Description

H. E. BRIGGS.
T ether. No. 230,229. Patented July 20,1880.
WITNESSES INVBNTOR: #6 /Jl/70l/L MV BY ATTORNEYS.
NPEI'ERS, FHQTO-UTHOGHAPHElh-WASMIMGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
TETHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed May To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN E. BRIGGS, of I Centre Star, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Tether, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device by which stock may be tethered I and have free movement for grazing without i becoming entangled in the rope. J
The invention consists in coinbininga looped rod with a standard and pivot, as hereinafter I described.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the device, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
In the drawings, A represents the post or standard, set perpendicularly in the ground and having a cylindrical axial mortise or socket, a, formed in its upper end, in which socket is set the u tiright pivot B, whose shoulder 11 l is of the same diameter as the post A, and rests on the top thereof, and in the upper and forked end of the said pivot B the lever O is horizontally pivoted on the pivot c, the short arm of said lever being heavierthan thelonger arm, so that the said long arm is elevated at an angle of forty-five degrees, or thereabout.
A looped rod, D, has its legs secured to the sides of the post A, and I its loop (I, lying 011 Patent No. 230,229, dated July 20, 1880. 18,1880. (No model.)
the face of the shoulder b of the pivot B, holds the said pivot B down, so that it cannot he accidentally displaced.
. E is the rope, having one end secured to the end of the long arm of the lever (J, by which the animal is attached to the device. I
The long arm of the lever 0 holds the rope E above the tethered animal, so that it may graze anywhere within the limit of the rope without danger of becoming entangled in it. This tether is portable, being easily moved by one man, and can be readily changed from one place to another, so that every portion of the grounds can be utilized for grazing.
In simplicity, durability, convenience, and cheapness this tether has the advantage over all others with which am acquainted.
I do not confine myself to the precise de- 'tails herein given in the construction of this device, for changes in the construction may be made without departing from my invention.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the tether-standard A and pivot. B, of the looped rod D, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby said pivot isheld in place, as set forth.
HERMAN EVELYNN BRIGGS.
