My invention relates to sinks, and particularly to the kitchen type of sink, having a resilient top provided around the sump thereof.
Heretofore in the art, sinks of the unit type were cast or formed from metal and enameled or otherwise provided with a hard finish on the top or drainboard portions about the sump. Dishes were chipped or often broken when stacked on the hard surfaced drainboard before and after washing.
In practicing my invention, I form a unit sink from metal and cover the drainboard area and the splashboard portion with a mat made of cork, rubber, or other material or composition thereof, to provide a resilient top on which the dishes may be stacked. The sink is constructed from a sheet of material having a hole stamped means on the outer side thereof.
After the mat is secured to the metal surface, the splashboard portion is broken upwardly from the drainboard portion. Inwardly of the edges of the mat a ,slot is provided to receive a downwardly extending flange of a molding strip. The molding strip arches upwardly from the mat and is curved downwardly along the flange of the main stamping and flanged inwardly to mate with the inwardly projecting flange thereof. The inwardly projecting flange of the molding strip is split to form tabs which may be bent upwardly to anchor the molding'to the main stamping. In the front comers of the drainboard portion and at the top of the splashboard portion a miter joint is provided in the molding. The space between the side flanges of the main stamping remaining after the splashboard was bent upwardly is bridged by a corner plate and comer moldings join the side moldingstrip of the drainboard and splashboard portions which are secured to the corner plates.
Accordingly, the main objects of my invention are: to form a unit sink from a metal stamping and cover the drainboard and splashboard portions with a unit mat which is trimmed at the edge with a molding; to form a sink from a top stamping having a sump opening therein to which a mat is adhered having a sump supported by and sealed to the mat, the edge of the mat and stamping being trimmed with a molding; to form a sink of a stamping having a sump opening therein to which a mat is secured and formed with stamping to provide a splashboard, afterwhich a sump is applied to the opening in the mat and stamping having a belled edge resting in a rabbet in the mat, with the edges of the mat and stamping finished with a molding strip which projects thereover; of forming a sink from a stamping having a mat applied to its topsurface'with a slot provided inwardly of the edge of the mat and a rabbet about the sump opening in which a sump is supported with a molding projecting above the mat and flanged over and downward to project within said slot; and, in general, to provide a unit sink constructionhaving a drainboard and splashboard portion coveredby a mat which is simple in construction, economical of manufacture, and pleasing in appearance.
Other objects and features of novelty of my invention will be either specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of my invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sink bodying features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken plan view of the sink illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 3-3 thereof;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of structure illustrated Fig. 2, taken on the line 4-4 thereof; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 4, taken on the line 5-5 thereof.
In Fig. 1, I have illustrated a sink comprising a base stamping 9 covered by a mat in and flanged outwardly at I I to form a splashboard. An opening I2 is provided in the stamping 9 in which a sump l3 having a belled end It is mounted. A rabbet I5 is formed in the edge of the mat about the sump opening while a rabbet i5 is formed in the underside of the belled edge of the sump 13 which mates with the rabbet l 5 in the mat. It is to be understood that the rabbet IS in the edge of the sump may be omitted when the mat is thicker than the sump. The stamping 9 is flanged inwardly at I8 at the edges and the flange is flanged inwardly at l9 at the bottom. The flanges l8 and I9 at the sides are slotted along the line of break between the drainboard portion 2| and the splashboard portion II.
The mat l0 may be a sheet of linoleum, cork, rubber, or similar composition which is sound proof and which preferably embodies some resiliency. Channel members 22 extend under the drainboard portions 2| of the stamping to which they are welded to provide reinforcement.
Spaced tabs 23 are provided on the underside of the drain opening for supporting bolts 24 which secure locking plates 25 in position. The sump I3 is provided with side plates 26 which are outwardly flared at 21, at the top, for receiving the locking plates 28 which draw the sump I 3 downwardly when the bolts 24 are tightened, against a waterproof adhesive 28 which seals the edge of the sump to the mat.
Near the outer edges of the mat a slot 28 is provided into which the downwardly projecting end SI of a molding 32 projects. The molding arches upwardly at 33 from the mat to prevent water fromrunning of! the mat ll onto the floor. The
moldin'g 'isflanged inwardly at 33 over the flange ll of the'stamping and is split throughout its length to form-tabs 34, some of which are bent upwardly afteras'sembly to lock the molding 32 over the flanges I8 and ll! of the stamping. The front comers 35 of the molding are mitered the same as the top comers 36 of the splashboard I I.
While I have stated that the front comers of the molding, as well as the top corners 35 and 36, respectively, are mitered, it is to be understood that the comer may be mitered only at the top portion and the horizontal face at the corner formed by a suitable tool so that the molding across the front and the sides is a unit,
the same as the top portion which forms a unit with its side portions. A gusset plate 38 spans the flange portions l8 at the corner between the splashboard portion ii and the main stamping i and is welded thereto as illustrated more specifically in Figs. 4 and 5. The gusset plate 38 may be offset at 39 to provide clearance for the overlap portion of the molding when such overlap is material. The molding 32 is offset at H on the ends of the U-shaped portions which are spaced at the comers. Corner stampings l2 join the ends of the molding at the comers and project over the corner gusset 38 to which they are secured by tabs 34. The unitary molding is readily applied to the front and top edges of the assembly and sprung over the sides and retained in position by the tabs 34. The corner stamping '42 assists in clamping the molding in position and forms a junction between the two U-sh'aped molding elements at the comers.
The composite sink as illustrated and described in detail is unique in providing sanitary joints between the various elements which go to make up the unit construction. The application of the mat to the top of the stamping before the splashboard portion is bent upwardly provides compression to the mat material and a smooth joining surface. The use of the mat materially reduces the chipping and breaking of glassware and dishes which occurs on drainboards and sinks which are made of metal and enamel or otherwise finished. A drainboard is provided about the sump by the molding which extends above the mat at the edges of the stamping. A sanitary joint is provided between the bell end of the drain and the rabbet of the mat in which the sump is supported and sealed by a waterproof adhesive. 1
While I h'ave described and illustrated but a single embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, omissions, additions, and substitutions may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sink including a metal stamping forming a drainboard portion and a splashboard portion, a mat disposed on the surface of said board portions, a sump projecting through an aperture in the drainboard portion and mat and forming a seal with the mat upon which it is supported,

2. A sink formed from a stamping providing a horizontal portion with a sump opening and a portion projecting upwardly therefrom forming a splashboard, a mat of resilient material on said splashboard and drainboard, a sump having a bell end supported on said mat and sealed thereto when projecting through said opening, a molding about the frontand side edges of said drainboard portion, a molding about the top and side edges of said splashboard portion, and cornerelements joining said two portions.{*""
3. A sink including a stamping having a sump opening therein, a mat secured to said stamping, said mat and stamping being thereafter bent upwardly as a unit to form a horizontal drainboard portion and a, vertically projecting splashboard portion, the mat about said opening h'aving a rabbet therein, a sump which projects through the opening and having a bell-end which forms a seal with said rabbet upon which the sump is supported, and a trim molding about the edge of said drainboard and splashboard portions.
4. A stamping forming the base portion of a sink embodying a sheet metal flanged downwardly at the edges which is separated at the junction between the drainboard and splashboard portions, a mat of resilient material secured to the top surface of said stamping, said mat and stamping having an aperture therein for a. sump, the stamping and mat being formed as a unit at to have the splashboard portion extend in a vertical plane, a sump having a bellend which rests upon the mat when projected through said opening to form a seal therewith, means for drawing said sump downwardly against said mat, and a molding disposed about the edge of said drainboard and splashboard portions for covering the flange thereof.
5. A stamping forming the base portion of a sink embodying a sheet of metal flanged downwardly at the edges which is separated at the junction between the drainboard and splashboard portions, a mat of resilient material secured to the top surface of said stamping, said mat and stamping having an aperture therein for a sump, the stamping and mat being formed as a unit at 90 to have the splash'ooard portion extend in a vertical plane, a sump having a bellend which rests upon the mat when projected through said opening to form a seal therewith, means for drawing said sump downwardly against said mat, said mat inwardly of its edges being provided with a slot, and amolding having an overturned portion the edge of which projects downwardly into said slot to provide a projecting rim about the edge of the drainboard and splashboard portions.
6. A sink including a metal stamping having a sump opening therein, a resilient mat disposed on the surface of said stamping and secured thereto, said mat and stamping being thereafter bent upwardly as a unit to form a horizontal drainboard portion and a vertically directed splashboard portion, a sump having a bell end with the sump portion projecting through said opening in the drainboard portion and mat and having the bell end resting upon and forming a seal with the mat, and a trim molding about the ends of said drainboard and splashboard portions having a portion engaging the face of the mat.
