UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FERDINANI) VON LEICHT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MEANS OF PROPELLlNG Sl-llPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,160, dated' July 20, 1880. Y" Application filed May 6,1880. (No model.)
iron, the length and width of which are niade to conform to the width and length of the paddle-box, and admit of clcsing the doors.
rIhe operating-pistons B B are connected, two in number, at each end of the blades, near 5o the upper and lower corners \hereof,by means of wristpin joints C C. The pistons pass through stuffing-boxes in the plate of the boxes and the sides of the ship, and are connected at their inner ends to the piston-rods of the 55 engines of the ship, bv which action is given to the blades, causing them to work alternately backward and forward, following` each other in succession, so that while one ent of the blades are retained in a given position against Cio the sides of the paddle-boxes their opposite ends move in a contrary direction across the tube, forcing out or expelling the water with great velocity from one end o the tube or the other, and thereby motion is imparted to the 65 vessel.
The blades or paddles may be set iu a horizontal, vertical, or inclined position, and the piston ot' the blades made to conform to the construction ot the ship or vessel, and be em- 7 ployed with or without the paddle-boxes, the link-connections of the ends of the pistons with the ends of the blades being such as to admit of the free movement at the end of the stroke, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim, and desire to secure by Letters -Patent, is-
The rectangular paddle-box A, provided with doors B B and man-hole b, in combination with the blade D and Vpistons B B', all constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purposes specified. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Batt To all whom it may concern:
Be itlinown that l, FERDINAND VON LEICHT,
u of San Francisco, in the county of San Frani'- cisco and State of California have invented a i 5 new and useful Means of Iropelhng Ships, ot'
which the following` is a specification. My invention consists of a rectangular box l or paddle-house attached to each side ot' the ship below the water-line thereof, in which is Io placed a ilat blade or paddle worked by horizontal transverse pistons connected to each end of the paddles in an alternate reciprocal manner by direct connections with the engines. The ends ot' the pistons are connected tothe i i 5 paddles by wrist-pin joints, so that each end of the paddle or bladeis worked backward and Y forward in an alternate manner and independi ent of the opposite end, which forces or draws -I the water against. thc sides ofthe ship or pad- 2o dle-boxes, and thus the shipis propelled, all o a pear.
Iteferrin g to the accompanying drawings, 25 Figure 1 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view.
rIlhe rectancular boxes or tubes A, I construct of iron, securely attached to the sides of the ship below the water-line. 'I hey are pro- 30 vided with water-tight doorsB B, which, when open, set in a ledge made in the extended porl tion ot' the iron frame of which the boxes are composed. Each ot' these doors is providek with a curved arm, ct, which extends inwardly, 3 5 passino' through stuffing-boxes, and when the i doors are wide open and set close within the beino to close the tubes or boxes and make l 4 no them water tight, in case of disarrangeinent o the blades, when the wateris drawn out through 1 an inside man-hole, b, into the hold of the vesf Y sel or conducted away by means of a hose,
- 1 pi e, or other conductor. y
` 45 The blades D, I construct of flat plates of day of April, 1880.
FERDINAND lvor IiiiiciiT. [t s.) W'itnesses: A
