J. W. OBR YAN. Process of Coating and Finishing Walls;
No. 230,043. Patented July 13, 1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. OBRYAN, OF PETERSBUBG, ILLINOIS.
PROCESS OF COATING AND FINISHING WALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,043, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed April 1, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. OBRYAN, of Petersburg, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes for Goatin g and Finishing Walls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a method and means for ornamenting outside.
walls of dwelling-houses and other buildings and rendering the same impervious to dampness, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings,to which reference is made, and which fully illustrate my inven- .tion, Figure l is a perspective view of a part of a house-wall embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool by which the joints are made.
A represents part of a wall for a dwellinghouse or other building. The outside of this wall is provided with a coating of acompound consisting of equal parts of cement and sand. The wall is then colored with Venetian red mixed with best oil, to represent red brick, and with ocher and white lead, to represent light brick.
When the wall is dry it is lined with a chalkline the required distances apart, and the joints put on along these lines.
The joints are made of putty, white lead,
(No model.)
and Japan varnish, and colored to suit the parties interested.
The joints are put on by means of a tool shown in Fig. 3. This tool consists of a flat piece of steel, 0, having in one edge a haltround groove, to. and the tool is provided with a suitable handle, B.
It will readily be seen that by the use of this tool the joints will be made to project beyond the surface of the wall perfectly uniform, and the wall will present a handsome and neat appearance.
The wall may be made to represent stone by changing the coloring, and then the joints will of course be farther apart.
The coating of the wall renders the wall impervious to air or dampness.
The method of marking and aligning the outer walls of buildings is well known, and such method is not sought to be covered by this application.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is x The method of ornamenting the outer surfaces of buildings by first aligning and then applying a compoundof putty, whitelead, and J apan varnish to form raised joints projecting from the plane of the surface, as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February, 1880.
JOHN W. OBRYAN.
