Wl LAUHOFF. 2 sheets-sheen.
'Apparatus for Trimming .vor Smutting Wheat, :850. No. 230,138. Patented July 20A, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFrIcE.
WILLIAM LAUHOFF, oF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.v
APPARATUS FOR TRIMMlNc dR sMuTTlNG WHEAT, sac.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,138, dated ll'uly 20, 1880.
Application led January 28, 1880.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LAUHOFF, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming and Smutting Wheat or Rye; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of theinvention, such as will` in different views, the detail parts of the lowerE Fig. 3 repre# sents, respectively in plan and reverseplanv views, the upper orrevolving stone. -Fig. 4.' is a rear-end view of the machine, showing bearing of the vertical spindle.
the polishing-cylinder in longitudinal vertical section. the lower or stationary stone.
The case L, which incloses the upper and lower stones, K and O, has its inner vertical side formed as a gratin g-surface, the same being made bypuncturing holes'inthe metallic side of the case.
The upper or revolving stone, K, `has its periphery provided with one or more radial j y slots, in which iit slides 5, the latter being4 adapted to be maintained in adjusted position by set-screws which have end bearing againstf the upper edge thereof.
A driver, T, having triangular arms, is located vin the central opening ofthe stone, and. v
' jmachine by hopper I, and it is acted upon by a thetwo horizontal stones, the latter being relatively adjusted to cause the grain to travel its arms t in suitable recesses formed inthe under side of the stone.
An outer s'et of vertically-adjusting screws,
H, pass through the stone, and 'have screwthread engagement with the driver-arms. An. inner set of vertically-adjusting screws, Gr,v
Fig. 5 represents, in differentviews,
If one side of the stone is too high, the outer adj Listing-screw near that portion ot' the stone is turned down, so as to level the stone. The corresponding inner adjusting-screw is then run down, so as to hear strongly against the driver-arm, and thereby maintain the stone lrmly in position.
If one side of the stone is too low, the inner adjusting-screw at that portion of the stone -is run up, and then the outer adjusting-screw is turned up so as to raise the stone the desired distance. The inner adjusting-screw is then rundown, so as to bear strongly against its driver-arm.v
The driver is irmly tted on the upper extremity ofthe vertical spindle S by a conical bearing, so as to prevent all accidental displacement.
Th'e lower or stationary stone is provided with a` central opening, through which the spindle passes.
The bush-blocks are adjusted against the 'spindle by wedges interposed between the bushing and the side of the opening. A metallic plate, W, is secured to the under side of the stone and maintains the bushing in position.
The'lower end of the spindle is stepped in a bridge-pot, P, having lateral arms, which engage with lever P', as the latter is vertitieally' adjusted by rod C and nut D. This vleverisprovided with a slot which tits over `thev sockety a of arch R, said socket having the 'bridge-pot fitted therein.
The opposing surfaces of the sides and ends of horizontal rotary cylinder E and inclosingoase A are formed as grating-surfaces, the'l graters.
The wheat or rye is Iirst delivered to the upright between said stones. The ends ot' the grain are thereby trimmed, and when properly trimmed and smutted it is discharged through spout 3 into the cylindrical case A. After the grain is finally polished by the action of the grating-surfaces of said oase and longitudinal walls, of aJ slide which ts in the its cylindeigitis discharged from the machine slot and :t set-screw which engages With the 1o upper edge of the slide, substantially as set by spout 9.
Having fully described my in Vention7 what I forth. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters VILLIAM LAUHOFF.
Patent, s- NVitnesses:
The Combination, with an upper horizontal JOSEPH LAUHOFF,
stone provided with a radial slot having closed FRANK LAUHOFF.
