SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,268, dated July 20, 1880.

Application filed May 19, 1880.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, EMIL GRAH, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in \vhicl1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved sign. Fig.2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through line a: w of Fig. 2.

Myinvention relates to changeable or refiecting signs, intended to catch the eye and attract attention; and it consists in stenciling the letters, figures, or designs upon a suitable plate or sheet having a dark-colored surface, and suspending behind this a plate or sheet having a brilliant surface, said brilliant sheet to be constantly vibrated by a clock-work mechanism placed behind the sign, out ofsight, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.

In the. drawings, A represents a frame, into which is lixed a dark-colored sheet or plate, B, having the letters, figures, or designs cut in stencil. I secure it into the frame by passing it through slots a at top and bottom, as shown in the drawings. Behind this stenciled sign I suspend, by means of coiled springs a a, a pasteboard or other suitable sheet or plate, 0, with a stud or knob, 0, upon its back, near the bottom, which plate 0 has a brilliant-colored surface. This brilliant surface is particularly attractive if made rough or irregular, as shown in Fig. 3, and silvered or gilded.

On the back of the frame, within a boxing, is a clock-work mechanism, D, the pallet (Z of (No model.)

which, acted on by the ratchet-wheel cl, imparts its motion to a rod, 6, east integral with it, 5 and made telescopic or adjustable in length that is, made in sections, the end of one section sliding into a barrel, 6, on the end of the other section, and there fastened by an ordinary set-screw passing through the barreland having an eye upon its free end, which passes over stud or knob c, on the back of the brilliant plateO. Thus it is evident that if the clock-work be set in motion the pallet (I will Vibrate the connecting-rod c, and this in turn 5 5' the brilliant, plate 0.

By changing the length of the adjustable or telescopic rod 6 different kinds of vibrations may be imparted to the brilliant plate 0.

These brilliant plates maybe of any fancy 6o attractive color, and a number of them may be kept on hand, and one color may be substituted for another by way of variety.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The stenciled plate or sheet B and the slotted frame A, for holding it in position. in combination with the brilliant or glistening rough-surfaced plate or sheet 0, swung or hung on spiral springs behind said stenciled plate, and the clock-work mechanism for vibrating it, substantially as described.

2. In a sign, the combination, with the brilliant swlnging or vibrating plate or sheet O and clock-work mechanism and pallet, of the adjustable or telescopic connecting-rod c, by the change in length of which the movements of vibrating sheet or plate may be qnickened or shortened or lengthened and retarded, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
