points at which the drawing compound was applied to the sheet metal was largely a matter of guesswork. Because of this large quantities of drawing compound were wasted and much sheet metal stock was wasted owing to breakage of the stock resulting from improper application of v the drawing compound.
It is an object of this invention to produce a drawing compound applicator for sheet stock which effects considerable economies in the application of the drawing compound and which applies the drawing compound in the proper amount and in the locations on the sheet metal stock where it is needed to eliminate breakage of the stock.

Fig. l is a view partly in section of the entire assembly for automatically applying drawing compound to the sheet stock with the reciprocating die member of the press about to begin its down stroke.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l. with the reciprocating die member at the end of its down stroke.
Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing there is shown a conventional press comprising a lower or stationary die member I and an upper or reciprocating die member 2. commonly rcferred to as the punch. The die member 2 reciprocates vertically in the conventional and well-known manner.
It is proposed to have the drawing compound applicator controlled by, or driven from any rotating or reciprocating or otherwise movable member of the press. By way of illustration the drawing compound applicator herein is shown controlled or driven by the die member 2. The applicator comprises a supply tank 3 for the drawing compound 6 which is connected by pipe line 5 with the interior of cylinder 6.
A check valve I2 is inserted in pipe line 5.

This check valve opens on the intake or up stroke of the piston 8 and closes on the discharge or down stroke of the piston 8. The cylinder ii is connected with the manifold !3 by means of a flexible line It.
A check valve 55 is mounted in line H! which opens on the down or discharge stroke of the pistan 3 and closes on the up or intake stroke of the piston it. Check valve iii serves primarily to prevent the drawing compound or lubricant from leaking from the manifold between strokes of the press.
The manifold i3 is mounted on the die member 2. If desired, the manifold 53 can. be built into the die member 2. The manifold I3 is provided with a plurality of outlets or leads 86 through which the drawing compound is sprayed'on to the metal sheets ll preparatory to drawing th same. Each outlet it isprovided with a pet-cock [8 so that the flow' of drawing compound can be regulated. The outlets it will be positioned in the manifold to direct the drawing compound on to the metal sheet ll so as to effect a proper distribution of the drawing compound. By means of the pet-cocks It the flow of lubricant from any lead Hi can be completely shut off or partially shut off or closed to control the amount of draw-' ing compound applied to any particular part of the metal sheet H. In other words, the petcocks 4% enable one to distribute the drawing compound upon the sheet I! in the areas and in the amount needed for each area to effect proper drawing of the sheet ll. 7 i
In operation the piston 8 travels up and down with. the die member 2. On the up stroke of the die member 2 the piston a'draws drawingcompound from the reservoir through line 5. by check valve 52 into the cylinder 6. On the down stroke of the die member 2. piston 8 ejects the drawing compound from cylinder 6. through line M, by check valve l5 into the distributing manifold it, through pet-cocks l8 on to the metal sheet I! before the die member 2 draws the metal sheet i! into the form desired. The position of the die member 2 and the parts of the drawing compound applicator at the end of the down stroke of the die member 2 is illustrated in Fig. 2.
I claim: 7
1. In combination with a press for stamping a sheet metal blank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, one of said members being adapted to receive a sheet metal blank before the blank is stamped on said press, a, reservoir for drawing compound, and mechanism including a nozzle,
said nozzle being mounted on the other of said members, said mechanism being controlled by a movable member of the press during each reciprocation of the die member for withdrawing drawing compound from the reservoir and discharging the said drawing compound through said nozzle on to the metal blank while in the press preparatory to being stamped in the said press.
2. In combination with a press for stamping a sheet metal blank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, one of said members being adapted to receive a sheet metal blank before the blank is stamped on said press, a reservoir for drawing compound, a cylinder having inlet and outlet ports, a; conduit connecting the inlet port with said reservoir, a discharge nozzle mounted on the other of said members and connected to the outlet port of said cylinder through which the drawing compound is discharged on to the metal sheet in the press, a piston actuated by a movable member of the press during each reciprocation of the die member for drawing drawing compound into the cylinder and discharging the same through the nozzle on to the metal blank while in the press preparatory to being stamped in the said press.

In combination with a press for stamping a sheet metalblank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, a reservoir for drawing compound, a distributing manifold carried by the said die member provided with a plurality of outlets for distributing the drawing compound on to the sheet metal blank preparatory to being stamped in the said press, and means actuated by the up stroke of the die member for withdrawing drawing compound from the reservoir and actuated in the down stroke of the die member to discharge the said drawing compound through the manifold on to the metal blank.

In combination with a press for stamping a sheet metal blank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, a, reservoir for drawing compound, a cylinder carried by the stationary part of the press having intake and outlet ports, a conduit connecting the inlet port with the reservoir, a distitlbutitcg manifold having a plnrality of outlets mounted on the die member, a, conduit connecting the distributing manifold with the outlet port of the cylinder, 9, piston within the said cylinder connected to the die member whereby on the up stroke of the die member drawing compound is drawn from the reservoir into the cylinder and on the down stroke of the die member drawing compound is discharged from the cylinder through the manifold on to the blank preparatory to being stamped.
5. In combination with a press including a stationary member and a reciprocating die member for stamping sheet metal blanks, one of said members being adapted to receive a sheet metal blank before the blank is stamped on said press, a nozzle mounted on the other member adapted to be directed at the surface of the blank preparatory to being stamped in the press, a reservoir of lubricating compound, a conduit for conducting the drawing compound from the reservoir to the nozzle, and pump means controlled by the press for withdrawing the drawing compound from the reservoir and ejecting the same through the nozzle on to the sheet metal blank whereby upon each reciprocation of the die member a shot of drawing compound is ejected from the nozzle on to the blank preparatory to being stamped,

In combination with a, press for stamping a sheet metal blank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, one of said members being adapted to receive a sheet metal blank before the blank is stamped on said press, a reservoir for drawing compound, a cylinder having inlet and outlet ports, a conduit connecting the inlet port with said reservoir, a check valve for said conduit permitting the drawing compound to flow from the reservoir into the cylinder and preventing the drawing compound from flowing from the cylinder back into the reservoir, a discharge nozzle mounted on the other member and connected to the outlet port of said cylinder through which the drawing compound is discharged on to the metal sheet, a piston actuated by a movable member 01 the press during each reciprocation of the die member for drawing drawing compound into the cylinder and discharging the same in a predetermined metered amount through the nozzle on to the metal blank preparatory to being stamped in the said Dress.
7. In combination with a press for stamping a sheet metal blank comprising stationary and movable members including a reciprocating die member, a reservoir for drawing compound, a
" cylinder having inlet and outlet ports, a conduit connecting the inlet port with said reservoir, a discharge nozzle supported by said reciprocating press member and connected to the outlet port of said cylinder through which the drawing compound is discharged on to the metal sheet, a piston actuated by a movable member of the press with a stroke of uniform length, said piston during each reciprocation of the die member drawing drawing compound into the cylinder and discharging the same in a predetermined metered amount through the nozzle on to the metal blank preparatory to being stamped in the metal press.
