Patented Nov. 24, 1942 um'reo STAT- s PATENT OFFICE "AUTOMATIC VSQIPHON BREAKER FOR Y FLUSH VALVES V I Joseph J. Goodrie, Chicago, 111., assignor of' twenty-five per cent to Albert J ."Fihe'; Chicago,
Application July v 119, 1941, Serial No. 403,193
. I Claims.
This invention relates to an improved automatic siphon breaker for; flush valves, and the present invention constitutes an improvement over my prior patents onsimilar devices, one entitled Unitary flush valve connection, No. 2,134,182, granted October 25, 1938, and the other entitled ,Fixed vacuum breakers for flush valves,
No. 2,151,200, granted March 21,1939. I V
One of the important objects of this invention istoprovide means for breaking the siphon or vacuum which is sometimes created in water systems of buildings, particularly taller buildings when the water pressure is shut ad or reduced andwhich would ordinarily have a tendency to carry flush ,water from toilet bowls or the like back into the system. Another object of, the invention is to provide a device that can be used interchangeablyzon all types of flush valves for toilet bowls, laboratoryequipment, hospital apparatus or the like.-
It is known to be trueespecially in the larger buildings that, when the main water supply is shut off for some reason or another, a suctionor vacuum is created when a faucet, valve or the- Still another important object-of the invention is to have no moving parts therein which may stick throughdisuse or which may have dirt collect thus causing the movement to stop.
Another and still further object of the invention includes the provision of means whereby the flow of incoming water to the toilet bowl or other similar equipment will always be under control. In installations of this sort, it often happens that the water from toilet bowls or similar equipment such as various apparatus in hospitals, laboratories and the likeis drawn upwardly and outwardly therefrom back into the main water line, this occurring quite frequently when the water supply is shut off for some reason or another, whereupon the opening of a faucet or valve at some lower level will immediately create a suction or back pressure, and unless some means exists in the inlet pipe for breaking such a vacuum,
the contaminated waste water from the toilet 65 One Side adjacent the upper P thereof, and
line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction bowl or other apparatus is drawn back into the main supply line whence it is then delivered tov other outlets and may inadvertently be used for drinking or other purposes, thereby constituting a serious detriment to health.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawing and following specification. 7
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustratedinthe drawing and hereinafter more fully described. 7 a
Inthedrawing; Q U
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved automatic siphon breaker of thisinvention,
Figure 2 ,is a sectional view takenon the line 22 of Figure 1, showing the interior construction of the device. I
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken o-nthe indicated.
, Figure 4 is a partial section and parts being broken away taken on the broken line 4-4 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 5 isa side view of the improved automatic siphon breaker for flush valves of this invention.
, As shown in the drawing: Y
The reference numeral lllindicates generally the casing of the improved automatic siphon breaker of this invention, the same being provided at its top with an attachment l2 whereby the device may be connected into a pipe line or the like, and the body I 0' is screw-threaded at its lower end as shown at 44 for a similar connection at this point. I
The casing ill has an inside element l6 which forms an inner wall and divides the easing into two ,parts, each comprising a passageway for water. i l
The central passageway includes a restricted pipe or nozzle element I8 which is screw-threadedly mounted in position in a ledge 20 integral withthe' casing l0 andwhich is shapedas shown to provide a constricted stream when water flows therethrough.
Just below the ledge or element 20, there is fashioned. in the casing I!) an opening or slot 22 which is for the purpose of allowing incomingv atmospheric air for siphon breaking action.
A plug 24 is removably mounted below the element I8 and also has a restricted passageway therethrough as best illustrated in Figure 2.
The casing I0 is provided with an opening at this is normally closed by means of a plug 26 which is screw-threadedly mounted therein by an adjusting screw or the like 28. This screw is held in desired position by means of a lock nut 30 and a cap 32 is provided over the assemblage in order to keep out dirt or other foreign material. Adjacent the inner end of the adjusting screw 28 is a valve element 34 hingedly mounted on a pin or the like 36 and adapted to operate against a seat 38 formed in the body of the casing H].
In operation, the device is placed in position below a flush valve and above an ordinary toilet bowl or in some similar relationship with a or other similar apparatus. In operation, water enters the top of the device, andsnie er-it passes through the restricted passage 1 8 and the element 24. The main operation of the water opens the valve 34 and flows through the passageway between the walls lll and I6 of the casing providing a desirable flushing action for the toilet bowl or similar device. The set screw 28 can be so adjusted that the valve 34 will open a desired amount, and the plugs l8 and 24 with the passageway therethroughcan be removed, and other plugs with differently sized or shaped passageways substituted depending upon'the particular type of system with which the device is to be used such as, for example, a high pressure or a low pressure system for flush valves or similar devices.
N0 splashing or other undesirable excretion of water will take place through the slot 22 because the nozzle I8 is so shaped and situated that this is rendered practically impossible.
On the other hand,- if a; vacuum or suction is created in the feed pipe leading to the device, this suction or vacuum will be immediately broken by the entry of atmospheric air throug the slot 22, and there will consequently be no siphoning action of water from the toilet bowl or similar deviceup through the hush valve and into the parts andconsequently', can, under practically no circumstances; ever get out or order. Furthermore; the device can be readily adjusted or changed to accommodate inany'and various types offlush bowls and flushing systems with-a very small expenditure or time and labor andwith practically no extra parts or substituted parts.
I am awarethat many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore;- do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the-prior art.
I claim as my invention 1-. An automatic siphon-breaker for flush valve.'

an adjustable stop in juxtaposition with the valve,
andnozzle means in the central part of the casing 'for'pfdvidin'g' a restricted flow of the remainder of the water stream through said central part together with a slot open to the atmosphere adjacentthe nozzle.
