f rearms; 01.171 37) 1 This application relates-to drilling machines of the type used in drilling mains containing pressure fluid. This" type of machine includes a barrel adapted to be secured at one end against the main and having at its other end a cap adapted to be threaded on and oii in carrying out the various operations, this cap having an ex ternally threaded neck provided with a bore in which is rotatable and reciprocable the boring bar which carries the bit. A feed nut, provided with handles, is threaded on the neck and a disengageable thrust connection is provided between the nut and the bar. Ordinarily the cap is provided with handles which may be grasped to turn it. The object of the present invention is to eliminate the necessity for the cap handles by providing means operable to lock the feed nut and cap together so that the latter can be made to follow the rotation of the former. In this manner the cap becomes a less expensive and lighter part and the machine more convenient in use since the feed nut handles are more readily accessible for manipulation than the handles previously provided on the cap.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing with reference to which the description will proceed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an axial section of a machine in accordance with the invention, showing also a main in partial transverse section.
Figure 2 is a section substantially on line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a section of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, reference numeral l designates generally a barrel or housing in substantially radial operative disposition relative to a main H, the housing being secured in position on the main in the manner well known in the art. At its upper end the barrel is provided with external threads which are engageable by the internal threads of the base portion of a cap I2. The cap has an externally threaded neck l3 provided with-an axial bore in which isrotatable and reciprocable a boring bar M. A feed nut I5, having handles I6, is threaded on neck [3 and a yoke l1 pivoted on the nut is'engageable over a thrust collar I8 fixed on the boring bar so that when the nut is threaded downwardly the boring bar will be advanced. As here shown, the tool I9 is a combined drill and tap and the advance of the boring bar during tapping is regulated by interengaging threads on the collar l8 and 2| substantially on line 3-3 in the neck bore, the feed nut being idle at this the present-invention and is unnecessary in lthe practicethereof. H
Neck I3 is provided with a longitudinal groove 22 interrupting its external threads, the groove having side walls parallel to a radial plane bisecting the groove. Nut [5 is provided with a radial bore 23in which is mounted a detent in the form of a plunger 24 having a reduced rib-like inner extremity 25 engageable in groove 22 andcooperable with the abutments constituted by the side walls of the latter. The plunger 24 is urged inwardly by a compression spring 26 whose inner end bears against a ring 21 fixed to the inner end of the plunger and whose outer end bears against a ring 28 which is secured to the nut by screws 29 and 30. The plunger has a head 3| provided with bores adapted to receive the heads of screws 29 and 30 as shown in Figures 2 and 3 and in this relation of parts portion 25 of the plunger is engageable in the groove 22 and nut I5 is consequently forced to follow the rotation of the nut in either direction. The provision of the elongated groove makes it possible to lock the nut and cap together in any positionof the nut longitudinally of the neck. By retracting the plunger and turning it so as to bring the head bores out of register with screws 29 and 30, upon release of the plunger,
uninterrupted portions of theundersurface of the head will be borne against the outer ends of the screw heads and the plunger will be maintained in a position wherein its portion 25 is out of the range of groove 22. In this relation of parts the cap 12 is independent of the rotation of the nut so that the lattermay be used for advancing the boring bar.
While we have disclosed herein the present preferred form of the invention, it will be understood that variations may be made without departure from the invention as defined in the claims. j
This application is a division of our application Serial No. 346,052,1iled July 17, 1940.
We claim:
1. Drilling apparatus comprising a cap includ-,
engageable means for locking said member and neck together.
2. Drilling apparatus comprising a cap including a base having means for engaging the barrel of a drilling machine upon turning of the base relative to the barrel, said means disengaging the barrel upon reverse turning of the base, a threaded neck on said cap, a boring bar rotatable and reciprocable in a bore in said neck, a threaded member engaging the threads of said neck, a handle on said member, thrust means between said member and bar, a controllable detent on said member, and abutments on said neck engageable by said detent whereby the cap may be caused to follow the rotation of said member in either direction.
3. Drilling apparatus comprising a cap including a base having means for engaging the barrel of a drilling machine upon turning of the base relative to the barrel, said means disengaging the barrel upon reverse turning of the base, an externally threaded neck on said cap, a boring bar rotatable and reciprocable in a bore, in said neck,
a threaded feed member engaging the threads of said neck, a handle on said member, thrust means between said member and bar, said neck having a longitudinal groove interrupting its threads, and a controllable detent on said member engageable in said groove so that the cap may be caused to follow the rotation of said member in either direction.
4. Drilling apparatus comprising a cap including a base having means for engaging the barrel of a drilling machine upon turning of the base relative to the barrel, said means disengaging the barrel upon reverse turning of the base, said cap also including a threaded neck, a, boring bar rotatable and reciprocable in a bore in said neck, a threaded feed member engaging the threads of said neck, a handle on said member, thrust means between said member and bar, and disengageable means for locking said member and cap together so that rotation of the former in either direction is transmitted to the latter.
