may have any suitable legend or legends printed or pasted thereon. (In Figure 10 the spring linger 33 is shown bent forcibly to the left, simply for the sake of clarity.)

The form of attachment shown in Figure 3 is somewhat similar to that of Figure 2, in that the visible surface of the lower or base portion is adapted to have legends pasted or printed thereon; otherwise it is of the type suitable for divided windshields. It comprises the upright member 36, provided with card mounting clips 31, and hinged at its lower end at 38 to the plate 39. The base members 40 and 4| are hinged at 42 and 43, respectively, to the plate 39, and are secured to the lower members 44 of the windshield frame by means of the clips 45. The upright member 36 is similarly secured by clips 45 against the dividing bar 43 of the windshield frame. This form is, obviously, also adjustable to the particular angularity of the divided windshield frame to which it may be attached.

The form of attachment shown in Figure 4 is somewhat similar to that shown in Figure 1 excepting that it is intended for the straight, at type of undivided windshield, It comprises the lower or base member 41 which is attached, as by the clips 48, tothe lower section 48a of the windshield frame. Excepting for a small area in the center of the member 41, its opposed edges 49 are doubled back, in the same manner as above-described, to provide yieldable retaining means for placards or cards mounted on the member, the visible surface 50 of which is bellied in the same manner as the surface 23 above-described, in order to fit the contour of the frame 5 48a. The upright member 5| is similarly formed, having the bellied surface 59 and the doubleback ears 49. The member 5| is hinged at 52 to the member 41, and an inverted U-shaped spring 53, whose ends are anchored in the member 41, normally urges the member 5| against the glass 54.

It is apparent from the above that an attachment has been provided for windshield frames, whereby legends, placards, pictures, or notices of all kinds may be conveniently mounted before the driver where they will be visible to him at all times without in any manner interfering with his clear vision of the road. VMeans has also been provided for making the attachment applicable to any common or standard type of windshield frame. And since provision has also been made for yieldably mounting any article of the type mentioned in the attachment, it is apparent that `such articles may be readily removed or replaced fil) by others. Likewise, the attachment itself may be readily removed, if and when desired.

Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

l. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, a pair of mutually joined members attached to said base sections, an upright member pivoted to and extending from said members at the junction of said members, means for attaching said members to said sections, and means for attaching said upright member to said bar, said members having means for mounting cards or the like thereon.

2. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, an upright member having means for attaching the same to said bar, a plate hinged to the lower end of said member, a pair of members attached to said base sections and hingedly attached to said plate, and means for attaching said pair of members to said sections, said members having means for mounting cards` or the like thereon.

3. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the Windshield into two equal sections, an upright member having means for attaching the same to said bar, a plate hinged to the lower end of said member, a pair of members attached to said base sections and hingedly attached to said plate, and means for attaching said pair of members to said sections, said members having the bodies thereof bellied, said members having means for mounting cards or the like thereon.

4. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, an upright member having means r for attaching the same to said bar, a plate hinged to the lower end of said member, a pair of members attached to said base sections and hingedly attached to said plate, means for attaching said pair of members to said sections, and means for mounting cards or the like on said members.

5. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, an upright member having means for attaching the same to said bar, a plate hinged to the lower end of said member, a pair of members attached to said base sections and hingedly attached to said plate, and means for attaching said pair of members to said sections, said attaching means comprising spring clips on said pair of members adapted to embrace said sections, said members having means for mounting cards or the like thereon.

6. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central upright bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, a pair of mutually joined members attached to said sections, an upright member extending from said members at the junction of said members, means for attaching said members to said base sections, and means for attachingsaid upright member to said bar, said members having means for mounting cards or th'e like thereon.

7. In combination with the base sections of the frame of a divided windshield having a central substantially upright .bar dividing the windshield into two equal sections, a substantially upright member having means for attaching the same to said bar, a pair of members pivotally secured to the lower end of said upright member and adapted to be mounted against said base sections, said members having means for mounting cards or the like thereon.

8. The device set forth in claim 7 wherein said means for attaching said upright member to said bar comprises a pair of opposed complementary spring fingers adapted to' releasably clamp against the sides of said bar, said members having means for mounting cards or the like. thereon,
